Who is Everton starlet Reece Welch?

Everton manager Frank Lampard must cash in on Michael Keane according to former player Kevin Campbell. Speaking to Goodison News he said that the defender has had a “horrendous” season with Everton, but that he could be useful to another team as a squad player.

It was reported in The Daily Star recently that West Ham United would be willing to pay £20m for the defender, and we think that the Toffees should cash in on him and give one of their young prospects a chance.

The club could cut their losses over Keane, who signed from Burnley as part of a spending spree in 2017 and give 18-year old academy player Reece Welch a chance with the first team.

Initially, he may not be used as a direct replacement due to a lack of experience, but he could develop well if involved, and become a key player over a number of years.

With the end of the season fast approaching Everton are fighting to retain their Premier League status and Keane has been at the centre of that misery. The club are sixth on the list when it comes to most goals conceded this season in the Premier League, with the 29-year-old appearing in 28 of the 33 games played.

If they were able to secure a significant fee for him then it’s a no brainer surely. Former manager at Goodison Park, Sam Allardyce, recently told talkSPORT that Everton “could crack under pressure”, and with some of their performances so far this season ‘lacking fight’, why would you want those players around the dressing room.

One of the advantages with giving younger players a chance is that they are often fearless as they have a point to prove, wanting to show everyone they are good enough to play at the top level. Welch has also risen through the ranks at Finch Farm so would know what an honour it is to wear an Everton shirt.

The England U20 international made his debut for the first team in March, coming on as a substitute in their FA Cup victory over Borehamwood.

He has also appeared 22 times in Premier League 2 this season showing consistency having been promoted from the U18s last summer. The Guardian ranked him in their next-generation list in 2020 where they looked at the 20 best talents at Premier League clubs.

In the process, journalist Andy Hunter described him as “skilful” and “composed” in the backline.

Having trust in youth has worked for the Toffees in the past and we think it can work again now, and could benefit them in the long run as well.

The prodigious talent of Bayern Munich is excited for the upcoming European Championship as he will carry the No.10 on his back. The national team promotion marks the culmination of a childhood dream, influenced by legendary players like Lionel Messi, Ronaldinho, and Neymar, all of whom have donned the prestigious number for their respective nations.

Musiala's first appearance in Germany's No. 10 shirt came during a friendly match against France in March. The 21-year-old midfielder was bestowed this honour amid a stellar season with Bayern, which he ended with 12 goals and eight assists across 38 games in all competitions, despite the team ending up trophyless.

He played just nine minutes at the last European Championship, but made a significant impact during the 2022 World Cup. Although Germany's campaign ended in a disappointing group stage exit, Musiala’s performances were a bright spot, showcasing his potential as a future star for Die Mannschaft.

WHAT MUSIALA SAID

In an interview with , Musiala opened up about the significance of wearing the No. 10 jersey for Germany. "The No. 10 is a great honor," Musiala said. "It has been a dream since I was a little kid. Whenever I saw Messi, Ronaldinho, or Neymar playing football with the No. 10 as a child, it was my wish to be able to wear that number one day.

"So I am very proud that I can play for Germany with the No. 10, but I won’t let it go to my head. I will continue to play just as I did before with the No. 14 in the national team, or with the No. 42 at Bayern. It actually motivates me even more.”

The No. 10 jersey is more than just a number in football – historically worn by some of the greatest footballers, including Pele and Diego Maradona. It is often associated with a team's most skilled and influential player. Musiala’s acquisition of this number reflects the German national team's faith in his abilities and potential, which he will hope to unlock when they open their Euro 2024 campaign against Scotland on June 14.

The triumphs and travails of Moeen Ali's Test career

As he announces his retirement from Test cricket, we chart Moeen’s many ups and downs over the past four years

Matt Roller09-Aug-2019 • Updated on 26-Sep-2021Ashes 2017-18Moeen went into the 2017-18 Ashes on the back of a brilliant 2017 home summer, which included a haul of 10 for 112 at Lord’s and a hat-trick at The Oval in the South Africa series, and a swashbuckling hundred against the West Indies in Bristol. But after spending weeks in the nets and with Mark Ramprakash preparing for a barrage of bumpers from Australia’s quicks, he endured an awful run against Nathan Lyon: he was dismissed seven times in nine innings by him, and his struggles spilled over into his bowling, as he returned five wickets at 115.New Zealand 2017-18Moeen Ali is cleaned up•Getty ImagesWith Jack Leach in the squad as a possible replacement, Moeen needed to prove he was England’s best spinner, and that he could contribute with the bat, in the pink-ball Test at Auckland.Instead, he made 0 and 28, and took 0 for 59 in 17 overs, as England slumped to an innings defeat. By the time the Christchurch Test had come around, Leach was in for his debut.Pakistan 2018While England stumbled at Lord’s and then bounced back emphatically at Headingley, Moeen was playing for Worcestershire in the One-Day Cup, his Test career at a crossroads. With Leach injured, England plumped for Dom Bess as their first-choice spinner, who made one half-century and a 49, as well as taking three wickets in Leeds. The path back to the Test side for Moeen was far from clear.India 2018After controversially selecting Adil Rashid, who hadn’t played a first-class game in 11 months, England raced into a 2-0 lead before capitulating at Trent Bridge, and then found themselves facing a turning pitch at the Ageas Bowl.Step forward Moeen, to come into the side alongside Rashid, and take nine wickets at Southampton to propel England to victory. He was even promoted to No. 3 to allow Joe Root to return to his favoured number four, digging in for a 170-ball 50 at The Oval. Following six months in the wilderness, all seemed well with the world.Sri Lanka 2018-19Jack Leach, Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid shared 19 of Sri Lanka’s 20 wickets•Getty ImagesPushed back down the order after two failures in the first Test, Moeen didn’t allow his loss of form with the bat to affect his bowling, as his 18 wickets at 24.50 underpinned England’s stellar efforts with the ball. With Leach (18 wickets) and Rashid (12) to keep him company, he formed part of a spin triumvirate that led England to an improbable 3-0 whitewash.West Indies 2018-19Despite 14 wickets in the series, including seven in the win in St Lucia, Moeen was outbowled by West Indies’ allrounder Roston Chase, and managed only 77 runs in his five innings.Following two brilliant series, this was a note of warning, and after an underwhelming World Cup and no red-ball cricket before the Ireland Test, Moeen was under pressure.Ireland and Ashes 2019Moeen Ali lost his off stump not playing a shot•Getty ImagesScores of 0 and 9 at Lord’s against Ireland, including a particularly soft dismissal to Boyd Rankin’s predictable short stuff, and only 4.2 overs in the match meant Moeen went into the Edgbaston Test sweating. And after an embarrassing duck in the first innings – bowled by, you guessed it, Lyon again, without playing a shot – Moeen found himself on a spinning pitch in Australia’s second innings, and needing to make a match-turning contribution.Instead, he returned 2 for 130 in his 29 overs, figures that were shown up horribly by Lyon’s 6 for 49, and not those of a man who leads the world for Test wickets since the beginning of August 2018. To make matters worse, he made only 4 when trying to save the game, prodding his opposite number to David Warner in the gully.By the time Lord’s rolled around, the selectors decided it was time up.Post-Ashes 2019Moeen declared he would take a break from Test cricket, citing a desire to “refresh my batteries” on the day it was announced he had been omitted from England’s list of centrally contracted Test players. It means missing England’s two Tests in New Zealand in November, and possibly the red-ball leg of the South Africa tour in December and January. While he retained his white-ball contract, and will be a central part of England’s plans for the World T20 in Australia next year, this was the first time since 2014-15, the year of his England debut, that Moeen had been overlooked for the top tier of ECB contracts.England’s director of cricket, Ashley Giles stressed that Moeen’s decision did not spell the end of his 60-Test career and revealed he had “encouraged him to leave that option open to come back” to the longer format in the future.Moeen Ali celebrates one of his four second-innings strikes•BCCIIndia 2020-21Moeen’s recall, for what would prove to be his final tour as an England Test cricketer, was doomed from the outset. He was diagnosed with Covid-19 on arrival in Sri Lanka in January, and so spent ten days in quarantine, wrecking any chance of playing in either Test at Galle, or the opening match of the subsequent India series – a famous England win, as it turned out.His comeback for the second Test was a success in isolation. Moeen claimed eight wickets for the match, four in either innings, although his economy-rate, pushing four an over, was too leaky to compete with the parsimony of his India rivals, Axar Patel and R Ashwin. His most arresting moment came with the bat, as he slammed 43 from 18 balls from No.9 in the dying moments of the match – a volley of strokeplay that may well have played a part in his subsequent £700,000 pay-day at the IPL auction.By that stage, however, Moeen had already departed from England’s Test tour, his pre-arranged downtime, as part of the ECB’s rest-and-rotation policy, courting controversy when Joe Root erroneously claimed he had “chosen” to fly home from the tour. Though he returned in the summer for three final Tests, the writing for his Test career was already on the wall.

'The lateral movement is big' – Ajinkya Rahane's pink-ball experience

Some of India’s Test regulars trained with the SG pink balls at NCA in preparation for the Kolkata Test

Rahane on first tryst with pink ball and sessions under Dravid

Playing late, and close to the body, is the key to counter the pink ball – that’s the early learning India’s Test vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane is taking back with him after training against the pink ball for the first time over the past few days.Rahane was part of a small bunch of players from the Indian Test squad, who practised with the pink ball at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru in the lead up to the Bangladesh Test series, which includes a day-night Test, the first for either team, in Kolkata from November 22.Not many top-drawer Indian players have actually played competitive cricket with the pink ball, which Rahane said was a “different ball game” from the red ball. “We had two good practice sessions, actually three or four but two in pink ball, one during the day and one under lights,” Rahane said at a press conference in the lead up to the first Test in Indore. “It was actually exciting. It was the first time I played with pink ball, and definitely it’s a different ball game as compared to red ball.”ALSO READ: SG pink ball to be used for maiden day-night Test in IndiaAlong with Rahane, the others who were present at NCA were Mayank Agarwal and Cheteshwar Pujara among the batsmen, and Mohammed Shami and Ravindra Jadeja. The training sessions took place under the stewardship of NCA director of cricket, Rahul Dravid.”Our focus during the practice session was to look into the swing and seam, and also play close to our body,” Rahane said. “What we found out after the practice session that the pink ball does a lot (more) than the red ball. We have to play slightly late and close to your body. We had word with Rahul also as he was there. We had a very good practice session. Right now the focus is on the first Test match, the red SG ball.”The Kolkata Test will also be the first time SG pink balls will be used at the highest level, making it a trial for the balls as well. Incidentally, the BCCI had preferred the Kookaburra in the Duleep Trophy, which has been played under lights in the last three seasons. Irrespective of the make, it will take some adjusting for the players to do, but Rahane was confident it wouldn’t be a problem.”The lateral movement is big, actually a lot than the red ball,” he said. “Adjustment-wise, I’m sure everyone will adjust very quickly. We are used to playing different formats – after T20s we play Tests. It’s just the mindset, technical skills will play a role. Mentally if you can adjust to the pink ball, then it’ll be good.”Speaking to ESPNcricinfo in September, more than one prominent Indian domestic player had given the thumbs-down to the pink ball, with Faiz Fazal saying, “There was nothing for bowlers (with the pink ball).”Suresh Raina tosses the pink ball to Ashok Dinda during the 2016-17 Duleep Trophy•AFPWith barely any experience of playing with the pink ball, Rahane did not want to get drawn into comparing the SG and the Kookaburra. But he said the SG pink helped the spinners get more revolutions on the ball. “We played against spinners in Bangalore, and they were getting good revs on the ball. Yes, the shine is completely different to the red ball, but it’s very hard to compare with SG ball and the Kookaburra ball.”I’ve never played with the pink ball. And what I’ve heard from other people is that the Kookaburra ball is actually really easy for the batsmen. But what we saw in Bangalore and played in Bangalore is that the SG ball was doing a bit for the fast bowlers. For spinners, it is difficult but it is very hard for me to say right now about Kookaburra and SG ball.”Unlike Rahane, Pujara has encountered the pink ball in the past, at the 2016 Duleep Trophy, when he topped the scorers’ chart with 453 runs from three innings, hitting two centuries including an unbeaten 256 not out.”I have played with the pink ball, in the Duleep Trophy, and the experience was a good one. The day-night Test will be a five-day game, those were four-day games, this will be a Test-match scenario, so it will be exciting,” he told bcci.tv.He did, however, concede that some of the other batsmen did have problems picking the ball, especially in the latter stages of the days and when facing wristspinners.”During the day, there will be no visibility issues with the pink ball. In my experience, the twilight period and the period under lights are more difficult. Those sessions will be crucial,” he said. “My experience as a batsman was a good one. Even as a team we did well. But some of the other players I had spoken to said that especially when facing a wristspinner, their wrong’uns were difficult to pick. When Kuldeep (Yadav) was bowling, it was difficult to pick his wrong’un.”India and Bangladesh, as well as Afghanistan and Ireland, are the only teams to not have played a pink-ball Test yet, and their maiden foray in the new direction came about when Sourav Ganguly, soon after taking charge as the BCCI president, proposed the plan calling it a “huge step forward”, and the BCB, after discussing the matter with the players, gave it the go-ahead.

UP in knockouts with Bhuvneshwar's hat-trick, Shami continues to prove fitness

Bengal, Chandigarh, Andhra, UP, Baroda, Delhi, MP, Saurashtra, Mumbai and Vidarbha made it to the knockouts

At the end of an engaging day’s play, this much was certain: Punjab won’t be defending their title this season despite Abhishek Sharma’s heroics, Mohammed Shami will have an opportunity to garner more match time with Bengal and Ajinkya Rahane’s scintillating form for Mumbai may yet keep him in conversations around captaincy at Kolkata Knight Riders. Here are the highlights from Thursday:Bhuvneshwar the hat-trick hero as UP enter knockoutsSigned for INR 10.75 crore by Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Bhuvneshwar Kumar proved he is not a spent force just yet. Bhuvneshwar, captaining UP, recorded figures of 4-1-6-3 – all his wickets coming in his final over – as Jharkhand fell short by 10 runs chasing 161. Among the wickets for Bhuvneshwar was the big-hitting Robin Minz. That Jharkhand got that close was because of allrounder Anukul Roy, who smashed a 44-ball 91 at No. 5.Earlier in the tournament, Bhuvneshwar upstaged Jasprit Bumrah to become the first Indian seamer to get 300 T20 wickets. Among Indians, only Yuzvendra Chahal (364), Piyush Chawla (319) and R Ashwin (310) have more T20 wickets than Bhuvneshwar (308).Shami continues pain-free returnShami picked up three wickets in another sure shot sign of him slowly returning to full match fitness, as Bengal stormed into the pre-quarterfinals where they will take on Chandigarh.Playing his seventh straight game of the competition, Shami picked up 3 for 26 as Bengal restricted Rajasthan to153 for 9, before half-centuries from Abishek Porel and Sudip Gharami helped seal a seven-wicket win.Related

Then they hit choppy waters with Shreyas Iyer (25) and Suryakumar Yadav (4) falling in quick succession.Rahane then found support from Shivam Dube, with whom he put on 54 in just 31 balls; Dube’s contribution to the partnership an 18-ball 34. They managed to restrict Karnataka to 203, with Axar picking 2 for 22 off four overs in their 48-run win. However, Saurashtra managed to edge out Gujarat by chasing down their 137 target against Tripura in just 13.3 overs. In the end, Baroda, Saurashtra and Gujarat all finished on 24 points and Gujarat lost out on a knockout berth because their NRR was lower than Saurashtra’s by 0.335.

Harry Kane chases down ridiculous Cristiano Ronaldo & Erling Haaland record as Bayern Munich striker makes more Bundesliga history

Harry Kane is chasing down a goal-scoring record set by Cristiano Ronaldo and Erling Haaland as he continues to make more history with Bayern Munich. The England captain was in fine form on Saturday as he scored a hat-trick in the Bavarian side's 4-1 win over Hoffenheim. This was Kane's ninth hat-trick since moving to Germany in 2023.

Kane rewrites Bundesliga history with latest goals

With a hat-trick against Hoffenheim on Saturday, Kane reached 70 goals in the Bundesliga for Bayern Munich in just 67 appearances, which is the quickest any footballer has reached the 70-goal mark in the league's history.

AdvertisementGettyKane aiming to break Ronaldo & Haaland's record

Kane has now scored 98 goals for Bayern in 103 appearances across all competitions. He will be the quickest player to reach the 100-goal mark in a top-five European League if he nets a brace against Werder Bremen next Friday. Right now, that record is jointly held by Cristiano Ronaldo and Erling Haaland, who achieved the feat in 105 matches for Real Madrid and Manchester City respectively.

German media offer apology to Kane

The English forward has received an apology from a German journalist, who had questioned Bayern's decision to pay €100m to Tottenham for a striker entering his thirties. The journalist took back his words and praised Kane's strict discipline and work ethic.

AFPNeymar's Champions League record also in sight

After facing Werder Bremen on Friday, Vincent Kompany's side will travel to Cyprus for their Champions League fixture against Pafos. If he scores a brace there, Kane will overtake Neymar's Champions League goals tally of 43.

'Just relax. Calm and cool' – How Sri Lanka turned the tables on Pakistan

Chamari Athapaththu explains how her side defended 12 runs off the last two overs to make the women’s Asia Cup final

Mohammad Isam13-Oct-2022Nida Dar goes down on her haunches after getting run-out off the last ball. The Sri Lanka players are running towards each other from all directions, arms aloft, screaming loud, smiling. The big screen at the Sylhet International Stadium flashes the result. Those in the stands are open-mouthed. Some have their hands on their head. Whether it happens in front of a few hundred people, or millions, there’s something unpretentious about last-ball finishes.Particularly when the contest was so tilted against the winners even just 15 minutes previously. The first ray of hope for Sri Lanka came when Sugandika Kumari removed Bismah Maroof in the 18th over. She was in two minds and missed the ball. Bowled for 42. Inoka Ranaweera was magnificent in the 19th over, picking up another wicket. Pakistan needed nine off the last six balls. And up stepped Achini Kulasuriya, slinging yorker after yorker until she made history. After the match, Sri Lanka’s Chamari Athapaththu was beaming, with her deputy Oshadi Ranasinghe in tow, at the press conference. A little while before, Aliya Riaz had expressed just how sad it was to be in the Pakistan dressing room at that point. They were almost there, in the Women’s Asia Cup final, only to be denied off the last ball.Athapaththu said that Kulasuriya followed her directions word for word. It was all about denying the batters Riaz and Dar the room they needed to hit the ball over the 25-yard circle, which became doubly important because, at that moment, Sri Lanka were also dealing with an over-rate penalty. They could have only three fielders (one less than the usual four in women’s cricket) outside the circle in the last over.”After 14 years, we are in the final of the Asia Cup,” Athapaththu said. “So it’s really good for us as a team, as a nation. We are really excited today. And I’m very happy about my team’s performance today. All players doing really well today.”We planned a few things yesterday. We know Nida is a hard-hitter of Pakistan. Achini Kulasuriya is a really good, experienced bowler in our bowling line-up. I always trust her, and I know she can do it.”

Riaz, who was at the non-striker’s end when Pakistan needed three off the last ball, said that since it was hard to find boundaries, they might as well have tried for the two needed to take the game into the Super Over.”I and Nida talked that if the boundary did not come, we would go for two runs,” Riaz said. “Unfortunately, it didn’t happen. [Kulasuriya] bowled well, she bowled yorkers. On the last delivery, Nida tried to put it over extra cover but unfortunately, she could not connect well enough.”Sri Lanka reacted impressively to take the lifeline they had earned thanks to Maroof’s wicket and it was all down to their captain urging the players to stay relaxed.”I just told my team to stick with our plans,” Athapaththu said. “We did not want to do more things. Just relax, calm and cool, do our things. They do whatever they wanted to do, but we want to stick with our plans.”Inoka bowled really well in that [19th] over. I have two good spinners and two good senior players especially vice-captain Oshadi and Inoka. If I have to take a decision, they advise me about taking them.”All things happen from hard work. In the last year, we struggled as a men’s team, a women’s team, and a country. But now we are happy because the men’s team won the Asia Cup and we will try to do our best in the final.”Riaz said that Pakistan had a good tournament but it would have been better had they made it to the final to face India. “Of course, it’s very disappointing. Everyone is sad. Everyone is very emotional and it’s very hard for everyone.”The whole tournament was very good for us. We collapsed against Thailand but we came back strong against India. After that, we carried the momentum. But then, today… It was a very great chance for us to reach the final. All batters and bowlers are in good shape.”

He can dethrone Jackson: Chelsea pushing hard to sign £21m "monster"

Chelsea have made gains under Enzo Maresca’s management this season but plan to springboard toward loftier heights with some well-placed signings.

Chelsea managerEnzoMarescaapplauds fans after the match

Winter activity is anticipated, with Maresca keen on signing a new centre-back after fitness blows to Benoit Badiashile and Wesley Fofana, but the longer plan suggests that a new centre-forward is coveted.

Chelsea chasing talented striker

According to German outlet BILD – via Sport Witness – Chelsea are pushing hard to sign Stefanos Tzimas in the summer transfer window, with the PAOK Thessaloniki forward, who is on loan in Germany with Nurnberg, attracting interest from some high-profile suitors.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Liverpool are also believed to be in the mix, but the report states that it is Stamford Bridge which is shaping up to look a probable destination for the 19-year-old, named as the favourites and having no qualms over paying the €25m (£21m) asking price.

It’s a complicated deal: Nurnberg will look to activate their buy option for the loanee before turning an instant profit, something Chelsea are happy to oblige.

Why Chelsea want Stefanos Tzimas

Chelsea have a fantastic striker in Nicolas Jackson, who, aged 23, has notched 23 goals and nine assists across 55 Premier League appearances. He’s not perfect though, having gone five successive games without scoring.

Christopher Nkunku has endured frustration throughout his time in west London and is being courted by Bayern Munich, meaning the Blues would have room to add to their rich and abundant frontline. Tzimas might be the perfect signing, able to tussle with Jackson without rocking the boat too hard.

That’s certainly not to say that the Greek ace can’t dethrone the Senegalese forward in good time, with talent scout Jacek Kulig already hailing him as a “monster in the making.”

He’s scored eight goals across 14 appearances (ten starts) in the 2. Bundesliga this term, only missing 11 big chances and averaging 1.5 dribbles per game, bespeaking a progressiveness that will serve him well when looking to replace Jackson as Chelsea’s main number nine in the long run.

Obviously, Jackson is playing at a higher level, competing against Premier League defenders, but he is also nearly five years Tzimas’ senior and is already being outstripped across a number of key metrics.

Tzimas’ unrelenting intensity and desire to drive play forward is something that could be perfect for Chelsea. Cole Palmer’s surgical passing would prosper for sure, the Three Lions star creating 18 big chances in the Premier League this term.

Cole Palmer in action for Chelsea

Such a signing would only strengthen Chelsea’s exciting project over the coming years. He wouldn’t displace Jackson from the offing, but Tzimas has all the signs of becoming an elite striker in the coming years, and must be signed.

Additionally, reports of a disagreement with the manager during a Europa League clash against Viktoria Plzen have fueled concerns about his behaviour.

Napoli are reportedly keen on Garnacho as a potential replacement for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who is expected to depart for around £60m ($73m) to Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain. However, they are also exploring alternative options, including Borussia Dortmund’s Karim Adeyemi and Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel. Chelsea, too, have Garnacho on their shortlist of attacking targets this month, alongside Jamie Gittens of Dortmund and Tel. Dortmund’s Adeyemi has also emerged as a potential late loan option should other negotiations fail to materialise.

DID YOU KNOW?

Despite the interest, United have shown no inclination to sell Garnacho this January. The club has reiterated that they remain committed to retaining him unless a deal meets their strict valuation. Garnacho’s inclusion in United’s recent win over Southampton further underscores the club’s stance on his importance to the squad. Moreover, the Red Devils are also unwilling to entertain swap deals involving players they do not require.

As the January transfer window unfolds, Garnacho’s future remains uncertain. While Napoli and Chelsea are intrigued by his potential, concerns over his temperament and United’s steadfast approach to negotiations may complicate any deal. The Argentine forward will be in action next against Brighton on Sunday.

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder believes Coventry City boss Lampard doesn't get the credit he deserves when it comes to management. Moreover, he has commended him for finding his feet at the Sky Blues after difficult posts at Chelsea, Everton, and Derby County.

He told reporters: “I've got an enormous amount of respect for Frank Lampard, I honestly have. His playing career is there for everybody to see but I just love the fact that he loves football and it just shines through. He took a tough job at Derby and got through to a play-off final and we had a couple of great games with them in that season and he had an outstanding run at it. Tough gig at Chelsea when they didn't sign any players and he had to play a lot of young players. Tough gig at Everton. I don't think he gets the credit that he deserves, I honestly don’t. People talk about England managers and people are critical of him, I just don't get it. He can quite easily manage England. The job he's doing at Coventry, he didn't have to do it, but he wants to get his hands dirty. He loves football, he loves the changing room, he loves everything about football. So I'm a big fan.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Lampard was sacked at Chelsea in 2021, dismissed at Everton in 2023, and had an awful caretaker stint at the Blues later that year. However, he has a 56.52 per cent win record at Coventry, which outstrips his previous roles, and has turned them into a side pushing for Championship promotion in less than six months. Whether that success continues remains to be seen.

Lampard's Coventry, who sit fifth in the Championship, travel to second-placed Sheffield United on Friday night in what will be a huge test for both sides.
