Report names "frightening" Wolves striker target, bid already rejected

Gary O'Neil and Wolves will need to sign a striker this month. They've lost Fabio Silva and Sasa Kalajdzic, having allowed the duo to join Rangers and Eintracht Frankfurt respectively on loan until the end of the season.

To that end, the Midlands outfit have apparently shown interest in Getafe's Borja Mayoral, a player who's also caught the eye of Premier League rivals Crystal Palace and Wolves. 26-year-old Mayoral is the second top-scorer in La Liga this season with 12 goals, but Wolves are also looking at another striker who's at a much earlier stage in his development.

Kilicsoy bid rejected

According to Turkish outlet Haber Turk, Wolves have enquired about Besiktas forward Semih Kilicsoy. The youngster has apparently been "on the radar" of sides across Europe for "a long time" now, but it's Wolves who have "knocked" on the door.

It's even claimed that they've gone as far as making a formal bid this month, one that the Super Lig outfit have rejected. It remains to be seen whether they return with an improved offer, or prioritise alternative targets.

It's worth noting that it was only on 2 January that Kilicsoy signed a new contract, running until the summer of 2028. In that sense, Wolves' interest comes at a bad time, with Besiktas holding all the cards after doing what they could to tie down their asset.

Kilicsoy can succeed where Silva failed

18-year-old Kilicsoy, a product of the Besiktas academy, put up devastating numbers for the Istanbul outfit's under-19 team, scoring 42 times in 64 matches, a strike rate of one in every 1.52 games. While there's no guarantee that output like that will translate to the senior level, Kilicsoy has handled the transition spectacularly well so far.

He made his first start of the season in a 3-1 defeat away to Alanyaspor just before Christmas, and then kept his place for the following game at Hatayspor, where he got his first-ever Super Lig goal in a 2-1 win. He followed that up with another in a 3-1 defeat to Kasimpasa, and then produced an individual masterclass as his side beat Caykur Rizespor 4-0, scoring a brace and providing an assist too. That's five direct goal involvements in his first four starts.

In a sense, Kilicsoy has benefitted from a disappointing season for the club, who find themselves 18 points off leaders Galatasaray already having only been 10 points adrift at the end of 2022/23. In the circumstances, manager Fernando Santos has decided to give youth a chance, and been rewarded.

Kilicsoy has only played 18 first-team games, 14 of them this season, but already he looks like a future international for Turkey, having netted five in six for the under-19s. No wonder football talent scout Jacek Kulig named him as part of a generation of "frightening" young forwards.

If Wolves did sign Kilicsoy, the comparisons to Fabio Silva – the 18-year-old who commanded a club-record fee in 2020 – would be inevitable. O'Neil would hope for much better results this time, having seen Silva score just five times in 72 appearances before his latest loan move.

Inter Miami manager Javier Mascherano expressed his regret over a brawl that erupted following his team's 3-0 defeat to the Seattle Sounders in the Leagues Cup final.

Following the final whistle, Inter Miami's Luis Suarez rushed to headlock the Seattle Sounders' Obed Vargas, which sparked a brawl with players and coaches from both teams. As Suarez walked away from Vargas, he got into a verbal confrontation with a Seattle staff member and spat at his face.

"None of us likes to see this kind of behavior," Mascherano said. "When there’s a reaction, it usually means there was some provocation."

The Inter Miami coach also reflected on his team's defeat, which prevented the club from lifting what would have been only the third trophy in their history.

“In matches like these, details are decisive. The first few minutes cost us the game. We tried to grow into it, but unfortunately, we conceded in the first half. In the second half, we dominated and created chances,” he said. “The 3-0 scoreline is too heavy. We took risks, and their second goal effectively ended the game.”

The Sounders' win now means they have won four U.S. Open Cups, two MLS Cups, one CONCACAF Champions Cup, one Leagues Cup and one Supporters’ Shield – compared with Inter Miami’s 2023 Leagues Cup and 2024 Supporters’ Shield. Seattle's Brian Schmetzer became the first manager to win every major North American trophy.

With the international break coming up, the Heronswill be back in action on Sept. 13 when they visit Charlotte FC.

Mayank Agarwal replaces Shikhar Dhawan in India's ODI squad

The opener has been in terrific form in both international and domestic cricket this season

Nagraj Gollapudi10-Dec-2019An in-form Mayank Agarwal has replaced the injured Shikhar Dhawan in the India squad for ODI leg of the home series against West Indies which will follow after the ongoing T20I series. It is understood that Dhawan has not yet completely recovered from the freak knee injury he suffered in November during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, which had ruled him out initially from the T20I leg of the West Indies series with Sanju Samson being named as his replacement.Agarwal is currently playing for Karnataka in the first round of Ranji Trophy against Tamil Nadu in Dindigul. He will miss at least the second round of Ranji matches starting on December 17.It will be the second time this year Agarwal has been called as a replacement to join the ODI squad. The first occurrence was during the World Cup when he replaced allrounder Vijay Shankar, who had picked a toe injury. The selectors had then explained the decision as providing top-order back-up, with Dhawan having already been ruled out and KL Rahul having suffered an injury scare.ALSO READ: When you come back and play domestic cricket in India, it challenges you – Mayank AgarwalOverall this year, in terms of numbers alone, Agarwal has been the best Indian batsman across formats across domestic and international cricket. Everton team news vs Leicester

Paddy Kenny has been left reacting to some Everton news that has now emerged on Richarlison ahead of the clash with Leicester City.

The Lowdown: Investigation

As per iNews, Richarlison is now being investigated by the police, after he threw a lit flare while celebrating his winning goal during the 1-0 win against Chelsea in the Premier League at Goodison Park last weekend.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-5/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Brazil international is also at risk of disciplinary action from the FA, although they have paused their own investigation for now.

The Latest: Kenny reacts

Speaking to Football Insider, former Leeds United and Sheffield United goalkeeper Kenny has now given his reaction to the news, claiming he will be ‘lucky’ to avoid a ban, which will be a big ‘blow’:

“He will be lucky to avoid a ban for that, you can’t do it.

“I get that emotions get high. Everton are in a real pressure situation and everyone is stressed.

“There are processes in place for this. You leave the flare and a steward will come on and deal with it.

“I don’t know where Richarlison was trying to throw it. I’m sure he wasn’t trying to hit a fan.

“But he could have really hurt someone. Even after carrying it around, I’m not sure why he threw it into where people were sitting.

“He will be fined, there is no doubt about that. I think the FA would be well within their rights to ban him which would be a blow to Everton.

“He is the guy to score the goals to get them out of this so if he gets banned he will look very silly.”

The Verdict: Worrying

It certainly is worrying that Richarlison could now receive a ban for his actions, given that there are only a few games left of the season to go.

It is not clear how many matches he would be banned for, but starting with a trip to Leicester City on Sunday afternoon, the Toffees have some winnable fixtures coming up that will be crucial in getting them out of the relegation zone.

With four goals and one assist in his last six appearances in the top flight, including the winner against Chelsea last time out (Transfermarkt), Richarlison is a player on form, and so losing him will certainly hinder their chances of winning some of those remaining games.

'The lateral movement is big' – Ajinkya Rahane's pink-ball experience

Some of India’s Test regulars trained with the SG pink balls at NCA in preparation for the Kolkata Test

ESPNcricinfo staff12-Nov-20194:02

Rahane on first tryst with pink ball and sessions under Dravid

Playing late, and close to the body, is the key to counter the pink ball – that’s the early learning India’s Test vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane is taking back with him after training against the pink ball for the first time over the past few days.Rahane was part of a small bunch of players from the Indian Test squad, who practised with the pink ball at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru in the lead up to the Bangladesh Test series, which includes a day-night Test, the first for either team, in Kolkata from November 22.Not many top-drawer Indian players have actually played competitive cricket with the pink ball, which Rahane said was a “different ball game” from the red ball. “We had two good practice sessions, actually three or four but two in pink ball, one during the day and one under lights,” Rahane said at a press conference in the lead up to the first Test in Indore. “It was actually exciting. It was the first time I played with pink ball, and definitely it’s a different ball game as compared to red ball.”ALSO READ: SG pink ball to be used for maiden day-night Test in IndiaAlong with Rahane, the others who were present at NCA were Mayank Agarwal and Cheteshwar Pujara among the batsmen, and Mohammed Shami and Ravindra Jadeja. The training sessions took place under the stewardship of NCA director of cricket, Rahul Dravid.”Our focus during the practice session was to look into the swing and seam, and also play close to our body,” Rahane said. “What we found out after the practice session that the pink ball does a lot (more) than the red ball. We have to play slightly late and close to your body. We had word with Rahul also as he was there. We had a very good practice session. Right now the focus is on the first Test match, the red SG ball.”The Kolkata Test will also be the first time SG pink balls will be used at the highest level, making it a trial for the balls as well. Incidentally, the BCCI had preferred the Kookaburra in the Duleep Trophy, which has been played under lights in the last three seasons. Irrespective of the make, it will take some adjusting for the players to do, but Rahane was confident it wouldn’t be a problem.”The lateral movement is big, actually a lot than the red ball,” he said. “Adjustment-wise, I’m sure everyone will adjust very quickly. We are used to playing different formats – after T20s we play Tests. It’s just the mindset, technical skills will play a role. Mentally if you can adjust to the pink ball, then it’ll be good.”Speaking to ESPNcricinfo in September, more than one prominent Indian domestic player had given the thumbs-down to the pink ball, with Faiz Fazal saying, “There was nothing for bowlers (with the pink ball).”Suresh Raina tosses the pink ball to Ashok Dinda during the 2016-17 Duleep Trophy•AFPWith barely any experience of playing with the pink ball, Rahane did not want to get drawn into comparing the SG and the Kookaburra. But he said the SG pink helped the spinners get more revolutions on the ball. “We played against spinners in Bangalore, and they were getting good revs on the ball. Yes, the shine is completely different to the red ball, but it’s very hard to compare with SG ball and the Kookaburra ball.”I’ve never played with the pink ball. And what I’ve heard from other people is that the Kookaburra ball is actually really easy for the batsmen. But what we saw in Bangalore and played in Bangalore is that the SG ball was doing a bit for the fast bowlers. For spinners, it is difficult but it is very hard for me to say right now about Kookaburra and SG ball.”Unlike Rahane, Pujara has encountered the pink ball in the past, at the 2016 Duleep Trophy, when he topped the scorers’ chart with 453 runs from three innings, hitting two centuries including an unbeaten 256 not out.”I have played with the pink ball, in the Duleep Trophy, and the experience was a good one. The day-night Test will be a five-day game, those were four-day games, this will be a Test-match scenario, so it will be exciting,” he told bcci.tv.He did, however, concede that some of the other batsmen did have problems picking the ball, especially in the latter stages of the days and when facing wristspinners.”During the day, there will be no visibility issues with the pink ball. In my experience, the twilight period and the period under lights are more difficult. Those sessions will be crucial,” he said. “My experience as a batsman was a good one. Even as a team we did well. But some of the other players I had spoken to said that especially when facing a wristspinner, their wrong’uns were difficult to pick. When Kuldeep (Yadav) was bowling, it was difficult to pick his wrong’un.”India and Bangladesh, as well as Afghanistan and Ireland, are the only teams to not have played a pink-ball Test yet, and their maiden foray in the new direction came about when Sourav Ganguly, soon after taking charge as the BCCI president, proposed the plan calling it a “huge step forward”, and the BCB, after discussing the matter with the players, gave it the go-ahead.

Who is Everton starlet Reece Welch?

Everton manager Frank Lampard must cash in on Michael Keane according to former player Kevin Campbell. Speaking to Goodison News he said that the defender has had a “horrendous” season with Everton, but that he could be useful to another team as a squad player.

It was reported in The Daily Star recently that West Ham United would be willing to pay £20m for the defender, and we think that the Toffees should cash in on him and give one of their young prospects a chance.

The club could cut their losses over Keane, who signed from Burnley as part of a spending spree in 2017 and give 18-year old academy player Reece Welch a chance with the first team.

Initially, he may not be used as a direct replacement due to a lack of experience, but he could develop well if involved, and become a key player over a number of years.

With the end of the season fast approaching Everton are fighting to retain their Premier League status and Keane has been at the centre of that misery. The club are sixth on the list when it comes to most goals conceded this season in the Premier League, with the 29-year-old appearing in 28 of the 33 games played.

If they were able to secure a significant fee for him then it’s a no brainer surely. Former manager at Goodison Park, Sam Allardyce, recently told talkSPORT that Everton “could crack under pressure”, and with some of their performances so far this season ‘lacking fight’, why would you want those players around the dressing room.

One of the advantages with giving younger players a chance is that they are often fearless as they have a point to prove, wanting to show everyone they are good enough to play at the top level. Welch has also risen through the ranks at Finch Farm so would know what an honour it is to wear an Everton shirt.

The England U20 international made his debut for the first team in March, coming on as a substitute in their FA Cup victory over Borehamwood.

He has also appeared 22 times in Premier League 2 this season showing consistency having been promoted from the U18s last summer. The Guardian ranked him in their next-generation list in 2020 where they looked at the 20 best talents at Premier League clubs.

In the process, journalist Andy Hunter described him as “skilful” and “composed” in the backline.

Having trust in youth has worked for the Toffees in the past and we think it can work again now, and could benefit them in the long run as well.

Smith was superb for Liverpool last season, so superb that Arsenal decided to fork out a £1 million ($1.35m) fee to make the 20-year-old the most expensive female footballer of all-time just last month. Her nine goals for a team that managed just 22 as a whole was enough to earn her recognition at the PFA Awards, too, with her fellow pros voting her the Young Player of the Year.

Smith had stern competition for the accolade as well. Also nominated were Mary Fowler, whose league-leading seven assists were enough to put her in the mix for the main Player of the Year award; Aggie Beever-Jones, the young England star who top-scored for treble-winning Chelsea; Grace Clinton, another promising Lioness who stood out for Manchester United; plus two more talented prospects in the Blues' dominant year, in Wieke Kaptein and Maika Hamano.

DID YOU KNOW?

Making Smith's season all the more impressive was the fact that it was her first in the WSL. Having enjoyed a senior breakthrough at Sporting in Portugal the year prior, Liverpool paid a club-record fee to bring the then-19-year-old over to Merseyside and the way she took to her new challenge had few believing the Reds would be able top keep hold of her for long. Indeed, it was just one season in the end.

Now, Smith has a new big task ahead, as she looks to break into the Gunners' first-team on a regular basis this coming season. Her club debut could come on the WSL's opening weekend, with Arsenal to start at the Emirates against newly-promoted London City Lionesses on September 6.
