Leeds could repeat Roofe masterclass with move for "wonderful" EFL star

da jogodeouro: Time is running out for Leeds United to dip into the transfer market to bolster their squad before the January transfer window slams shut at the start of February.

da supremo: The Whites have yet to make a splash this month but are not in any desperate need of reinforcements as they sit at the top of the Championship table as it stands.

A relatively comfortable 3-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday at Elland Road on Sunday ensured that they moved back to the summit, after Sheffield United had overtaken them on Saturday.

Goals from Manor Solomon, Largie Ramazani, and Ao Tanaka secured all three points for the West Yorkshire outfit, whilst Illan Meslier kept a clean sheet between the sticks.

Instead of splashing the cash on a big name from the Premier League, or on an exciting player from abroad, Leeds could do a smaller piece of business and take a gamble on a domestic option.

The Whites have had success when dipping into the Football League to pick up promising young talent in the past, with Kemar Roofe one excellent example of them doing that.

Leeds United's Kemar Roofe masterclass

In the summer of 2016, Leeds swooped to sign Kemar Roofe from Oxford United in a deal that was reported to be worth around £3m after the centre-forward had caught the eye in League Two.

The English-born attacker had produced 17 goals and ten assists in 40 appearances in League Two during the 2015/16 campaign, which convinced the Whites to spend £3m on the young dynamo.

Former Leeds striker Kemar Roofe.

Roofe was not an instant hit at Elland Road, though, as the former Oxford man only found the back of the net four times in 49 appearances in all competitions in his first season with the club.

The Leeds striker needed that year to settle into life in West Yorkshire and in the Championship, having played in League Two prior to that, and stepped his game up in the following two campaigns.

As you can see in the table above, Roofe made himself a reliable goal threat for the Whites in his second and third years at the club in the Championship, scoring 25 goals.

The Jamaica international only started 52 of those matches, almost averaging a goal every other start, and helped Leeds to make the semi-finals of the play-offs in the 2018/19 campaign under Bielsa.

Roofe’s form for Leeds attracted interest from elsewhere and Belgian giants Anderlecht swooped in to secure his services for a reported fee of up to £7m in the summer of 2019.

The West Yorkshire outfit, therefore, played a masterclass by snapping the striker up for £3m, as they got two terrific seasons out of him before cashing in for a profit of £4m.

Leeds could look to repeat the blinder they played with Roofe in the current January transfer window by raiding Oxford United for another one of their young talents.

Leeds interested in Oxford gem

Football Insider recently reported that Leeds are one of a number of teams interested in signing Tyler Goodrham from Gary Rowett’s side this month.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The outlet claimed that the Whites, Swansea City, Sunderland, and Coventry City are all vying to secure a deal for the 21-year-old starlet to bolster their respective squads.

It states that all four teams are keeping tabs on the Oxford United star and are plotting late-window moves to snap up the attacking midfielder ahead of the second half of the season.

This means that Leeds may have to act fast if they want to secure his services this month because there is plenty of interest from other sides in the division.

Football Insider’s report did not, though, reveal how much money it would take to convince Oxford to part ways with their young starlet midway through the season.

Leeds must, now, make a move to win the race for Goodrham because the talented youngster could come in as a terrific long-term addition to Daniel Farke’s squad.

Why Leeds should sign Tyler Goodrham

Instead of signing a big name, like Buendia – for example, who can come in and be expected to make an immediate impact in the second half of the season, the Whites could sign the Oxford gem with a view to him being a key player for the German boss in the future.

At the age of 21, the Irish dynamo would come in as a young talent with plenty of time left ahead of him to develop and improve over the years to come.

He could spend the second half of this season as a squad player for Leeds and learn from the likes of Brenden Aaronson, Wilfried Gnonto, and Largie Ramazani, among others, to improve and hone his skills, as a winger or as an attacking midfielder.

The versatile forward, who can play centrally or out wide, has produced three goals and three assists in 25 appearances in the Championship so far this term, which means that he has shown promise in the final third without being a consistent threat.

Goodrham, who was hailed as a “wonderful” player by ex-boss Des Buckingham, made his breakthrough as a regular starter in League One last season and helped his side earn promotion up to the second tier.

As you can see in the table above, the young attacker contributed with 12 direct goal contributions in just 23 starts, which speaks to his potential to make a big impact in the final third when he is at his best.

Like they did with Roofe, Leeds may have to be patient with Goodrham and accept that he is unlikely to be a key star right away, given his decent, but unspectacular, return this season, but with the hope that he will follow in Roofe’s footsteps and grow into a valuable asset for the club in the future.

Tammy Beaumont scored a double-century as England Women piled on 510 runs in a day to build a huge 390-run lead against Australia A Women during a three-day warm-up for the Women’s Ashes Test at Trent Bridge next week.Beaumont retired out on 201 from 238 balls in Derby with England 611 for 7 in response to 221 all out by an Australia A side captained by left-arm spinner Jess Jonassen, the only member of Australia’s Test squad to move into the A side for the build-up game.Beaumont and Emma Lamb, who fell for 10 on Thursday when she was caught by Tahlia Wilson off the bowling of Maitlan Brown, are England’s incumbent Test openers, having done the job in last year’s draw with South Africa at Taunton. Heather Knight, Nat Sciver-Brunt and Sophia Dunkley all scored half-centuries and Amy Jones cruised to 88 off just 65 balls before Jonassen had her caught by Brown.Related

Jones was full of praise for Beaumont’s knock, which resumed on 65 on the second morning with England 120 runs behind with nine wickets in hand. She shared a 170-run partnership with captain Knight for the second wicket and 148 with Sciver-Brunt, Knight’s deputy, for the third.”Five hundred runs in a day is a great effort and Tammy set that up brilliantly,” Jones said. “I thought it was an incredible innings really. I don’t remember any chances. She just looked really free flowing and soaked up pressure in the harder moments of the game as well, so she was brilliant and we had some good partnerships throughout which is good to see.”But an intriguing sub-plot was developing in Leicester, where England A, led by captain by Lauren Winfield-Hill, took a lead of 278 runs after two days of their three-day warm-up against Australia’s Test players. Winfield-Hill, who lost her England central contract ahead of this season amid a nine-month period of being overlooked for the senior side, reached 106 from 148 deliveries batting at No. 4 before legspinner Alana King had her caught by Georgia Wareham.Meanwhile Danni Wyatt, who is part of England’s Test squad but moved to the A side this week, scored 37 off 43 balls at No. 5 before she was trapped lbw by Australia pace spearhead Darcie Brown. Wyatt had moved to the top of the order in the shorter formats last year when Winfield-Hill lost her place during the 50-over World Cup and Beaumont was dropped from the T20 side ahead of the Commonwealth Games. Winfield-Hill made a return to T20Is during England’s winter tour of West Indies, twice batting at No. 3 below Wyatt, who has played 245 white-ball internationals but is yet to make her Test debut.Paige Scholfield, the leading run-scorer in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy so far this season, also scored a century, while Bess Heath and Grace Scrivens, who led England to the Under-19 T20 World Cup final earlier this year, scored a half-centuries against the Australians.Ashleigh Gardner, the Australian allrounder named Player of the Tournament after helping her side lift the T20 World Cup in February, didn’t bowl as a precaution after being hit on the right index finger while catching before play on Thursday. While there was some swelling, the injury didn’t trouble her while batting or fielding and she was expected to be fit for the Test starting on Thursday.England A closed on 562 for 9 in reply to Australia’s first-innings 284, which was built on opener Beth Mooney’s century. Kim Garth was the pick on a “tough day” for Australia’s bowlers, with 4 for 69, and King claimed three wickets.”There is a lot of positives to come out of it though,” Garth said. “I think we actually did quite well on a wicket that’s not offering much for the bowlers. Credit to them as well, they did bat very well. If you asked the coaching staff upstairs, I think they probably would have wanted a game like this rather than just cruising through three days of cricket so I think there’s plenty to take out of it into next week.”

Australia 'a little bit rattled' by Lanning's sudden Ashes withdrawal

Stand-in captain Alyssa Healy admitted it’s been ‘a rough couple of days’ amid mixed emotions

Alex Malcolm and Andrew McGlashan29-May-20231:39

Alyssa Healy: ‘Grappling with being excited and nervous about captaining in Ashes’

Australia were left rattled by the news of Meg Lanning’s sudden withdrawal from the Ashes tour, and stand-in captain Alyssa Healy admitted it had been an emotional few days, but there is a determination to ensure they do not let it derail their hopes of success in England. The squad gathered in Brisbane on Monday for their latest training camp ahead of their departure but will travel without captain Lanning, who has withdrawn from the series to remain at home to manage an undisclosed medical issue.”I’ve finally probably come to terms with it, it’s been a rough couple of days,” Healy told ESPNcricinfo. “Everyone is a little bit emotional about the whole Meg situation but at the same time I’m grappling with being really excited and nervous about the challenge of captaining an Ashes series.”Australia head coach Shelley Nitschke could not shed any light on what Lanning was dealing with – although it’s understood not to be related to her break from the game last year – but admitted her sudden absence from the tour had rocked the squad as they gathered together for the first time since the announcement was made on Saturday.”I’m sure they were a little bit rattled by the news,” Nitschke said. “But I think Meg is in our thoughts. We also know that she wants us to go over there and get the job done.”We’ve had some time to sort of get our head around it now and having the girls up here this week, it’s really nice to get them together.”Australia have dealt with Lanning’s absence previously during the successful T20I tour of India late last year when Lanning took a break from the game with Healy standing in as captain and vice-captain Tahlia McGrath taking one game when she was injured. Nitschke believes that Healy and the group will be able to handle Lanning’s absence again.Related

Lanning ruled out of the Ashes, Healy to lead Australia

Healy considers ditching Test match opening role

Meg Lanning takes indefinite break from cricket for personal reasons

“[Healy] had a big couple of days herself, to find out that she’s captaining for an Ashes series,” Nitschke said. “But I think the fact that she captained the team in India last year and did a fantastic job, the girls got around her, played some really good cricket, so I think she should take a lot of confidence out of that and I think she enjoyed it.”I think we’ve got some really good leaders in the group. We’ve got a lot of experience in the group. I think one thing that we’ve been really good at over the years is just being able to adapt and take some knocks as they come. I’ve got the utmost confidence in our group to head across and hopefully get the job done.”The India tour is an experience Healy is now even more grateful for as she embarks on the pressure and expectation of an Ashes.”I’m a firm believer that everything happens for a reason and I’m kind of glad that happened over in India, that I was thrown amongst it and got to do it the way we wanted to,” she said. “It was new for Shell as well so we were both going there and leaving our mark on the group. Grateful to have that experience and hopefully we can carry on from where that left off and get amongst England.”Alyssa Healy is considering not opening in Tests•Getty Images

However, the void Lanning leaves in Australia’s top order might not be as easily covered in the Test match, given there are already holes to fill. Lanning and Healy have occupied a spot in the top three in two of the last three Tests Australia have played dating back to the 2019 Ashes. Healy opened in all three games while the recently retired Rachael Haynes opened in Australia’s last two Tests. Lanning batted at No. 5 in the last women’s Ashes Test in early 2022 in Canberra and made 93 in the first innings, her highest Test score. In Lanning’s absence, Healy is highly likely to step away from the opening role given the captaincy has been added to her wicketkeeping duties.”It’s a lot on her plate,” Nitschke said. “I think it’s a definite conversation that we’ll be having pretty soon to see how that might look for her in the batting order.”Australia did pair Beth Mooney and Phoebe Litchfield together with great success in the ODI series against Pakistan earlier this year when Healy was injured. Mooney has opened in three of her seven Test innings and batted at No.3 in the last Test against England in 2022 and looks set to replace Haynes, while Litchfield made 78 not out and 67 not out in her first two ODIs opening the batting and is well and truly in the frame to make her Test debut in Nottingham.”Phoebe is so talented…so she’s certainly got the attributes,” Nitschke said. “I think when we get over there in the English conditions, we’ve been training here with red balls and we had some overcast conditions in the first camp, but it’s just different again over there.”I think there’s a little bit to play out before we sort of work out who our best XI is for that Test match. But Phoebs is certainly putting her hand up. We’ll see where it lands.”Australia, who have been training with the red Dukes ball in Brisbane ahead of the Test, will play a two day intrasquad game this week involving players from the Australia A squad.

Manchester City players whose contracts are expiring in 2025 – list

da spicy bet: Manchester City have three players who are out contract at the end of this season, including one of the greatest heroes in the club’s history.

da fezbet: Pep Guardiola’s side may be enduring a season to forget in the Premier League, especially by their incredible standards, but there are signs that they may have turned a corner.

It feels like the end of an era at the Etihad, in terms of some legendary figures drifting past their peak, so big changes could happen within the squad during the summer transfer window.

5 potential replacements for Kevin De Bruyne at Manchester City

With Kevin De Bruyne into his 10th season at Manchester City, here are 5 possible successors if he says goodbye to the Etihad.

ByBarney Lane Oct 20, 2024

There are three players whose contracts expire at City this summer – will they all be moving on?

1 Scott Carson Contract expires: 30th June 2025

It’s almost a running joke that Scott Carson is still a City player considering how little he has featured for them since arriving from Derby County back in 2021, having initially joined on loan in 2019.

The English veteran was brought in as a way of improving the Citizens’ homegrown quota, but he has only made two appearances in that time, warming the substitutes’ bench or not even being in the matchday squad most weeks.

Now 39 years of age, Carson’s time at City looks likely to come to an end once this season reaches its conclusion, having signed a one-year extension last year. He turns 40 in September, and the club will surely be able to find a stronger homegrown option between the sticks – perhaps someone who is equally happy to play a squad role.

2 Kevin De Bruyne Contract expires: 30th June 2025

When you think of the best players in City’s history, it is impossible not to think of Kevin De Bruyne, who has lit up the Etihad on so many occasions. The Belgian is not only one of the Citizens’ true greats, but one of finest players to grace the Premier League.

Now 33, cracks have started to appear with De Bruyne in terms of injuries racking up and his legs not quite having as much energy in them, meaning there is a massive decision for the club to make at the end of the season.

The midfielder is out of contract at that point, and he can sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club now that the January window is open.

It does feel increasingly as though his time as a City player is coming to an end. Kyle Walker has asked for a move to a different country and it is easy to see the same happening with De Bruyne.

Of course, there is the option for City to offer De Bruyne an extension should they feel that there is still plenty of life in him, but there is a question mark against that. Keeping him on with huge wages would be a big risk, with Guardiola potentially feeling that a younger replacement needs to be found to inject fresh blood into his starting XI.

If De Bruyne does depart in the summer, there will no doubt be a special ovation for him at some point at the Etihad, as City’s supporters hail one of the most talented footballers in their history.

3 Ilkay Gundogan Contract expires: 30th June 2025

The return of Ilkay Gundogan last summer was met with plenty of excitement by some City supporters given what an influential and legendary figure he was during his first stint at the Etihad. It was a move that made plenty of sense, allowing the German to return to the club for free after a short spell at Barcelona.

However, it hasn’t quite worked out the way Gundogan and Guardiola would have hoped, with the 34-year-old looking his age, not least after Rodri’s ACL injury saw City’s midfield lose so much of its dynamism.

As has always been the case with the German, Gundogan’s effort levels cannot be questioned, but he simply isn’t able to cover ground as effortlessly as he once did, and this has undoubtedly played a part in City’s struggles.

The former Germany international signed a one-year deal with the Citizens last year, but he also has the option to extend his stay at the Etihad by another 12 months. A recent report has claimed that Gundogan’s future is uncertain, with the likes of Galatasaray eyeing him up at the end of the season.

Like De Bruyne, it may just be the right time for City to move him on, allowing Guardiola to begin a new era at the club by signing players in their 20s instead of having ageing figures in the middle of the park.

James Anderson is a doubt for England’s first Test of the summer, starting against Ireland on June 1, after confirmation that he had suffered a “minor strain to his right groin” while playing for Lancashire.Anderson did not participate any further in the County Championship game against Somerset at Old Trafford after returning figures of 14-7-16-2 on day one. His absence was met with no official update of an injury until the ECB belatedly released the news on Sunday evening, less than three weeks before the game at Lord’s.England are expected to announce their squad to face Ireland next week, with Anderson, who went for a scan on Saturday, set to be “assessed nearer the time”, according to an ECB statement. With the Ashes beginning in little over a month, and Lancashire playing no first-class cricket between now and June 11, Anderson could struggle to prove his fitness ahead of the first Test of the series at Edgbaston. The injury will spark memories of Australia’s visit in 2019, when Anderson played the opener but bowled just four overs before suffering a series-ending calf strain. The 40-year-old, who is the third-highest wicket-taker in Test history, has played four out of five matches for Lancashire so far this season, claiming 16 wickets at 20.30.England are already likely to be without Jofra Archer for the start of the Ashes, after the fast bowler returned early from the IPL to continue rehabilitation on a longstanding elbow problem, while Olly Stone is expected to be out for a number of weeks due to a hamstring strain sustained while playing for Nottinghamshire.
