Arsenal table formal bid to sign £52 million man who's "perfect" for Arteta
The Gunners are moving quickly pre-summer.
ByEmilio Galantini May 15, 2024
Indeed, it is believed Arsenal are open to summer offers for Thomas Partey, with the Ghanaian's contract set to expire next year. Fitness issues, combined with the good form of some teammates, have unfortunately reduced Partey's role in comparison to previous seasons.
Uncertainty surrounds his future at the Emirates Stadium as a result, with fellow midfielder Mohamed Elneny also looking set to leave when his deal runs out this summer. Arsenal have been doing some legwork on signing a possible replacement for Partey already, despite the summer window not opening until June 14.
Arsenal's rumoured midfield targets since the beginning of 2024
Douglas Luiz (Aston Villa)
Amadou Onana (Everton)
Martin Zubimendi (Real Sociedad)
Bruno Guimaraes (Newcastle United)
Manu Kone (Borussia Monchengladbach)
Reports claim sporting director Edu and Arsenal chiefs have initiated contact with Bruno Guimaraes and his reps about joining for 24/25, but sealing a deal for the Brazil international would be both expensive and complicated, with Manchester City also lurking for a deal.
His Magpies contract will include a £100 million release clause, but only temporarily. As first revealed by Fabrizio Romano, Guimaraes' exit clause will be valid from the last week of May to the beginning of the final week of June, making it a race between the two title chasers.
A much more astute alternative for a cheaper price could be Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi. The Spaniard's contract includes a £52 million release clause, which would be half the price of Guimaraes, and he's even been called the "perfect midfielder" for them.
“My personal feeling is that Zubimendi would be fantastic," said Romano on which midfielder Arsenal should sign. "Even if [Amadou] Onana and Douglas [Luiz] have the advantage of both already knowing the Premier League. Zubimendi is fantastic player, he can help with his vision, quality and intelligence on the ball – he’s the perfect midfielder."
Arteta "working hard" to convince Zubimendi to join Arsenal
According to a report by The Boot Room this week, Arsenal's manager is now taking things into his own hands when it comes to bringing in the 25-year-old.
They claim Arteta is personally "working hard" to tempt Zubimendi into joining Arsenal, and the Sociedad stalwart is said to be the club's top choice to reinforce their midfield.
Other reports claim Arsenal have already bid for Zubimendi pre-summer, so it would appear they're attempting to grant the 42-year-old's wish for Zubimendi's arrival.
He's on around £58,000-per-week according to Football Transfers, so it wouldn't take much to improve his salary, as double that amount wouldn't even put him in touching distance of Arsenal's highest earners.
PCB chief executive Wasim Khan “quietly confident” tour will go ahead in January
George Dobell15-Oct-2020The ECB has confirmed it is in talks with the PCB about a short tour to Pakistan in late January or early February. The tour, first revealed as a possibility by ESPNcricinfo last week, is likely to consist of three T20Is and would be England’s first visit to Pakistan since late 2005.Speaking on Friday*, PCB chief executive, Wasim Khan, said he was “quietly confident” that the series would go ahead.”We have a good relationship with the ECB people,” Khan said. “There was no deal struck when we went over to England [in July] but it’s been a constant communication, chairman to chairman, CEO to CEO. The British High Commissioner has done a fantastic job in getting this on to the table for us as well. You need lots of people pulling in the right direction, and we are quietly confident. We’ll support the ECB in all their assessments, everything they need to do, to try and get that series on in January.ALSO READ: England’s winter tours – What is the current state of play?”I wrote to them on the 12th of October, on behalf of the PCB, inviting them to Pakistan. There was clearly a statement from the ECB acknowledging that we’d written to them. It’s now just waiting for the formal response, and within that we’ll talk about what the next steps are, which will be the Covid assessments, security assessments, all of those things that need to be ticked off. But there’s a huge will from the ECB to come and do this because they know the importance for the global game but also cricket in Pakistan.”While England are not currently scheduled to tour Pakistan until late 2022, the PCB issued this invitation in the hope that England may have around a week between their tour of Sri Lanka, which is currently planned for January, and their Test and limited-overs series against India, which are due to take place from late January and into March. The ECB appears keen to make the tour happen. Not only is it grateful for Pakistan’s recently concluded tour of England – Pakistan’s players were obliged to spend several weeks in lockdown due to Covid-19 protocols – but it is mindful of the powerful message such a tour would send to a country which was starved of top-flight cricket for many years due to security concerns.”After discussions with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), we can confirm the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has received an invitation in respect of a short white-ball tour to Pakistan during the early part of 2021,” the ECB said in a statement. “We welcome the fact that international cricket is returning to Pakistan and are committed to doing what we can to help this develop further.”As with any proposed tour that takes place at this time, the safety and welfare of our players and staff is paramount. As such, there are a number of factors that need to be taken into consideration, including the proposed protocols in relation to Covid-19 bio-secure bubbles, the proposed levels of security around the team, as well as the feasibility of undertaking this tour against the backdrop of an already busy schedule of international cricket for the England men’s team.Moeen Ali hammers a blow down the ground•Getty Images
“We will be liaising with the PCB, and as well as other partners over the coming weeks to work through these considerations, before a final decision will be taken in due course.”Quite a few pieces of the jigsaw will have to come together before the tour can be confirmed. For a start, the ECB is likely to need to prioritise obligations which are already scheduled – the Sri Lanka Test series was originally meant to be played in March 2020 – and there is still some doubt over where the games against India will be played. While it looks overwhelmingly likely the fixtures will be played in the UAE due to prevalence of Covid-19 in India, the BCCI is yet to officially acknowledge this. Due to the political tensions between the countries and current health requirements, it may also prove problematic to travel directly between Pakistan and India in the limited time available.Recent reports from security consultants suggests that confidence in this regard have risen considerably. While security for the tour would no doubt be extremely tight, there has been an acceptance within the ECB for some time that the tour in 2022 was viable. The PCB will also need to satisfy the ECB’s medical team that its plans for a bio-bubble are adequate. As has become standard in recent years, players uncomfortable with going on the tour are likely to be allowed to skip it without consequence. If the tour does take place, it may be considered something of a coup for Khan. British-born Khan has come in for criticism from some aspects of Pakistan’s media since he was appointed to the role almost two years ago. But he has forged a strong relationship with Tom Harrison, his counterpart at the ECB, and has worked hard to assuage the security concerns touring teams had until recently. If this tour goes ahead, one of the key aims of his time with the PCB will have been achieved.*October 16, 1.30pm BST – This story was updated with Wasim Khan’s quotes

da heads bet: After an impressive start to the 2023/24 season for Tottenham Hotspur, their form has been patchy at best of late.
da winzada777: During the first ten games of the season, the Lilywhites had 26 points, which included eight wins and two draws. Former Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou set the record for the most points accumulated by a new manager in their first ten Premier League games, as per Opta Joe.
However, since then, Spurs have played 24 games, winning ten, losing ten and drawing four. They have earned 34 points in that time, and have a goal difference of zero. It is fair to say that they have been hit-and-miss.
With that being said, Postecoglou’s side currently sit fifth in the Premier League table, on 60 points. However, they are seven points behind Aston Villa in fourth, although they do have a game in hand.
Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou
This season, Spurs have had a couple of injuries to crucial players at important times. James Maddison picked up an ankle injury in November to halt his fast start to the campaign, and Mickey van de Ven has had two separate hamstring injuries, causing him to miss a total of 12 games.
Recently, first-choice left-back Destiny Udogie has fallen foul of injury and will miss the rest of the season, and Euro 2024. The Italian has played 29 games in the Premier League this term, scoring two goals and registering three assists.
According to Fbref, also Udogie averages 5.83 progressive passes per 90, placing him in the top 10% of Premier League full-backs, and 4.33 final third passes, ranking him in the top 18%.
The 21-year-old is also a wonderful ball-carrier, averaging 3.12 progressive carries per 90 minutes, which places him in the top 12%, and 2.45 carries into the final third, which places him in the top 5%. He is a key component of Spurs’ ball progression.
Tottenham star Destiny Udogie.
Off the ball, Udogie is also an astute defender and averages 6.36 ball recoveries per 90 minutes, which ranks him in the top 9% of Premier League full-backs. 3.95 tackles and interceptions per 90 minutes, which places him in the top 16%.
With Udogie’s injury a real blow to Spurs, there are a few options Postecoglou could turn to as a replacement. Ben Davies struggled in the North London Derby two weeks ago and did not play against Chelsea on Thursday. However, the Spurs boss has alternatives who could fill in at left-back whilst Udogie is sidelined, starting with this Sunday’s trip to Anfield to face Liverpool.
The obvious choice to start at left-back for Spurs is Emerson Royal. The versatile defender has played all across the backline this season, including six times at left-back, where he lined up against Chelsea just two days ago.
However, the Brazil international struggled at Stamford Bridge against the Blues. According to SofaScore, Emerson won just three of his ten duels, was dribbled past six times and lost possession on ten occasions.
Despite a tough showing, Emerson is still a good option for Postecoglou, as his Fbref stats reflect. The 25-year-old Brazil international averages 4.39 tackles and interceptions this season in the Premier League, which places him in the top 10%, and 6.46 ball recoveries per 90 minutes, which ranks him in the top 8%.
Chalkboard
Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.
With that being said, he lacks some of the progressive skills that Udogie possesses, and could well struggle to help Spurs progress play, especially when playing out from the back. Emerson averages just 4.23 progressive passes per 90 minutes, which ranks him in the 75th percentile.
He is certainly a good option for Postecoglou, especially if he wants a more defensive-minded player coming up against Liverpool and Mohamed Salah.
2 Tactical tweak Micky van de Ven
Micky van de Ven celebrates for Tottenham
An alternative option that Postecoglou has at left-back is to play Dutch defender Micky van de Ven out there, thus bringing Radu Dragusin into the side at centre-back. Whilst this may seem like an odd option, Van de Ven has actually played there before.
The 23-year-old has featured 15 times at left-back during his career, although never for Spurs, which could be a stumbling block. In fact, it has been almost one year since he has slotted in at left-back, playing 90 minutes there for Wolfsburg against Hertha Berlin last season.
Regardless, Van de Ven is still a good progressor of play, and, as per Fbref, averages 4.14 progressive passes per 90 minutes, and 4.78 final third passes per 90 minutes. This places him in the top 24% and the top 20% respectively.
Not only that, Van de Ven’s pace will surely stand him in good stead for a spell at left-back. Should he decide to venture forward, he is lightning-quick, which led football podcast host Michael Caley to describe him as an “utter freak”.
Van de Ven certainly possesses the recovery pace to get back in time. The defender averages 5.82 ball recoveries per 90 minutes, which ranks him in the top 14% of Premier League centre-backs this season.
Starting Van de Ven at left-back is certainly a good option for Postecoglou. Whilst he may not have a wealth of experience in that role, the 23-year-old is quality on the ball, and a great defender, meaning he should be able to handle Salah well.
3 Wildcard option Jahziah Linton
The outside shout Postecoglou has at his disposal is Spurs academy defender Jahziah Linton. The 19-year-old has made seven appearances in Premier League 2 this season, although he is yet to register a goal involvement.
The youngster signed his first professional deal last season, where he spent the majority of the time in the under-18s, but has since spent his first full year as a professional footballer in the under-21 side.
It would, of course, be a risk to throw Linton into the side against Liverpool and Salah for his professional debut. However, some youngsters thrive in those scenarios, and there is nothing to say Linton would not take to the situation like a duck to water.
Regardless, Postecoglou certainly has some big decisions ahead of Sunday afternoon’s game at Anfield. It is a massive game for Spurs in their chase for the top four, and defeat could all but confirm their place in the Europa League next season.

Ness Wadia believes IPL 2020 is not under threat despite the Covid-19 cases in the CSK camp•Getty Images
Kings XI Punjab co-owner Ness Wadia on Thursday said the Covid-19 positive cases in the Chennai Super Kings contingent could have hit any of the eight franchises and wants only those people in the IPL bio-bubble who are “really required” to be with the players. Thirteen members of the CSK contingent, including two players, tested positive for the virus last week, raising safety concerns for the tournament taking place in the UAE amid the pandemic.”The CSK incident has taught us that it can happen to anyone even when the best of precautions are taken and therefore we must be more compliant and rigid on the bio-bubble protocols. We need to ensure only those who are really required to be with the players are part of the bubble,” Wadia told .The franchisees’ non-player and non-coaching staff includes team operations manager, and social media specialists. The cricketers are also required to spend time with the marketing staff during photo shoots which will be held closer to the IPL beginning September 19. The CEOs and owners, most of whom are yet to reach the UAE, are also allowed in the bio-bubble but any violation of the BCCI’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) will send them into a seven-day quarantine.”The number of staff outside of the teams and their support staff and the match officials should be limited to the absolute minimum,” the BCCI SOPs say. When asked if he would be travelling for the tournament, Wadia said: “I have not finalised my plans but I normally don’t interact a lot with the players. I have spoken to Anil Kumble (head coach) twice so far just to check what is going on. I am very comfortable interacting on Zoom and other [online communication platforms].”Wadia asserted that there is nothing to worry about in the wake of developments at Super Kings as positive cases have also been found in major European football leagues on resumption. Even NBA players have tested positive.”The BCCI has put internationally established protocols in place,” Wadia said. “If you look at the football leagues, there were cases in the beginning and the highest of precautions were taken. There are so many variables [in the current situation]. I don’t think people need to worry at all. Things will get better and smoother as we go forward.”The teams will have to cope with a financial hit as their share from the BCCI central revenue pool stands reduced after new title sponsor Dream11 paid nearly half (INR 222 crore) of what Vivo was paying. The teams will also lose out on the gate money with the tournament held overseas and in front of empty stadiums. Delhi Capitals chairman Parth Jindal has predicted a 30% drop in teams’ revenues in case the BCCI doesn’t compensate them.Wadia said his team too is seeking compensation from the board but he also chose to look at the brighter side.”Every problem is an opportunity for someone else. So now everyone (potential sponsors) is trying to take advantage of the situation,” Wadia said. “We do hope that BCCI compensates in some form or manner. Be it this year or next year for the hit we are taking. But I would rather look at glass half full than half empty. At the least, the IPL is happening after all that we have gone through this year.”

da 888casino: Philippe Clement faces arguably his most important six games in charge of Glasgow Rangers as the Premiership season enters its post-split phase.
da realbet: Five more league games followed by the Scottish Cup final could see Rangers either win a treble or finish the season having lifted only the League Cup.
Back in September – after just three wins in seven league games – being in this current position would have been classified as a success, but it feels as though the Light Blues have wasted their chance in recent weeks.
A dismal defeat to Ross County was sandwiched between draws against Celtic and Dundee which derailed the title challenge, giving their Old Firm rivals the advantage.
Ahead of the clash against St Mirren this afternoon, Clement may need to rejig his starting XI once again due to injury problems affecting his squad.
“Sima will be out, I hope to see him again this season he is very motivated for that,” said the manager during his press conference on Friday afternoon.
“Matondo got a bad tackle against Hearts and is doubtful for the weekend. Ridvan and Jack I expect back in training next week.”
Ultimately, it will be injuries which could cost the Gers another Premiership crown, as far foo many of their key players have been missing for important games.
Abdallah Sima
Sima will be the hardest to replace, but here's a a look at three options that could be considered…
1 The obvious choice Ross McCausland
Rangers forward Ross McCausland.
During the last few games Sima has featured, he has played on the right wing, which means Clement has a few options available to him who could potentially make his way into the starting XI.
McCausland would certainly be the most obvious choice, considering he is the most natural right-winger in the current squad.
Since making his breakthrough earlier this season, the 20-year-old has featured in 33 matches this season, scoring twice while notching three assists in all competitions.

Clement has nurtured him well, however, taking him out of the firing line when things get heated, which has meant the winger dropped to the bench for the previous five matches.
There is no doubting his quality though. Among his teammates in the Premiership this season, McCausland currently ranks seventh for key passes per game (1.4) along with ranking ninth for successful dribbles per game (0.8), suggesting that he has taken no time at all integrating with the rest of the first team squad.
With six games left, the Northern Irishman could fill the void left by Sima’s injury and show Clement exactly how much he wants to become a regular starter in the first team ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.
Delivering an impressive performance against St Mirren could be the catalyst for this becoming a reality.
2 The tactical tweak Todd Cantwell
Todd Cantwell
The Englishman has thrived since being used as a number ten under Clement, going on a run of scoring five league goals in seven games at the turn of the year, and it looked as though the Gers had an ideal creative talent looking to make things click.
He hasn’t scored since a 2-1 win over Aberdeen in February, however, missing a few games due to suffering a hamstring injury a couple of weeks later, which derailed the progress that he had made.
Hailed as a “catalyst” by journalist Josh Bunting following a wonderful spell towards the end of last season, it's fair to say that he hasn’t quite lived up to his billing at times this term.
Against Hearts in the Scottish Cup semi-final last weekend, the 26-year-old delivered arguably his finest performance in weeks, notching two assists as Cyriel Dessers netted twice to send the Gers back to Hampden next month for the final.
Moving him out wide to the right could allow Clement to unleash Lawrence through the middle – where he is usually best – but still have Cantwell present within the team.
The former Norwich City starlet scored against Sparta Prague from the right wing earlier this season and while it may not be his favoured role, due to Sima’s absence, it could potentially be an option for Clement against St Mirren.
3 The wildcard option Dujon Sterling
Dujon Sterling
Recently, due to Yilmaz’s injury and Borna Barisic’s worrying loss of form, Sterling had been operating as a left-back to good effect.
Against Celtic, the 24-year-old won an impressive ten of his 12 ground duels contested during the contest, along with making one key pass, attempting two dribbles and making four tackles, showing that he can shine wherever Clement deploys him.
Indeed, this season alone, Sterling has played in six positions under the Belgian, including one game as a right-winger.
Chalkboard
Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.
That came against Benfica during the first league of the Europa League last 16 clash in Portugal. Not only was it his first start in the position, but Sterling scored his first-ever senior professional goal during what was an excellent performance.
A few weeks earlier, he came off the bench to replace Scott Wright on the flank and did well during the second half, even winning a penalty and making one key pass, showing the manager that he could contribute in an attacking sense too.
The likelihood is, Clement will start Sterling at left-back like he has done for the previous few matches as it is a position he has plenty of experience in.
Should the Belgian go with Barisic, however, this may open up a space for Sterling to be deployed elsewhere, with the right-wing being a realistic option should all else fail.
Whatever team the 50-year-old tactician puts out this afternoon, all he will be expecting is a solid performance and three points, which still gives the Light Blues a chance to win the Premiership.
The last few matches will all be like cup finals and Rangers will need Celtic to drop points, but it has happened before and it will happen again. It promises to be an exciting run-in, that’s for sure.
