Players' association casts doubt on Cricket Australia's financial warnings

ACA has an ‘optimistic and confident’ outlook for how the sport can cope with the pandemic

Cricket Australia’s financial warnings have been questioned by the players’ association which has said the game’s position remains positive with the sport not yet feeling the fallout from the Covid-19 pandemic suffered by the winter codes. The Australian Cricketers’ Association (ACA), led by chairman Shane Watson, met on Monday and will now write to CA chairman Earl Eddings to express their view on the game’s situation.Last month CA chief executive Kevin Roberts said money could run short by August if significant cost-cutting didn’t take place which led to 200 staff being stood down on 20% pay, although that move itself only contributed A$3 million of A$ 20 million in savings. The players expressed their support for those who had been impacted by the cuts. The biggest concern stemmed from the possibility of India not being able to undertake their tour later this year which could cost CA A$300 million if it doesn’t take place. However, there have been questions raised about how open CA have been with their financial figures.Until now only a very small amount of cricket has been effected with the one-day series between Australia and New Zealand called off after one match and the Sheffield Shield curtailed by one round and the final. There are also positive signs as to the chances of hosting international cricket in Australia later this year.ALSO READ: Covid-19 crisis could force Australian players to be more self-reliant”Cricket is yet to suffer a significant negative revenue event associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. The financial position of cricket is therefore very positive relative to Australia’s winter sports,” ACA chief executive Alistair Nicholson wrote in an email to members seen by ESPNcricinfo.”The players express their support for staff at CA who have been stood down on 20% of their wages and wish them a speedy return to full-time work.”Cricket is able to express an optimistic and confident posture about its capacity to weather the pandemic, and has the opportunity to put in place effective plans for cricket to be played this summer. With this, cricket’s financial position will likely remain positive.”The impact of Cricket Australia’s cost cutting has been seen around the states in recent days as they brace for a 25% reduction in their grants. The CA contracts for men and women were announced on April 30 although it’s understood players were not told the actual figure they would earn, instead the percentage once the board’s financial position is clearer. The ACA reiterated that the players stand by the revenue share model which sees their payment pool rise and fall with CA’s income and added they had offered an option for further flexibility “should adverse events occur in the future.””The ACA will continue to work with CA and share these positive findings when the Australian Cricket Council is convened shortly,” Nicholson concluded. “United and coordinated, cricket is well-placed to make the most of the opportunities which will emerge as the COVID-19 pandemic eases and more normal life resumes.”The ACA board consists of Watson, Greg Dyer, Moises Henriques, Lisa Sthalekar, Alyssa Healy, Pat Cummins, Aaron Finch, Neil Maxwell, Kristen Beams and Janet Torney.

Sunderland now eyeing move to sign "outstanding" England U21 international

da betway: As Sunderland look to get back into the play-off places next season, having seen their Championship promotion hopes slowly but surely fizzle out in the current campaign, those at the Stadium of Light have already turned their attention towards the summer window.

Sunderland transfer news

da stake casino: Before the Black Cats can really begin their summer plans, however, they must secure a permanent manager following the end of Mike Dodds' interim spell at the end of the season. There's certainly pressure to get the next appointment right too, having endured the nightmare tenue of Michael Beale after deciding to part ways with Tony Mowbray.

Regretting their decision to dismiss Mowbray ever since, names such as Manchester United legend and former Sunderland manager Roy Keane have been mentioned, though Carlton Palmer was quick to shoot down those rumours recently.

A more likely option to take the hot seat may well be Steve Cooper, who has been out of a job since being sacked by Nottingham Forest earlier this season. A man who knows all about Championship promotion, there's no doubt that Cooper would be a superb appointment.

What's more, whoever does come in could get the benefit of a new shot-stopper to compete or possibly replace Anthony Patterson in the long run. According to The Sun's Alan Nixon on his Patreon, relayed by The 72, Sunderland are eyeing a move to sign Sam Tickle from Wigan Athletic this summer after his impressive performances in League One.

The England U21 international, now 22 years of age, has been one of few bright sparks at Wigan this season, with the Latics sat in mid-table and on course to miss out on promotion, forced to go again next season potentially without their number one.

Given that Tickle's current contract doesn't run out until 2026, Sunderland are likely in for tough negotiations this summer, but the step up to the Championship could be one that tempts Tickle into a departure.

"Outstanding" Tickle could compete with Patterson

Signing Tickle would leave Sunderland with two solid and young options to choose from in goal, or possibly one if Patterson departs.

Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson.

With an impressive 16 clean sheets to his name this season, Tickle has just about has the edge over Patterson in that area, with the current Sunderland shot-stopper keeping just 10 for the Black Cats so far in the current campaign.

Wigan manager Shaun Maloney may well be reluctant to let his goalkeeper go, however, having sung his praises at the end of January. Maloney said:

“This is only my opinion, but I don't think there's a better goalkeeper in our league…I'm not sure there's a better goalkeeper in the league above…he's that good! He can get even better with his feet, but shot-stopping… I haven't seen too many as good as that – when he just produces outstanding moments like he does that win games."

Tottenham chiefs really want 24 y/o seen as potential bargain signing

da aviator aposta: Tottenham chiefs are said to be very interested in signing a 24-year-old, viewed by those within the game as a potential "bargain" this summer.

Spurs transfer plans for this summer

da supremo: Spurs and technical director Johan Lange are already making transfer plans ahead of the next transfer window, and there is a variety of positions which manager Ange Postecoglou wants to strengthen ahead of this summer.

The key one is now at centre-back, with Postecoglou publicly admitting he wants another central defensive ace at Spurs despite already bringing in Radu Dragusin for £25 million from Genoa in the January window.

“If you’re saying, ‘Is it an area we can strengthen?’, yes it’s an area we will probably look at”, said Postecoglou on Tottenham's summer transfer plans last week.

“With all these things, it’s about trying to strengthen the group as much as anything else. If you think about when I first arrived, we had maybe six or seven centre-backs at the club. So it’s not just numbers. It’s more about the ability of those players to play the football we want and to fit in to what we’re trying to build here.

“I think it is an area of the park we will look to strengthen, but I think we’ll look to strengthen all areas of the park come the end of the season. That is planning that’s already underway, and other people are in charge of it at the moment.”

Spurs could also look to sign a new full-back, midfielder and striker later in the year, according to various rumours in the past few weeks. For the midfield, a name who refuses to go away is Chelsea star Conor Gallagher.

The 24-year-old's contract expires next year as things stand, and reports suggest this has heightened interest from north London, with Spurs apparently keen to do a deal for Gallagher at around £30 million.

Whether or not this is doable remains to be seen, as Chelsea are believed to value the Englishman at around £50 million regardless of his contract situation.

Tottenham really want Gallagher, viewed as a potential "bargain"

Nevertheless, the midfielder's dwindling current deal could put Chelsea under pressure to sell for much less.

That is according to Football Insider, who also claim that clubs across England and Europe view Gallagher as a potential "bargain signing" this summer. Gallagher is of "significant interest" to Tottenham heading into the transfer window, as per FI, with their London rivals braced for "cheeky" bids after Tottenham also held talks in January but to no avail.

Chelsea are said to be under "major pressure" to sell players before 30 June, after their 2022-23 accounts shared that they made losses of around £90.1million last year. You therefore cannot rule out Gallagher's potential sale, and Spurs could well benefit.

Quetta Gladiators ousted despite Shane Watson, Khurram Manzoor fifties

In the absence of a number of key players, including regular captain Imad Wasim, Karachi went down by five wickets

The Report by Deivarayan Muthu15-Mar-2020

Shane Watson acknowledges his half-century•PCB/PSL

How the game played out
Shane Watson and Khurram Manzoor punched fifties in an 118-run partnership off a mere 65 balls – Quetta Gladiators’ highest stand this season – but it wasn’t enough for them to sneak into the semi-finals. Believe it or not, they needed 151 in 3.2 overs to displace Peshawar Zalmi from the fourth spot. In the end, they chased down the target in 16.2 overs to exit the tournament with only crumbs of comfort.Karachi Kings, who had sealed their semi-finals berth on Saturday, had rested a number of key players, including regular captain Imad Wasim. Umad Asif, Chris Jordan, and Mohammad Amir also were handed breaks and the fringe players sprayed the ball around, but Karachi will be buoyed by Cameron Delport’s return to form. The South African was on 18 off 21 balls at one point, but he finished with 62 off 44 balls – his first half-century of PSL 2020.Hello again, Naseem
Returning to the scene of his memorable spell against Sri Lanka in the longest format, after recovering from an ankle sprain, the 17-year old struck with his second ball. He cranked it up to 145.5kph and hit the off stump of Sharjeel Khan for a duck. He also zipped a few back-of-a-length deliveries across stand-in captain Babar Azam, as did Sohail Khan.Sohail was rewarded when Iftikhar Ahmed holed out to midwicket as Karachi dawdled to 36 for 2 in the powerplay.Delport and Walton tee off
Azam may be the No.1 T20I batsman, but even he couldn’t get the Quetta bowlers away. After eating up 15 dots, he sliced Australian legspinner Fawad Ahmed to long-off for a 32-ball 34. However, after a scratchy start, Delport found his groove and showed his range. He was particularly severe on Ahmed, taking 22 off 16 balls from him. But the most stunning shot came off seamer Sohail. Delport picked a slower legcutter from off stump and reverse-swatted it away behind point for four. Chadwick Walton also played a fine hand, scoring 26 off 20 balls.Their late blows were central to Karachi touching 150.The hare and the tortoise
Left-arm seamer Waqas Maqsood had Ahmed Shehzad nicking off second ball of the chase, but Manzoor, playing his first match of the tournament, unleashed a flurry of boundaries in the powerplay. All up, he claimed eight of the 11 boundaries Quetta had struck in the first six overs.Watson then laid into Arshad Iqbal, creaming him for two sixes and a four in the four in the ninth over, and nearly outscored Manzoor during their stand. In the next over, both batsmen got to the fifties. During the process, Watson became the top six-hitter in the history of the PSL. Then, from 118 for 1, Quetta slid to 139 for 5, but Azam Khan and Mohammad Nawaz hauled them home.Where the teams stand
Karachi will face Lahore Qalandars in the second semi-final in Lahore on Tuesday while Quetta will go back wondering what might have been had they got their act together much earlier.

Arsenal in talks to sign £145m winger who's more exciting than Rodrygo

da betway: And with that, the Premier League is done and dusted for another year. Arsenal, the division’s second place side, ended things with a win but the real work starts now for new sporting director Andrea Berta.

da cassino online: Mikel Arteta declared post-game on Sunday that work for the new season would commence quickly.

Where do they need to strengthen?

It’s pretty obvious unless you have been living under a rock.

For the first time since the 1923/24 season, yes, over 100 years ago, Arsenal failed to find a player who scored double figures in a league season.

Injuries have no doubt led to this but so has the club’s poor recruitment over the last 18 months.

A new striker and potentially also a winger simply has to be sourced this summer.

Arsenal’s transfer plans post-season

It’s set to be out with the old and in with the new this summer for the Gunners.

Kieran Tierney scored on his final outing for the Gunners at Southampton but it may not have been just his final outing.

Indeed, Raheem Sterling will head back to his parent club while Thomas Partey and Jorginho see their contracts expire in a few weeks time.

Leandro Trossard – linked with Saudi last January – could sign a new deal at the Emirates Stadium this summer, but that is unlikely to have an impact on whether or not they sign a new forward.

For that central berth, the likes of Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko seem the most likely of candidates but there’s also the potential for a new winger to arrive in the shape of Real Madrid star, Rodrygo.

The Brazilian isn’t the only wide player on their shortlist with reports in recent weeks suggesting that Arsenal have been working on a deal for Rafael Leao.

The Milan star is also wanted by Bayern Munich this summer but there’s has been a new development in Arsenal’s chase.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

That’s according to French publication, Foot Mercato, who suggested over the weekend that while the Portuguese winger is on the club’s ‘shortlist’, Berta actually had a phone call with the player in the last two weeks.

The purpose of that call was to tell Leao that there is definite interest in him from the Gunners.

Arsenal don’t have an endless supply of cash this summer, and with other areas needing to be improved, they will have to spend wisely. Thus, a reported £145m release clause is unlikely to be met too well by the club’s recruitment team.

How Rafael Leao compares to Rodrygo

Speaking last week ahead of the game with Southampton, Arteta was actually asked about the prospect of signing Rodrygo from Real Madrid.

While he didn’t explicitly reveal that Arsenal were interested, he was slightly more open to the prospect of discussing transfers than he was a week or two ago, stating: “If you want to win titles, you have to be the best in the market. The teams that win have the best players.”

Well, speaking of the best players, who would be the better option here?

AC Milan's RafaelLeaoreacts

Rodrygo is an electrifying talent and there is a belief that if he moved away from the Bernabeu and was the main man, he’d be a genuinely scary proposition. After all, this is a player who has scored 50 goals since the beginning of the 2022/23 season.

In comparison, Leao – who’s actually been compared to a young Thierry Henry for his play style on the left flank – has scored 43 times in the same time frame.

So, with fewer goals, why is the Portuguese more exciting?

A genuine speedster, the Milan forward has notably been described by the Athletic’s Alex Barker as “one of the best dribblers in the world”, the numbers certainly showcase that.

He ranks within the top 5% of wingers in Europe’s top five leagues this season for successful take ons per 90 minutes with 2.84. In contrast, Rodrygo only ranks among the best 23% with 2.08 per 90 mins in 2024/25.

Evidently both very capable dribblers, over the last three seasons it’s the Milan superstar who comes out on top in most areas, most importantly producing more end product (goals and assists) every 90 minutes.

Leao isn’t just a dribbler and a goalscorer, but he’s also capable of providing assists, delivering more key passes and progressive passes than Madrid’s wing sensation.

AC Milan's RafaelLeaocelebrates scoring their first goal

It’s likely the latter would be a cheaper acquisition but based on the numbers it’s the Portugal international who looks like the more exciting talent.

Combine that with comparisons to Henry and you have a genuine world beater here capable of getting Arsenal fans off their seats again.

It’s safe to say they’ve lacked that star quality and X factor on too many occasions this season.

Arsenal struck gold on "unplayable" star worth way more than Nico Williams

Dushmantha Chameera will miss Sri Lanka’s second ODI against Afghanistan, with Asitha Fernando drafted into the squad as his replacement.Chameera had limped off midway through his eighth over during Sri Lanka’s 42-run victory in the first ODI. He had picked up two wickets at the time but could not continue after that. It has now been confirmed that he injured his left quadriceps. It is understood the injury is not related to any of his previous injuries; last year he had missed a chunk of Sri Lanka’s games with a torn pectoral muscle, and prior to that he had undergone surgery for an ankle injury. The extent of the current injury is unknown. The 32-year-old fast bowler underwent a scan following Friday’s game, the results of which have been sent to a specialist in the UK for consultation.”He’s feeling better now, but we won’t know for sure the exact nature of his injury until we hear back from the specialist,” Sri Lanka’s team manager Mahinda Halangoda told ESPNcricinfo.Fernando, his replacement in the squad, last played an ODI in November 2022, also against Afghanistan. He has played five ODIs in all, picking up the solitary wicket. However, he has impressed in Tests, most recently against Afghanistan when he picked up six wickets in the match to help Sri Lanka on their way to victory.
