Trio of half-centuries turn ongoing chase of 378 in hosts’ direction, much to the joy of the Edgbaston crowd
Sidharth Monga04-Jul-20222:13
Could India have done anything to stop England?
England’s dream run in fourth-innings chases this summer continued as they got to 259 for 3 in pursuit of 378, a record chase for them if it comes off. Alex Lees and Zak Crawley put together their quickest hundred-run opening stand in Test cricket before Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow repaired a collapse of three wickets for two runs. However, to have that half chance at the target England needed the bowlers to do their job, which they did by taking India’s seven standing wickets for an addition of 120 runs to the overnight lead of 257 runs. When England bowled in the first half of the way, they extracted uneven bounce from the pitch, and Jack Leach found enough assistance to have an analysis of 12-1-28-1, the wicket being the dangerous Rishabh Pant, who became the first India wicketkeeper to score a hundred and a fifty in an overseas Test. The ball didn’t do much for India at the start; when they got the ball changed in the 21st over, it brought them three wickets. Root and Bairstow had to be watchful against the reversing ball for a bit, but they still managed to add 150 unbeaten runs at 4.56 an over.England began the day with James Anderson and Root, perhaps because the latter had got Pant in the first innings, but it looked like the start of a flat spell for England. The first seven overs brought India 27 runs without playing a shot in anger, but Stuart Broad brought them the luck they badly needed. Cheteshwar Pujara, on 50 overnight, cut a short and wide ball straight to backward point to be dismissed for 66.This opening paved the way for a hostile spell from Matthew Potts, who peppered Shreyas Iyer with the short ball before having him caught at square midwicket. Immediately Ben Stokes brought on Jack Leach, who has been cannon fodder for Pant in Test cricket. Pant swept him for four first ball. When Leach began his next over, he had conceded 151 runs to Pant in 97 balls in Test cricket. Off the second ball of the over, Pant tried a revere-sweep to counter his wide defensive lines, but ended up tickling it to slip to be out for 57.India led by 330 at this moment with four wickets in hand. All through the series, India’s lower order has been the thorn in England’s side, but on this one final occasion they let England shut the game down.Ravindra Jadeja kept farming the strike without taking any risks on the first three balls of the over, which India possibly did to give the pitch the best chance to wear down. This also gave England the chance to have attacking fields for the other batters whenever they got strike. Potts had Shardul Thakur caught at long leg with a top edge on the hook, and Stokes continued the short-ball barrage. It was a brave call because the short ball had worked to their detriment at Lord’s and in the second innings here. And, for once, it worked as Stokes ended the innings with a reversing length ball to get Jadeja to play on before taking Bumrah out with another bouncer.Alex Lees and Zak Crawley put on 100 runs in only 19.5 overs•Getty Images
England have scored 279 for 5, 299 for 5 and 296 for 3 to win their last three Tests batting last, but this was 378, on an uneven pitch, against a team that had its full first-choice attack. England also had openers who, at least on the outside, looked not certain of their position. What a day they chose to come good. The positive intent was on show right away. Lees charged at Mohammed Shami the second ball he bowled and got four through midwicket. When India tried Jadeja early, he drilled the first ball of his first over for four through mid-off, reverse-swept for four the last ball of that over, and slog-swept for four the first ball of the next over. Crawley showed much better judgement outside off, making the bowlers bowl at the stumps, and showed how good he is off the pads or down the ground when they did. They were not batting like batters with Test averages of 25 and 27 nor would it have looked like they were chasing 378 if you had just walked in without knowing the score. The field spread, and the funky shots stopped. Lees kept rotating the strike, and Crawley began improving his strike-rate as he started to get drive balls. India’s coach Rahul Dravid was seen chatting to the match referee David Boon, possibly seeking clarification on why the ball was not getting changed for them. As he chatted, he must have seen Crawley drive Thakur through extra cover for four to take England to 80 in just the 17th over.India finally got the ball changed in the 21st over by which time Lees had brought up his fifty, the first at more than a run a ball for a regular England opener since 2011, and the two had added 106. With the replaced ball, Bumrah brought himself back and produced immediate results. Crawley left outside off as he had been doing, but this ball moved back in late to knock the off bail over.Ollie Pope fell to the first ball after tea, poking at a shortish one outside off, which held its line. The first ball of the next over brought Lees’ wicket, who was caught ball-watching when an inside edge from him had gone behind square. Losing three wickets in the space of three runs, against a ball that was now talking, England needed to stem the tide.Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow put on an unbroken 150-run stand•Getty Images
Root and Bairstow did that and more, but batted positively while doing so. The first bit was difficult for Bairstow with the ball now reversing. He kept fumbling for the ball, aware of his traditional weakness against the one that comes in, but it was when the bowlers switched the shine that he got in trouble. He was 14 when he drove hard at what turned out to be an outswinger, but Hanuma Vihari, for some reason fielding at second slip in place of Shubman Gill or Iyer, dropped him. He was 39 when Pant dived full length to his left but couldn’t collect a tickle down the leg side.Apart from those two chances, Root and Bairstow batted without much bother. Root tried a couple of reverse-sweeps off Jadeja, who bowled over the wicket for the majority of the day, but remained fairly classic in his brisk run-scoring for the rest of the innings. Bairstow, who had scored many of his boundaries by going over the infield in the first innings, appreciated the in-and-out fields and the only shot he played in the air was the pull off Siraj for a flat six.The innings so far could be divided in three neat phases: the first 20.5 overs for 106 runs and no wicket, the next 15.1 overs when the ball moved and brought India three wickets for 35 runs, and 118 runs in the next 21 overs when the ball went soft. In all India conceded 134 runs in boundaries, the second-most they have given away in the first 57 overs of a fourth innings. The day began with high probability of souring a memorable summer of chases for England, but it ended as a reminder that this could be India’s third straight away defeat despite setting decent targets.

He’s in excellent form for his club.
ByEmilio Galantini Nov 14, 2024
The two most likely players to depart Enzo Maresca’s side, as per reports in the last few weeks, are left-back Ben Chilwell and midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka – who have both been deemed surplus to requirements by the Italian.
Chilwell and Chukwuemeka have both played under an hour in total across all competitions, with Chelsea ready to cut their losses on the pair as January looms.

Chelsea are encouraging teams to move for Chilwell, who is attracting interest from the Premier League, La Liga and Serie A, while reliable journalist Simon Phillips reported this week that Ipswich Town have made an enquiry over signing Chukwuemeka in January.
“Ipswich Town are showing a keen interest in signing Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka,” wrote Phillips.
“In fact, we have heard that they have already made an enquiry about the player’s availability for January. Chukwuemeka wants to play football, so he will listen to any approaches now. He had approaches in the summer but ideally wanted to stay in England, and again, ideally in London.
Carney Chukwuemeka
“AC Milan and Barcelona have also both expressed an interest in the Blues midfielder. Chelsea will sell him for the right price, and they might even consider a loan to buy deal in January that will see the player leave in the summer.
“Sources are unsure at this point the nature of the enquiry from Ipswich, whether it is a loan or a permanent approach, because it is just an initial enquiry to see if the player is available in January, which he will be. But I’d suspect it would be some sort of loan to buy deal for now. Chelsea will listen.”
Other players linked with the exit door including Christopher Nkunku. The Frenchman is attracting rumoured interest from Man United, and it is believed Nkunku is tempted by the possibility of making an Old Trafford move (Football Insider).
Palace approach Chelsea over signing Mykhailo Mudryk
Despite his use in cup competitions and some impressive showings as of late, reports continue to link Mykhailo Mudryk with a January exit as well.
The Ukranian, signed for an initial £62 million, has failed to justify that price tag so far and faces stiff competition for a consistent place in Chelsea’s attacking line-up.
Football Transfers write Palace have approached Chelsea over signing Mudryk on loan in the winter, which could be a potentially “transformative deal” for Glasner’s side as they look to climb up the Premier League table.
The 23-year-old dazzled at Shakhtar Donetsk before making the switch to Stamford Bridge, and has displayed his ability on the odd occasion, but BlueCo will be very keen for him to kick on and perhaps a temporary move elsewhere could be best for him.
Sussex show fight in reply but face a long haul to reach first-innings parity

Chris Cooke celebrates his century•Getty Images
Chris Cooke and Shubman Gill both made impressive hundreds as Glamorgan put themselves into a strong position in their must-win game against Sussex.Gill scored 119 – his first LV= County Championship hundred – and Cooke 141 as they piled up 533 for eight declared on the second day at the 1st Central County Ground.Sussex responded positively and were 86 for one when bad light forced the players off with 13 overs still to be bowled at Hove after there had been two short rain delays earlier in the day.Glamorgan need to win to have any chance of overhauling Middlesex and claiming the second promotion place from Division Two and although Sussex bowled well in the morning session when they took three wickets, their bowlers suffered thereafter with Cooke leading the charge as he made his tenth first-class century.Earlier it had been Gill who went on the offensive. He quickly added the nine runs he’d needed overnight to lodge his seventh first-class hundred before greeting Jack Carson’s arrival by hitting the off-spinner for three boundaries in his first over. But Carson had his revenge in his next over when he tossed another one up and Gill picked out long-on, having faced 139 balls and hit 16 fours and two sixes.Left-armer Sean Hunt had already broken through when he yorked Billy Root and Carson picked up a second wicket when he gave the ball air again and Andrew Salter was also caught at long-on.When Sussex took the new ball Brad Currie soon had James Harris caught behind for 34, after Harris had added 77 with Cooke. Timm van der Gugten helped the South African put on 41 for the eighth wicket before van der Gugten was held at long leg off Tom Clark.Acceleration came either side of tea as Cooke and Ajaz Patel thrashed 96 in 13 overs with Patel hitting an undefeated 51 from 37 balls including three sixes, two of them hit over long-on in an over from Carson.Cooke hardly played a false shot before edging Hunt to wicketkeeper Oli Carter after making his second Championship century of the season. His 141 came off 165 balls with 14 fours and two sixes. Carter was one of two substitutes employed by Sussex after Charlie Tear and Fynn Hudson-Prentice went down with food poisoning overnight. The Glamorgan total was also swelled by 50 extras.Sussex began their reply needing 384 to avoid the follow-on and they made a positive start, Ali Orr and Tom Haines laying into some wayward new-ball bowling from Harris and Mick Hogan. They added 69 in 11.2 overs before Hogan’s nip-backer struck Orr on the back leg and he was lbw for 45. Haines and Tom Alsop saw their side through to the close but Glamorgan will still feel they can claim their first Championship win at Hove since 1975, even though the pitch shows little sign of deterioration.

da bet sport: Glasgow Rangers head into the international break having secured all three points at Ibrox in their Premiership clash against Hearts, but it was far from pretty.
da winzada777: Cyriel Dessers netted for the third game in a row, opening the scoring after just six minutes with a close-range finish. That was as good as it would get for Rangers, as their performance levels dropped as the game went on.
It was yet another turgid and lethargic display which has been common this term under Philippe Clement and the international break has come at the right time for him and his team.
It is evident that several players in blue need a break due to their recent exertions in Europe and domestically. James Tavernier is one name that stands out, as his performances for the Ibrox side this season have been way below the level expected.
James Tavernier's stats for Rangers this season
Last season, the defender registered a staggering 36 goal contributions – 24 goals and 12 assists – in all competitions, becoming the Gers’ leading scorer.
Over the previous few campaigns, Tavernier’s success in the final third has been exceptional.
His numbers from right-back won’t ever be replicated and, while question marks naturally appear given the lack of success the club has achieved since 2016, the Englishman has led the team to a Europa League final in that time.
Adding in the Scottish Cup and League Cup triumphs along with the unforgettable 2020/21 unbeaten league title win, Tavernier played his part.
Has this season been a year too far for the player, however? Especially as it looked like he might have been on the move during the summer.
Indeed, Steven Gerrard was reportedly keen on signing him for Al-Ettifaq in Saudi, which would have seen the former Ibrox boss reunite with Tavernier, but no move materialised.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst – another former Gers manager – also showed keen interest in securing his signature for Besiktas. Again, no concrete bid was made by the Turkish side and the captain began the season fully committed to the Light Blues.
Perhaps Clement should have made a better effort to move him on, as his form has dipped dramatically since last term.

In 19 games for the club in all competitions, Tavernier has scored just once – a penalty against Dundee – while grabbing a further three assists. Hardly the numbers the Light Blues have been used to with the captain.
The defender hasn’t been at his finest defensively either. In the top flight, he has lost possession on average 20 times per game, while being dribbled past 0.5 times per match.
Taking statistics out of the equation, Tavernier’s intensity has been lacking, showing little fight to win the ball back when he loses it. Could it be time for a change of leadership in the near future?
Clement may already have an ideal candidate right in front of him. Someone who has shown a resurgence of late under the Belgian…
Raskin's performance in numbers vs Hearts
Nico Raskin has started the previous five matches for the Gers, partnering Connor Barron in the heart of the midfield to good effect.
Against Hearts, Clement opted to use Raskin and Barron at the base of his midfield, deploying Mohamed Diomande in a more advanced role, which certainly suits his attributes.
During the match, Raskin took 87 touches, completed 85% of his passes, made six tackles and won an impressive eight of 11 ground duels, displaying his tenacity in the centre of the pitch.
He was even given a rating of 8/10 by Glasgow World for his display and with every passing match, Raskin’s confidence is building.
After suffering an injury in pre-season, it looked as though the Belgian would struggle to make inroads into the team, especially as a Barron/Diomande duo was forming in the middle of the pitch.
Rangers midfielder Nicolas Raskin
These recent displays prove just how effective the 23-year-old can be if given a chance in the starting XI.
Could he emerge as a candidate to take over the captaincy when Tavernier does finally depart Ibrox?
Chalkboard
Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.
Rangers' future captain
Michael Beale signed the midfielder in the 2023 January transfer window, even reportedly beating off Barcelona to secure his signature.
He then missed only three games for the Gers during the second half of the 2022/23 campaign, which allowed him to settle in well ahead of his first full campaign at the club.
The youngster endeared himself to several of the senior professionals at the club, with Scott Arfield showering him with praise.
Not a bad endorsement for the future captaincy, yet Raskin struggled last term. An injury meant he missed 19 games. Even when he was fit, Clement tended to keep him on the bench as it appeared he wasn’t a big fan of the former Standard Liege starlet.
Former Standard Liege ace Nicolas Raskin.
Another injury suffered before the start of the season threatened to derail his spell in Glasgow before it had even begun, but he has shown incredible resilience to emerge as a vital member of the squad.
In the Premiership, Raskin has won 6.6 total duels per game – a success rate of 66% – while making 3.3 tackles and recovering the ball four times per game, showcasing his ability to win the ball back in the heart of the midfield and his strength in one on one battles.
Rangers may not be at their best, but this midfield triumvirate of Barron/Raskin/Diomande has given Clement a strong core to the starting XI, that’s for sure.
Tavernier won’t be at the Light Blues for much longer. Could Raskin be a viable contender for the captaincy role when it becomes available? Only time will tell.
The Rangers star who was just as good as Raskin vs Hearts
The Glasgow Rangers midfielder caught the eye with an impressive performance.
da jogodeouro: As Liverpool begin to think about replacing Mohamed Salah, whose contract is still on course to expire next summer, club chief Michael Edwards has reportedly sent scouts to watch a potential successor in action.
Liverpool transfer news
da roleta: The Reds have so far proved that they didn’t need to spend in abundance in the summer transfer window and instead trust the majority of the squad that Jurgen Klopp built.
The likes of Ryan Gravenberch and Cody Gakpo have particularly thrived as a result, after Arne Slot welcomed just two fresh faces in the form of Federico Chiesa – who remains sidelined through injury – and Giorgi Mamardashvili, who continues to impress back on loan at Valencia.
However, a repeat of that transfer tactic looks unlikely in 2025, with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Salah all heading for the exit door as free agents as things stand. In what would be the ultimate blow, Liverpool are seemingly already preparing to find replacements should they need them next summer.
Mohamed Salah scores for Liverpool
According to Sky Sports’ Lyall Thomas, Edwards has sent scouts to watch Antoine Semenyo as Liverpool continue to plot their move to sign the Bournemouth winger. Impressing on the south coast, the winger has also attracted the interest of Newcastle United in what could signal a tense battle between two top Premier League sides.
5 potential replacements for Mohamed Salah at Liverpool
Mohamed Salah has been linked with a move away from Liverpool, but who could be in line to succeed him at Anfield?
ByBarney Lane Oct 19, 2024
The Reds will hope that Richard Hughes can put his Bournemouth links to good use, having left the Cherries to become Liverpool’s new sporting director last summer. A man who’s seen Semenyo’s star quality first-hand, Hughes’ influence will be more important than ever if those at Anfield go in pursuit of the 24-year-old.
"Powerful" Semenyo is one to watch
If Liverpool need to replace Salah in the summer, whoever is given the task will have an impossible mission on their hands. They will be replacing a Liverpool legend – arguably their greatest in Premier League history – and one of the best wingers to grace English football.
On that front, Semenyo is certainly an interesting option. Although he is not a player who steals the same headlines as Europe’s best, Liverpool have benefited from buying from the Premier League’s bottom half in the past, with Georginio Wijnaldum a prime example of that.
With four goal involvements so far this season, Semenyo has earned the praise of Bournemouth teammate Lewis Cook, who said (via BBC Sport): “As a team, we knew the quality he has and we saw that last year. He’s got to just keep working hard – being aggressive and being clinical.
“He’s got a lot better at running back and helping out the team, too. He’s a powerful lad and has all the ability in the world. Hopefully, he can continue to show that.”
As Salah’s contract continues to tick down while Semenyo impresses at Bournemouth, both players’ situations will be ones to watch in 2025.

Chelsea have already held talks with numerous clubs over Chilwell, according to reliable journalist Simon Phillips, while it is also believed that midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka is being made available for sale as well.
There are some reports that Barcelona and Inter Milan are interested in Enzo Fernandez, alongside fellow European heavyweights Real Madrid in this regard, and the Argentine World Cup winner faces an uncertain future at Chelsea.
The £107 million signing has lost his place alongside Moises Caicedo in midfield to Roméo Lavia, but Maresca is adamant that this is purely tactical. “At this moment Enzo is not playing but there is no problem with Enzo,” said Maresca on Fernandez’s future at Cobham.
“The noise about Enzo is because clubs pay so much money for them, people expect they will always be the best. That is not so. The only reason he is not playing is just because the physicality I prefer is from (Moises) Caicedo and Romeo Lavia.”
While his long-term suitability remains unclear, when considering he most likely won’t be satisfied with a bit-part role, fellow Chelsea midfielder Cesare Casadei has struggled for game time in recent months.
He played fairly regularly in cup competitions earlier this season, but the Italian appears on Chelsea’s fringes, with reports suggesting that Casadei attracting interest from AC Milan ahead of the window’s re-opening.
Juventus resume the "thread of talks" to sign Casadei from Chelsea
As per Tuttojuve, Juventus have joined the Serie A transfer race for Casadei, who they view as a golden opportunity to strengthen their midfield.
Cesare Casadei
Chelsea could sell the former Leicester City loanee for a “bargain price”, and it is believed Juve have “resumed the thread of the talks” Casadei as a result.
While they’re pretty keen on the 21-year-old, Thiago Motta’s side may only be able to strike a deal if they manage to offload midfielder Nicolo Fagioli to make room.
However, he is believed to have many suitors in Europe, so this could be a serious possibility. Casadei would act as a direct replacement for Fagioli, but Chelsea would first have to agree to sell a “diamond” in their ranks who Inter Under-18s coach Andrea Zanchetta said has “crazy potential”.
