Aston Villa in talks with £25m PSG player now willing to complete move

Potentially welcoming more star power, Aston Villa have reportedly opened talks with a Paris Saint-Germain player who desperately needs to rediscover his most scintillating form.

Aston Villa transfer news

The Villans currently sit ninth in the Premier League as they prepare to commence a new year under Unai Emery and one that they will once again hope to end in the Champions League. Given their current struggle for consistency, however, they may well need to return to the transfer market if they want to make a return to Europe’s biggest stage for a second season running.

On that front, it’s Donyell Malen who has been threatening to steal the headlines more than others. Reports have even gone as far to suggest that Aston Villa have already sent an offer Borussia Dortmund’s way with negotiations ongoing and the German giants ready to show their winger the door in 2025.

Borussia Dortmund's Donyell Malen celebrates

It seems as though attacking reinforcements have become the priority at Villa Park this month in an attempt to share the goals around rather than relying on Ollie Watkins and Jhon Duran to seal the points. And that means Malen isn’t the only one to have seemingly caught the Villans’ eye.

According to Caught Offside, Aston Villa are now in talks with Marco Asensio over a January move away from Paris Saint-Germain. The former Real Madrid star has struggled for game time in the current campaign and is now willing to complete a departure away from the Ligue 1 giants this month.

Emery could sign "incredible" £41m Pau Torres upgrade for Aston Villa

ByKelan Sarson Jan 2, 2025

Whilst Aston Villa would prefer a loan move, PSG are reportedly looking for between €25m-€30m (£21m-£25m) to part ways with their midfielder at the halfway mark.

With the likes of Morgan Rogers, Ross Barkley and the returning Emiliano Buendia already providing enough depth in Asensio’s role, it remains to be seen whether they’ll be willing to splash out to secure the Spaniard’s signature.

"Great" Asensio needs January move

In danger of becoming a forgotten star after rising to stardom at Real Madrid and earning a move to PSG, Asensio should be desperate to steal the headlines once again and complete a January switch to Aston Villa. Only rare cases have struggled to impress Emery and only few have not gone on to make an impressive impact at Villa Park. Now, Asensio could become the next to benefit.

Despite his current struggles under Luis Enrique, the right-winger did once find himself at the centre of the manager’s praise during his time in charge of Spain’s national team.

Enrique told reporters, via Madrid Universal, in 2022: “We’ve worked with him on the things we wanted him to improve and he has done just that. When he plays as a ‘9’ he initiates the pressure and that requires effort and great responsibility.

“It’s a pleasure to see how our six forwards press, they give us guarantees. Marco is a guarantee and he’s in great form for the World Cup.”

Enduring three starts in Ligue 1 under the Spaniard at PSG just three years later, Asensio is no longer a player at the centre of Enrique’s thoughts and must move on in 2025.

Bad light and rain ends day with Australia two down

Labuschagne and Khawaja hit half-centuries on a truncated day before Nortje helped SA claw back

Tristan Lavalette03-Jan-2023Stumps Marnus Labuschagne and Usman Khawaja hit half-centuries for Australia on a truncated day one before Anrich Nortje helped South Africa claw back into the third Test at a gloomy SCG.After captain Pat Cummins won a crucial toss and elected to bat on a dry surface, Australia reached stumps at 147 for 2 with Khawaja unbeaten on 54 and Steven Smith yet to face a delivery.Labuschagne fell for 79 on what turned out to be the final delivery of the day’s play. Only 47 overs were bowled due to bad light and rain much to the disappointment of the 31,000 crowd in another Sydney Test match affected by inclement conditions.Labuschagne and Khawaja had built a strong platform with a 135-run partnership after the early loss of opener David Warner for 10. There was a delay of more than two hours due to bad light before five overs were squeezed in late in the day and Nortje capitalised with a cracking delivery to remove Labuschagne.Exerting plenty of energy, Nortje conjured sharp bounce and pace on the slow surface to produce an unplayable delivery that had Labuschagne caught behind. After a lionhearted effort in Melbourne, Nortje was again the standout with 2 for 26 from 11 overs having earlier taken the wicket of Warner. He has kept a struggling South Africa buoyant after Australia threatened to grab an early stranglehold of the contest.Labuschagne had been irrepressible until on 70 he appeared to be dismissed out of nowhere when he edged seamer Marco Jansen to first slip where Simon Harmer claimed a low catch. It was given out on the soft signal but Labuschagne stood his ground and it seemed difficult to prove from replays whether Harmer had his hands under the ball close to the turf.Third umpire Richard Kettleborough overturned the decision much to the frustration of South Africa. It only furthered Labuschagne’s reputation as a rather charmed batter but he had played imperiously before that contentious incident with five boundaries in 12 balls to go from 40 to 61.After bowling well before lunch, Harmer trapped Khawaja lbw with the second delivery of the second session only for the decision to be reversed when replays showed the ball hit the glove first.Having revived his career a year ago with twin centuries against England on this ground, Khawaja passed 4000 career Test runs en route to a half-century.Usman Khawaja drives through the covers•Cricket Australia via Getty ImagesUnder-pressure South Africa captain Dean Elgar once again made questionable decisions, including under-utilising Harmer who bowled just five overs even though his off-spin particularly threatened left-handed Khawaja.Elgar, however, backed underperforming left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj who bowled nine overs for 35 runs with Labuschagne and Khawaja sweeping effectively against him.Maharaj has now bowled 52.5 overs without reward in this series. While Nortje toiled, spearhead Kagiso Rabada continued his underwhelming series to finish with 0 for 45 off 12 overs. He unsuccessfully reverted to bowling short against Labuschagne, who counterattacked with ease.Ashton Agar, Josh Hazlewood and Matt Renshaw were named in an Australia team attempting a clean sweep of the series and a spot in the World Test Championship final in June. There was drama when Renshaw, playing his first Test since 2018, tested positive for Covid-19 on a rapid antigen test after feeling unwell before the day’s play, but he will continue to play in the match. With the SCG surface set to play more traditionally, Australia named two frontline spinners at home for the first time in six years with left-arm spinner Agar making his return having not played Tests since 2017.Regular quick Hazlewood returned from a side strain having edged out Scott Boland and uncapped tearaway Lance Morris.Along with Harmer, who replaced Lungi Ngidi, South Africa named batter Heinrich Klaasen in place of Theunis de Bruyn who returned home for the birth of his first child.South Africa still have a slim chance at qualifying for the WTC final with a consolation victory as their spirit lifted after Njorte’s late heroics.

Tottenham set to open imminent talks to sign best in his league £8m talent

Tottenham are now set to hold talks over signing a new goalkeeper for Ange Postecoglou, with their target considered the best in the division, a new report has claimed.

Tottenham back on track

Tottenham’s up and down Premier League campaign continued as they thrashed Southampton 5-0, a result that ultimately saw Saints boss Russell Martin lose his job at St Mary’s. Postecoglou’s side were ahead inside a minute through James Maddison in what turned into a first half rout for the Lilywhites.

They scored three inside 14 minutes before taking a 5-0 lead into half time, allowing them to coast through the second half as boos rang around St Mary’s.

“It was outstanding by the players”, Postecoglou said after the game. “We had a tough European game away on Thursday night. We had 10 first-team players unavailable tonight and for the lads to come out with that much energy. We had to come out quickly because we knew we were going to get tired. We are asking a lot of our layers and the quality and energy showed was outstanding.”

There are still concerns in north London about Postecoglou’s lack of pragmatism in some games, something which means that despite having scored the second most goals in the Premier League they still sit in 10th place. But now, attention is turning towards the transfer market.

Tottenham ready talks for new goalkeeper

That is according to CaughtOffside, who report that Spurs are now ready to open talks to sign Botafogo goalkeeper John Victor in a permanent deal.

Tottenham are on the lookout for a new no.2 goalkeeper, with Fraser Forster out of contract at the end of the current campaign and neither Brandon Austin nor Alfie Whiteman having yet made the step up to senior football with any success.

ByCharlie Smith Dec 16, 2024

And according to the report they are eyeing a move to sign Victor, who kept a league high seven clean sheets in the Brazilian Serie A in the most recent campaign, while he also topped the goalkeeper charts in several other stats too.

It is claimed that the 28-year-old will be available for “around €9-10million” (£7m-£8m), and that Spurs are “expected to hold talks” imminently, alongside fellow Premier League giants Manchester United.

Any deal to sign the Botafogo man would likely be one that takes place in the summer however, with Ange Postecoglou already having seemingly ruled out adding another goalkeeper to his ranks despite the injury to Vicario.

“That’s not going to happen [sign a free agent]. That’s why we’ve got a squad of players here. I don’t think us signing a free agent now is going to help us,” he explained last month. “We’re happy with what we’ve got.”

But with Forster set to leave in a matter of months, Victor could be the man asked to step into the vacancy.

Chelsea want to sign £115m star who could make Palmer even more unplayable

Since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital bought Chelsea, they have invested heavily in the striker department, looking to find a consistent 15+ goal forward.

The Blues have signed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, David Datro Fofana, Nicolas Jackson, Deivid Washington, Christopher Nkunku, João Félix, and Marc Guiu, all players who can play as a centre forward, and all players signed since the new ownership came in.

The best of the bunch turned out to be Jackson, who has netted 24 goals in 57 games since joining the club, also providing nine assists in that time. The former Villarreal ace has formed a lovely partnership with Cole Palmer, who is another investment exceeding all expectations of when he was signed in 2023.

Cole Palmer's incredible numbers at Chelsea

Palmer joined the club from Manchester City in 2023, for a fee of around £40m plus £2.5m add-ons. Since joining the Blues, the Englishman has made 59 appearances, scoring 32 goals and providing 20 assists in 4,708 minutes, being named Chelsea POTY for the 2023/24 season.

Despite playing a mixture of right-wing and attacking midfield last season, Enzo Maresca has looked to fully unleash Palmer centrally, allowing him to float in the pockets, drop deeper to receive the ball, and be involved in all phases.

So far this term, the 22-year-old has made 14 appearances in all competitions, scoring seven goals and providing five assists in his 1,095 minutes played.

But, there is one signing Chelsea could make to get that little bit more out of their superstar, by forming a dynamic that allows him to further utilise his skillset.

The Chelsea target Cole Palmer will love

According to reports from CaughtOffside, Chelsea are keen on bringing Newcastle striker, Alexander Isak to Stamford Bridge. However, they will face competition from Arsenal, as the sides will look to get the deal done for a fee in the region of £80m, a lower fee than the Magpies’ current £115m asking price.

Kieran Trippier – Isak’s Newcastle teammate – has described Isak as “unbelievable”, and the Swedish striker has certainly been that on Tyneside.

He has made 79 appearances for the Magpies since joining the club, scoring 40 times, supplying seven assists and totalling 5,661 minutes played. So, why would the Toon sensation benefit Palmer and how does he compare to Jackson?

It’s evident that Isak and Jackson have similar playing styles. They look to be involved in the buildup, help their teams progress play via their passing and carrying qualities, have the ability to be an outlet by running the channels, and are capable of getting shots off.

Jackson ranks ahead of Isak in creative metrics, making more key passes and averaging more shot-creating actions per 90, showing his ability to supply for his teammates, as well as himself. This is also proven by the assists per 90 numbers, where the Senegal international is averaging more than Newcastle’s no.14 in this department.

The impressive Swede does possess more natural box threat though, standing at 6 foot 4, averaging more penalty area touches per 90 (5.89), and more aerial duels won (1.05), both key traits Chelsea are looking to add to the squad.

Thus, by adding more aerial presence in the box, it would allow creators such as Palmer to thrive.

Chelsea star Cole Palmer

Indeed, Isak’s arrival would give the former Man City ace the potential to fully utilise his excellent passing quality, finding clever crosses into the box, and having the ability to mix it up in their play, making Chelsea more unpredictable in their attacking movements.

Palmer has been an excellent goal scorer but this signing could be one that takes him to the next level in the way of assists too.

Arsenal man started over £67m-rated ace for his country and ran the show

Still over a week until Arsenal can hurl themselves back toward the ascendency in the Premier League. The international break has taken centre stage, and the best that fans across the world can do is watch various Gunners perform for their countries.

Not all within Mikel Arteta’s squad have jetted off to compete for their nations for the third of such pauses since the season began three months ago – almost to the day.

In fact, some pretty salient names have been kept back.

Why Arsenal stars have stayed in north London

There’s been a degree of frustration within the Three Lions camp concerning the spate of absences in the build-up to the November international break. Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice are among those to have opted against the call-up, citing injuries.

Elsewhere, Martin Odegaard made his anticipated comeback last time out and proved crucial in the draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, arcing the delivery for Gabriel Martinelli’s opener.

However, after such a long layoff, the skipper’s decision to stay in north London, instead of linking up with the Norwegian national team, was one of great prudence.

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard

As the dynamic midfielder recuperates, another Arsenal star has found an opportunity to step up this week and put in a top showing ahead of the next round of gruelling domestic action.

Indeed, Mikel Merino ran the show for Spain.

Mikel Merino's stats for Spain

Arteta was bound to have taken note of Merino’s display against Denmark on Friday evening. Arteta, after all, is Spanish, and his compatriot is starting to grow into his skin after an injury-affected start to life in the English capital.

Mikel Merino in action for Spain

Merino joined the north Londoners from Real Sociedad this summer in a deal worth £32m but found himself languishing in the infirmary until October, having picked up a shoulder injury before he could make his competitive debut.

The 28-year-old has since completed nine appearances and scored during the draw against Liverpool. His combative and silky style brings much to Arteta’s squad, and he showcased such qualities superbly on the international stage this weekend.

Not only was Merino one of the steeliest figures on the field, winning a whopping nine ground duels and making three tackles, but he also completed four of five attempted dribbles, highlighting a mobile edge that, when enforced under Arteta’s wing, keeps things fluid for Arsenal.

Spain defeated Denmark to extend their lead in League A Group 4 of the Nations League, of which they are the holders, and Merino’s performance was crucial – especially as he was performing in another man’s boots, so to speak.

Indeed, Barcelona superstar Pedri was left on the bench for this one and introduced for Merino with ten minutes left to play. It was a big show of faith from Luis de la Fuente, whose team needed to avoid defeat against the Danes to secure top spot and confirm a place in the title play-offs.

Pedri, 21, has been hailed as “one of Europe’s best young players” by journalist Sam Dean, and despite suffering adversity throughout his fledgling career, the £67m-rated talent is one of the most promising players on the globe.

His technical prowess wasn’t preferred to Merino’s dynamic command of the central circle, however, and Arsenal must rejoice at the quality of midfielder they have brought in this season.

A long season stretches ahead, and duel-winning stars like Merino could make all the difference when the business end draws near.

Ashworth now urgently wants £520,000-a-year defender at Man Utd for Amorim

Manchester United are interested in signing a £520,000-a-year player as the first signing of the Ruben Amorim era, according to a recent report. The Red Devils are expected to announce the appointment of the Portuguese later on Thursday, with him taking charge on the 24th of November, as he remains in charge of Sporting for their next three games.

Dalot says Man Utd ace who struggled for Ten Hag is actually "unbelievable"

Diogo Dalot says a United teammate is incredible behind the scenes.

ByBrett Worthington Oct 31, 2024 Man Utd transfer news

The 39-year-old is not through the Old Trafford door yet, but he will be pleased to see his new side sail to a 5-2 win over Leicester City in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.

Amorim has yet to get to grips with the United squad, but he is already potentially looking at where he can improve the team. In a new report, Amorim is said to want to bring Goncalo Inacio, Marcus Edwards and Pedro Goncalves with him to Old Trafford. All three players play for him at Sporting, and they are considered very important in his system.

They are not the only players he is interested in bringing to United, as the Red Devils may now have the edge in the race to sign striker Viktor Gyokeres. The Swedish forward has been sensational in Portugal, and while Arsenal are keen on the player, the Red Devils could be in line for his signature due to Amorim’s arrival at Old Trafford.

Ashworth urgently wants Wolves star at Old Trafford

According to Give Me Sport, incoming manager Amorim is keen to sign a new left-back and United have identified Wolves’ Rayan Ait-Nouri as the ideal transfer target. The 23-year-old has been at Molineaux since July 2021, when he joined from Angers SCO, and has been impressive for the Midlands side, especially this season.

Ait-Nouri, who Gary O’Neil described as a “great lad” last season, has scored three goals and recorded two assists in nine Premier League games this season, his latest goal coming against Brighton in the 2-2 draw last Saturday.

His performances have now caught the eye of United, as the report states Dan Ashworth and Co “will urgently look to acquire a left-sided wing-back” due to Amorim’s system requirements. The Red Devils’ interest is expected to intensify at the turn of the year, as he will enter the final 18 months of his contract, but Wolves do have the option to extend that by another 12 months.

Liverpool are also keeping an eye on the defender’s situation at Wolves, but given the injury concerns to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia and Amorim’s desire to play a back three/five, United may feel the need to press more seriously. That said, Ait-Nouri, who currently earns £520,000 a year, remains firmly in O’Neil’s plans, meaning it will not be an easy task to get him out of Wolves.

+ Confira e simule a tabela do Campeonato Brasileiro
