Babar 99, Sarfraz 81 ensure Australia need a whopping 538 for victory

Australia were left with needing 491 runs more with two full days of Test cricket still to go

The Report by Danyal Rasool18-Oct-2018Stumps Pakistan moved closer to a series-clinching win in Abu Dhabi today, breaking the back of the Australian bowling attack – and perhaps the spirit of the side – once and for all. On what was a draining day in ferociously hot conditions, Sarfraz Ahmed kept Tim Paine and his men out on the field for all but the last 12 overs. They amassed 400 runs in the process, and set Australia a gargantuan 538 runs to win. There was still time for Mir Hamza to get his first Test wicket, clipping the outside of Shaun Marsh’s off stump with perhaps the best delivery of the match. It was a day when good news kept coming for Pakistan; not only do they have their foot on Australian throats, but the two men chiefly responsible for it are the pair who most struggled for runs prior to this Test. Babar Azam and Sarfraz put on 133 for the sixth wicket, Babar falling agonisingly short of his first Test hundred, Mitchell Marsh trapping him in front when the 23-year old was on 99.Had it come, it would have arrived with all the stylishness archetypal to Babar in white-ball cricket. He respected the good balls – on the rare occasions Australia bowled them – and exquisite timing off both feet kept the boundaries flowing. The glorious cut behind point totemic to Babar was repeatedly struck with magnificent sweetness; one off Peter Siddle took him within two runs of the hundred. No one could have argued he didn’t deserve it had he got there.Sarfraz and Babar rotated the strike as if these were the middle overs of an ODI, and with Australia having pushed the field back, any serious intention to pick up wickets had long been sacrificed at the altar of saving boundaries. For Sarfraz, too, this Test has been like manna from the heavens. After his career seemed to be meandering aimlessly for the last few months, he appears to have shaken off the negativity and is batting like the man who forced his way into the side in 2014, ending the reign of the Akmals in Pakistan cricket. He scored 81, his second half-century of the match, but it meant yet another occasion this Test where a Pakistan batsman fell short of the three-figure mark.Babar Azam congratulates Sarfraz Ahmed on his second fifty of the Test•Getty Images

After tea, the game stalled somewhat strangely; Pakistan weren’t as keen to pursue quick runs as they might have been, while Australia bowled a tight enough line to make run-scoring more challenging. However, it continued to sap the energy from Australia’s reserves; in all, they were out on the field for 120 overs this innings. They will have to bat closer to 200 more to avoid a seemingly certain defeat. The day, though, will perhaps be remembered for a piece of astoundingly amateur cricket from Pakistan’s two most level heads. Half an hour into it, it appeared Asad Shafiq and Azhar Ali’s morning coffee still hadn’t begun to make its impact felt. Azhar edged Peter Siddle through the slips, the ball looking destined for the third-man boundary. The pair were so sure of the four, that they jogged to the middle of the pitch for a leisurely chat. (It isn’t yet known whether they, like Tim Paine and Nathan Lyon last match, were talking about which Inbetweeners episode they were going to watch that night). But the ball stopped just short of the rope, and Mitchell Starc threw it back to Paine, who effected a swift run-out. All this while, Azhar and Shafiq hadn’t moved an inch from the middle of the pitch, perhaps unwilling to accept how absent-minded they had been. Expect to find it in cricket-blooper videos for decades to come.At this stage, the lead was under 300, and Australia may have sensed a chance to bowl Pakistan out quickly. But Babar, whose place in the side has been under some scrutiny, played with the maturity he usually limits to white-ball cricket, and alongside him, Shafiq forgot the madness of the run-out. Pakistan’s scoring rate picked up in the last half hour before lunch, and Australia began to get desperate; both reviews were used somewhat frivolously. But Asad, who had along with Babar steered the game out of competitive waters with a 75-run stand found point off Labuschagne soon after lunch. Once again, Australia may have harboured hopes of running through the lower-middle order, but Pakistan were having none of it.It seems a long time ago, but the visitors had started the day particularly brightly, with Haris Sohail and Azhar back in the pavilion in a first hour where under 30 runs were scored. But by the time the desert sun finally set on another blistering day in Abu Dhabi, Justin Langer and his men would be forgiven for wondering if that had just been a mirage.

With Juan Soto On Board, Mets Must Build a Powerhouse

Juan Soto is trading the Bronx for Queens.

Late Sunday night, Soto broke the news—and the hearts of Yankees fans everywhere—that he had signed the largest contract in North American professional sports history with the New York Mets. Yes, those Mets.

Soto won't be in pinstripes. He won't be lacing balls off the Green Monster. He won't be joining a lineup that also features Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman. No, he's joining the Mets. And he'll immediately become the most talented player in franchise history.

Landing Soto was a monumental task for owner Steve Cohen and his franchise. They're paying the five-time Silver Slugger $765 million over the next 15 years. It's an audacious contract that announced to MLB that New York's other team means business. Now here comes the difficult part: building a championship roster.

APSTEIN: Juan Soto’s Self-Confidence Pays Off With Record MLB Contract

The Mets reached the National League Championship Series this year. It was an unexpected run that saw them oust the Milwaukee Brewers and Philadelphia Phillies along the way. But in the NLCS they collided into a brick wall that was decked out in Dodger blue. Ohtani, Betts & Co. sent the Mets packing in six games and sent a clear message that the NL will run through L.A. for the foreseeable future.

The Mets must change that.

Soto is now locked up for a long time, as is NL MVP runner-up Francisco Lindor, while outfielder Brandon Nimmo is signed through the 2030 season. Third baseman and postseason hero Mark Vientos won't even hit arbitration eligibility until 2027, and Jeff McNeil is inked through at least 2026. Other key players like closer Edwin Diaz and starter Kodai Senga can opt out of their deals after next season, and outfielder Starling Marte is a free agent after the 2025 campaign.

Lindor and Vientos were New York's only hitters on the team to play in 100 or more games and post an OPS over .800. On the mound, the team's top three starting pitchers are all free agents. Luis Severino already signed with the Athletics, while Sean Manaea and José Quintana are exploring the market.

There are a lot of gaps on the roster and general manager David Stearns needs to get to work filling them.

HOT STOVE TAKES: Juan Soto’s Record-Breaking Deal Isn’t Just About the Money

Already this offseason New York has signed pitchers Frankie Montas and Clay Holmes, but first baseman Pete Alonso remains a free agent. It's possible the Soto deal means Alonso's time with the franchise is over. If so, the Mets need to find replacement bats.

The Mets didn't sign Soto to be content with making the postseason. It's a move designed to put the franchise in World Series contention every year. As currently constructed, they can't do that. Soto has already been to the World Series twice and won once. He has a championship pedigree and needs to be surrounded by players who can help him get there again.

Stearns needs to take advantage of Cohen's comically large checkbook and find the pieces to build a championship squad around his shiny new star.

The Mets landed the greatest player their franchise has ever seen. Now the hard part begins.

Harmanpreet dazzles in Derby, Rolton rocks Mithali's India

Four memorable India-Australia knockout matches from past Women’s World Cups

Srinidhi Ramanujam29-Oct-20252017 semi-final, DerbyRain, a wet outfield, and fire from Harmanpreet Kaur. She blasted an unbeaten 171 off 115 balls, transforming women’s cricket in India. She walked in with India tottering at 35 for 2 and walked out with Australia in ruins. The first fifty was measured, the next two were mayhem: off 26 balls, then 17. In all, she launched seven sixes and even a mid-pitch mix-up with Deepti Sharma and a flying helmet couldn’t deter her focus. By the time India reached 281 for 4, Harmanpreet had rewritten what Indian batting could look like. Australia fought back through Elyse Villani and Alex Blackwell, but Deepti’s final strike ended the resistance. On that rain-soaked English evening, Harmanpreet’s innings wasn’t just brilliant. It was a statement, and Derby remains India’s only win over Australia in a knockout game in the Women’s World Cup.Australia win a home World Cup in front of a record crowd•Getty Images2020 final, MelbourneIn front of 86,174 roaring fans at the MCG, India played their first T20 World Cup final, but Australia steamrolled them. Beth Mooney proved the perfect foil, rotating the strike and punishing the loose balls during her unbeaten 78, as Australia posted 184 for 4. In response, India, hurt by injuries and quick strikes, folded for 99 in 19.1 overs. India’s chase then unravelled – they suffered four run-outs – and they were eventually bundled out for 117. Australia won their fifth ODI World Cup title, while for India just being there was historic – a young captain, a team of trailblazers, and the promise of what could be.

Liverpool join January transfer race to sign the Bundesliga’s next Gvardiol

Liverpool have now joined the race to sign a defensive reinforcement alongside interest from rivals Chelsea and Manchester United.

Slot shaping Liverpool future without Salah?

Arne Slot simply had to make a big call last weekend. PSV Eindhoven’s 4-1 thrashing took Liverpool’s form from a blip into a full-blown crisis and something had to give. Unfortunately, that something against West Ham United was Mohamed Salah.

Liverpool’s Egyptian King was forced to watch on from the bench as the Reds finally put in a more controlled performance and Alexander Isak netted his first Premier League goal for the club. But as much as that victory came as a relief, it also raised a serious question about Salah’s place in Slot’s best side.

Ahead of Liverpool’s crucial clash against Sunderland on Wednesday evening, Slot revealed Salah’s reaction to being dropped – telling reporters: “It’s a normal reaction from a player that is good enough to play for us.

“He wasn’t the only who wasn’t happy he wasn’t starting. The way he behaved is the way you would expect of a professional. He handled himself really well. A top professional.”

Whether we’ll see Liverpool’s star make a return to action in midweek remains to be seen. After returning to winning ways, Slot may be asking himself whether he can afford to change things up.

He's like Arteta: Liverpool line up "best coach in the PL" to replace Slot

Arne Slot is under intense pressure at Liverpool after a shocking run of form.

2 ByAngus Sinclair Dec 2, 2025

Of course, it’s worth noting that a large part of the Dutchman’s backline simply can’t be changed. Whilst Conor Bradley is back in training, he won’t be ready to face Sunderland, which leaves Joe Gomez as the only other more recognisable right-back unless Dominik Szoboszlai drops in again.

Meanwhile, Slot still has just two centre-backs available in Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate, which is a problem that the Reds could solve by signing Castello Lukeba in January.

Liverpool join January race to sign Lukeba

As reported by Caught Offside, Liverpool have now joined the race to sign Lukaba alongside Man United, Chelsea and Newcastle United in the January transfer window.

The RB Leipzig defender no longer has a release clause worth €90m (£79m) and will be available for just €60m (£52m) in the winter window. As concerns continue to grow that Liverpool could still miss out on Marc Guehi, Lukeba has suddenly emerged as an ideal option.

Compared to Manchester City’s Josko Gvardiol by the Bundesliga’s official website, the Frenchman could yet make a similar impact on England’s top flight next year, ranking in the 99th percentile against other centre-backs in the top five leagues for successful take-ons.

It’s easy to see where the comparisons with Gvardiol have come from. Lukeba is an excellent central defender who’s great on the ball, capable of carrying or passing it forward and destined for a big move.

Dubbed “unique” by Como scout Ben Mattinson last year, the Leipzig star is also still just 22 years old and yet to reach the peak of his powers. Even if Konate does sign a new contract at Anfield, Lukeba could arrive and take his place in Liverpool’s strongest side in 2026.

Julian Alvarez is now urging Atletico Madrid to sign £69m Chelsea star

Atlético Madrid star Julian Alvarez is very keen for Diego Simeone to bring in one Chelsea star this summer, and has privately urged his club to do so, according to reports this week.

Enzo Maresca attracting criticism at Chelsea

Having led the club to just five wins from their last 16 Premier League games, it’s been a tough time for manager Enzo Maresca as of late, and this run of form has attracted criticism.

Chelsea now prepared to make "hefty" £68m offer for Malo Gusto alternative

The Frenchman has attracted criticism.

ByEmilio Galantini Apr 17, 2025

While Maresca is believed to retain the backing of Chelsea’s board for now (The Mail), sections of supporters are starting to question the Italian’s leadership, with boos ringing around Stamford Bridge after their 2-1 defeat to Polish minnows Legia Warsaw in the Europa Conference League on Thursday.

Chelsea are in the Conference League semi-finals regardless, and remain firmly in contention to qualify for next season’s Champions League, but the manner of their recent performances are drawing some concern.

Speaking in a post-match press conference after their loss to Legia on Thursday, Maresca suggested he is fully aware of the dissatisfaction right now.

“No, for sure in terms of setback, for sure it’s a setback tonight for us, no doubt, first of all because we lost the game,” said Maresca.

“But I said yesterday, I think probably the other clubs, as you said, in this moment they can feel more confidence around them, not only Aston Villa, Newcastle, all the clubs around us, but this is football and can change very quickly, so it depends a lot on us. As I said, Sunday for us is one of the finals, and winning that game can give us a final boost to reach our target.

“So in this moment, you win games, you see yourself and you are very happy. If you don’t win, no-one is thinking that you can finish in the right way, but for me it’s just how we manage the emotion.”

Despite an electric start to the campaign, when many viewed Chelsea as potential title contenders, Maresca’s side remain very much a work in progress.

They’ll need their star players to step up and take a leading role during this transition phase, but one of them already is.

Julian Alvarez urges Atlético Madrid to sign Enzo Fernández from Chelsea

Club-record signing Enzo Fernandez is well and truly justifying his price tag right now, becoming an indisputable member of Maresca’s team with some outstanding performances throughout 2024/2025.

Maresca has entrusted the captain’s armband to him this term, with former Chelsea midfielder John Obi-Mikel praising Fernandez and stating he’s “becoming” a true leader at Cobham.

Some members of the media have even called the Argentine’s contribution “underrated”, but his quality isn’t lost on international teammate Alvarez, who is desperate for Atlético to strike a deal for the midfielder this summer.

That is according to reports out of Spain, which state that Alvarez has privately urged Atlético to sign Fernandez from Chelsea, amid claims the west Londoners will demand a minimum of £69 million to let him go.

However, it is believed that even this figure is beyond Atletico’s capabilities right now, so a transfer is unlikely, even if Maresca’s side entertained the notion of parting company.

After a tough start to life in west London, the player has now fully found his feet, with Fernandez even attracting praise from Lionel Messi during his time at Chelsea.

Arsenal join race to sign £30m Brazil striker with initial talks held

Arsenal have now joined the race to sign a Brazil striker, who could be available for quite a realistic transfer fee in this inflated market, as manager Mikel Arteta and interim sporting director Jason Ayto continue their pursuit of a capable number nine.

Arsenal scouring January market for new striker

Last week, Arteta confirmed to the media that Arsenal are indeed actively looking for a striker, following Gabriel Jesus’ season-ending ACL injury.

These blows have left Arteta with gaping holes up front that need to be shored up, prompting reports that Arsenal have shortlisted many high-profile strikers for potential transfers before deadline day on February 3.

Arsenal are reportedly very keen on Juventus star Dusan Vlahovic, with some reports suggesting that they’ve already had a loan bid rejected. Meanwhile, it is believed by other media sources that RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko is a top target for Arteta and Sporting Lisbon sensation Viktor Gyokeres remains on Arsenal’s radar.

That being said, all three of the aforementioned centre-forwards would likely come at a premium, as Leipzig, Sporting and Juve certainly won’t be keen on losing their chief goalscorers midway through 2024/2025.

There are cheaper alternatives, though, like Marseille’s Elye Wahi – who could leave the Ligue 1 side for as little as £25 million.

Wahi hasn’t exactly been a dream signing for Roberto De Zerbi across the channel, but he did score 19 goals in 33 French top-flight matches for Montpellier during his best season in 2022/2023.

Alongside the Frenchman, another striker who could leave for a fairly decent transfer fee is Botafogo’s Igor Jesus.

Arsenal join race to sign Igor Jesus with informal talks held

As per Diario AS reporter Eduardo Burgos, Arsenal have held “informal” talks over signing Jesus from Botafogo after joining the race for his signature.

The 23-year-old earned his first caps for Brazil at the back end of last year, joining Botafogo last year off the back of some prolific seasons in the UAE League with Shabab Al-Ahli.

Jesus bagged 34 goals and 16 assists over 66 appearances for the Arab outfit, since going on to become one of Botafogo’s star attackers. The South American averages more shots at goal per 90 than any other player in their squad (WhoScored), registering five goals and three assists in the Brazilian top flight so far this term.

As well as this, it is believed his price tag stands at around £30 million.

Leeds could sign an exciting star who’d be their next Pablo Hernandez

Leeds United may look at their 1-1 draw with Preston North End in the Championship as two points dropped, despite their last-gasp equaliser.

They conceded a sloppy goal to go 1-0 down, as Pascal Struijk was easily beaten down the channel and Illan Meslier appeared to parry the ball into the corner of his own net.

Mateo Joseph helped to force a late own goal through Jack Whatmough but the result has now left the Whites three points behind Sheffield United in the table.

During the match, however, it was revealed that the West Yorkshire side have had an interest in one of the players from the opposition line-up.

Leeds United's interest in Preston star

Sky Sports commentator Gary Weaver was speaking during the first-half about Leeds’ search for a number ten to bolster their squad ahead of the January transfer window, and mentioned their interest in Gus Hamer, Emi Buendia, and James McAtee.

The Whites were linked with all three over the summer, including having a bid of £13m rejected for Sheffield United star Hamer, but a new attacking midfielder has been thrown into the mix.

Weaver claims that Leeds “have had a look at” Preston star Mads Frokjaer-Jensen in the past, with regards to their attempts to land a new playmaker.

There was no further mention of whether or not they remain keen on him or how much North End would want to allow one of their key players to depart from Deepdale next month.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Daniel Farke should, however, push to secure a deal for the Danish wizard in January because the German head coach could unearth his own version of Pablo Hernandez.

Why Frokjaer-Jensen could be Farke's Hernandez

Firstly, Frokjaer-Jensen is similar to the former Leeds star in the sense that he is a right-footed playmaker who can operate centrally or on the right flank.

Hernandez played 66 times for the Whites on the right flank, drifting inside into central areas to affect the play, and the Preston whiz started on the right wing on Saturday – creating one ‘big chance’ for his team.

Preston have averaged 47.1% possession in the Championship this season, which means that the Dane is in a team that does not create plenty of opportunities for him to thrive at the top end of the pitch. Whereas, Leeds average 62.1% possession and could provide him with more chances to showcase his quality.

As you can see in the table above, the creative potential is there for Frokjaer-Jensen to improve his output in a team that has significantly more of the ball.

The 25-year-old star, who produced eight goals and three assists in 28 league games for Odense in the 2022/23 campaign, could operate as a right-footed playmaker on the right flank, or as a number ten, like Hernandez.

Former Leeds winger Pablo Hernandez.

Leeds’ former Spanish magician created 41 goals in 175 matches for the club, which shows that it would take a lot for the Preston man to emulate his success, but his creative quality in a low-possession Preston team suggests that Farke could unearth his own Hernandez by singing him in January.

Arsenal chase £42m "box-crashing" titan who could already replace Merino

da wazamba: Arsenal may be a far better team than they were a few years ago, but as things stand, their season feels like it’s on the precipice of falling apart.

The Gunners played host to Newcastle United in the first leg, and despite going 2-0 down early in the second half, the manager didn’t turn to any of his summer signings, including Mikel Merino, who started in the draw against Brighton & Hove Albion on the weekend.

The Spanish international may well turn things around, but so far this season, he has struggled to impress the fans, so recent reports linking the club to another central midfielder this month shouldn’t come as a massive surprise.

Arsenal target former PL star

According to a recent report from Spain, Arsenal are one of several teams interested in signing Juventus ace Douglas Luiz this month.

Alongside the Gunners, the report has revealed that Manchester United, Tottenham and Fulham are all keen on the Brazilian star, who joined the Old Lady for £42m in the summer after years of impressive performances for Aston Villa.

However, the all-action midfielder has found himself out of favour in Turin, and with just 354 minutes played across 13 appearances thus far, the report claims that the North Londoners are keen to bring him back to England on a short-term loan.

It could be a complicated deal to get over the line, especially if other clubs come in with a permanent offer, but given Luiz’s brilliant performances for Villa over the years, it is one worth fighting for, even if it could spell trouble for Merino.

How Luiz compares to Merino

Okay, so while Luiz can play as both the six and eight in a team, the combination of Declan Rice and Thomas Partey already being in the squad and his attacking abilities would almost certainly see him take up the latter role in North London were he to join Arsenal this month.

Therefore, while it might be harsh, he would then be in competition with Merino for a place in the team, a competition many in England would back him to win.

With that said, though, how can we compare them to determine who really would be the ideal starter in that left-eight role for Arteta and Co?

Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz

Well, given that neither has played all that much, nor all that well for that matter, this season, the best way to figure this out would be to compare their underlying numbers from last season, as both players were regular starters and vital members of their respective teams.

Unfortunately for the former Real Sociedad star, when we do this, it’s the “box-crashing” Brazilian, as dubbed by analyst Ben Mattinson, who comes out on top, and by some margin at that.

For example, the former Villa star emerges victorious in the majority of relevant metrics, including but not limited to expected and actual non-penalty goals plus assists, progressive carries, shots, passing accuracy, key passes and passes into the penalty area, shots and goal-creating actions, interceptions and more, all per 90.

On top of having the better underlying numbers, the Rio de Janeiro-born dynamo had a far better rate of return, scoring ten goals and providing ten assists in 53 appearances, equating to an average of a goal involvement every 2.65 games.

In contrast, the Spaniard scored eight goals and provided five assists in 45 appearances for La Real, which came to a solid but less impressive average of a goal involvement every 3.46 games.

Ultimately, Merino may well come good for Arsenal and help them in their quest to win major silverware in the years to come, but as things stand, he’s struggling to assert himself on this team, and while Luiz is also struggling in Italy, we all know how effective he can be in the Premier League.

Therefore, if the North Londoners have an opportunity to land the Brazilian on a short-term loan this month, then they must take it.
