Chetan Sharma resigns as India's chairman of selectors after TV sting operation

Chetan Sharma had been reappointed to the role only in January

ESPNcricinfo staff17-Feb-2023Chetan Sharma has resigned from his post as India’s chairman of selectors after being caught in an undercover TV sting operation. His resignation was accepted by BCCI secretary Jay Shah, according to an ANI report. On February 14, an Indian TV news channel released video footage of Sharma talking about various matters relating to the national team, including alleged issues between Virat Kohli and former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly, and Jasprit Bumrah’s injury. It appears that Sharma did not know he was being filmed clandestinely at the time.”Yes, Chetan has tendered his resignation to BCCI secretary Jay Shah and his resignation has been accepted. His position had become untenable after the sting operation,” a senior BCCI source told PTI. “He resigned voluntarily and wasn’t asked to resign.”Sharma was reinstated as chief selector only in January, after the BCCI had removed the entire selection panel in November following India’s semi-final defeat from the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia, and invited fresh applications. Sharma continued to function in his role until the new panel was appointed, with him once again as chairman. His exit leaves India’s selection panel comprising Salil Ankola, SS Das, Subroto Banerjee and S Sharath, with the BCCI yet to appoint a new chairman.Sharma, 57, played 23 Test matches and 65 ODIs for India between 1984 and 1994.

Manchester City players whose contracts are expiring in 2025 – list

da spicy bet: Manchester City have three players who are out contract at the end of this season, including one of the greatest heroes in the club’s history.

da fezbet: Pep Guardiola’s side may be enduring a season to forget in the Premier League, especially by their incredible standards, but there are signs that they may have turned a corner.

It feels like the end of an era at the Etihad, in terms of some legendary figures drifting past their peak, so big changes could happen within the squad during the summer transfer window.

5 potential replacements for Kevin De Bruyne at Manchester City

With Kevin De Bruyne into his 10th season at Manchester City, here are 5 possible successors if he says goodbye to the Etihad.

ByBarney Lane Oct 20, 2024

There are three players whose contracts expire at City this summer – will they all be moving on?

1 Scott Carson Contract expires: 30th June 2025

It’s almost a running joke that Scott Carson is still a City player considering how little he has featured for them since arriving from Derby County back in 2021, having initially joined on loan in 2019.

The English veteran was brought in as a way of improving the Citizens’ homegrown quota, but he has only made two appearances in that time, warming the substitutes’ bench or not even being in the matchday squad most weeks.

Now 39 years of age, Carson’s time at City looks likely to come to an end once this season reaches its conclusion, having signed a one-year extension last year. He turns 40 in September, and the club will surely be able to find a stronger homegrown option between the sticks – perhaps someone who is equally happy to play a squad role.

2 Kevin De Bruyne Contract expires: 30th June 2025

When you think of the best players in City’s history, it is impossible not to think of Kevin De Bruyne, who has lit up the Etihad on so many occasions. The Belgian is not only one of the Citizens’ true greats, but one of finest players to grace the Premier League.

Now 33, cracks have started to appear with De Bruyne in terms of injuries racking up and his legs not quite having as much energy in them, meaning there is a massive decision for the club to make at the end of the season.

The midfielder is out of contract at that point, and he can sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club now that the January window is open.

It does feel increasingly as though his time as a City player is coming to an end. Kyle Walker has asked for a move to a different country and it is easy to see the same happening with De Bruyne.

Of course, there is the option for City to offer De Bruyne an extension should they feel that there is still plenty of life in him, but there is a question mark against that. Keeping him on with huge wages would be a big risk, with Guardiola potentially feeling that a younger replacement needs to be found to inject fresh blood into his starting XI.

If De Bruyne does depart in the summer, there will no doubt be a special ovation for him at some point at the Etihad, as City’s supporters hail one of the most talented footballers in their history.

3 Ilkay Gundogan Contract expires: 30th June 2025

The return of Ilkay Gundogan last summer was met with plenty of excitement by some City supporters given what an influential and legendary figure he was during his first stint at the Etihad. It was a move that made plenty of sense, allowing the German to return to the club for free after a short spell at Barcelona.

However, it hasn’t quite worked out the way Gundogan and Guardiola would have hoped, with the 34-year-old looking his age, not least after Rodri’s ACL injury saw City’s midfield lose so much of its dynamism.

As has always been the case with the German, Gundogan’s effort levels cannot be questioned, but he simply isn’t able to cover ground as effortlessly as he once did, and this has undoubtedly played a part in City’s struggles.

The former Germany international signed a one-year deal with the Citizens last year, but he also has the option to extend his stay at the Etihad by another 12 months. A recent report has claimed that Gundogan’s future is uncertain, with the likes of Galatasaray eyeing him up at the end of the season.

Like De Bruyne, it may just be the right time for City to move him on, allowing Guardiola to begin a new era at the club by signing players in their 20s instead of having ageing figures in the middle of the park.

Rangers now willing to seal pre-contract agreement with "fabulous" 29 y/o

Rangers are now ready to try and seal a pre-contract agreement with a “fabulous” player in the January transfer window, according to an intriguing new update.

Clement under more pressure at Rangers

The Gers could only draw 2-2 away to Motherwell on Sunday afternoon, in what proved to be another disappointing day at the office in the Scottish Premiership, as they lost further ground on rivals Celtic over the weekend.

While Philippe Clement’s side came from 2-0 down to earn a point, it did little to ease the pressure on the manager, who continues to flatter to deceive in the job this season, overseeing too many unconvincing results and performances.

Rangersmanager PhilippeClement

There don’t appear to be any immediate signs that Rangers will look for a change of manager after the draw, but the home clash with Celtic on January 2nd feels like a huge game for Clement, with defeat having the potential to really crank up the heat on him and lead to further calls from supporters for his sacking.

The Belgian will hope that he is aided in the January transfer window, being given reinforcements in his squad, should he still be in charge come the end of the month. One player is now being linked with a move to Ibrox, although it may not be until the summer.

Rangers eyeing free signing of "fabulous" player

According to The Boot Room, Rangers are keen on striking a pre-contract agreement with Burnley midfielder Josh Brownhill ahead of snapping him up on a free transfer at the end of the season. The 29-year-old is wanted by a host of clubs, however, including rivals Celtic, so the Gers will have their work cut out trying to acquire his signature.

Brownhill would represent a really astute signing by Rangers, with the Burnley man now a hugely experienced figure – one who helped the Clarets seal promotion from the Championship, winning the title in style back in 2022/23 with 101 points.

The midfielder has also made 111 appearances in England’s top flight, outlining how he has proven himself as a top-level player over a consistent period, but he is still at an age where he has plenty to offer.

Former England midfielder Lee Hendrie has made it clear what he thinks of Brownhill as a player in the past, saying: “Josh Brownhill, I think he is a fabulous player, I really do. Out of [Sander] Berge and him, I’d take Brownhill all day just because Josh Brownhill reminds me of John McGinn.”

Although the Englishman wouldn’t be arriving in January, instead joining for free in next year’s summer transfer window, it makes complete sense for Rangers to sign him this way, in order to avoid paying a fee.

Rangers and Clement could now allow "warrior" to leave in January

The 23-year-old is attracting interest from Europe.

1 ByDominic Lund Dec 28, 2024

This takes away some of the risk element, should Brownhill head to the Gers and suddenly pass his prime in no time at all, but there is no reason why he wouldn’t be a strong signing for at least several more years.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

In the wake of the injury, Davies' agent, Nedal Huoseh, voiced his frustration, claiming that the Canadian federation failed to protect the player. He suggested that the Bayern star was not fully fit ahead of the match and was allegedly pressured into starting by head coach Jesse Marsch. His remarks added fuel to Bayern’s growing anger over the situation, further intensifying tensions between the German club and Canada Soccer.

Bayern have now reportedly threatened to explore legal options against Canada Soccer, citing "grossly negligent" medical care. According to the club, Canada’s medical staff failed to detect the ACL tear, with the full extent of the injury only becoming clear after Davies returned to Germany for further evaluation.

  • WHAT CANADA FA SAID

In response to Bayern’s allegations, Canada Soccer issued a firm statement defending their handling of Davies’ injury. The federation insisted that their medical team followed all appropriate protocols and maintained continuous communication with Bayern Munich throughout the tournament.

“We further reviewed the circumstances related to the medical care provided to Alphonso Davies," a statement read.

"Medical documentation confirms that proper care protocols were followed, and communication records show that our medical staff provided updates to Bayern Munich throughout the entire tournament. We spoke further with Bayern Munich today to provide them with context and details to address any misunderstandings. We are all focused on supporting Alphonso in the months ahead.”

    WHAT NEXT FOR DAVIES?

With the ACL tear confirmed, Davies is expected to be sidelined for several months, forcing him to miss some of the biggest fixtures in Bayern’s calendar. The German club are currently fighting for the Bundesliga title and a potential Champions League final, which will take place at their stadium. His recovery timeline now extends into the 2025-26 season.

No Rashford, Fernandes gets new role: Man Utd’s dream XI under Amorim

Manchester United look set for yet another new manager after the departure of Erik ten Hag, who spent two-and-a-half years in the post at Old Trafford.

The final straw was the Red Devils’ 2-1 loss against West Ham United on Sunday afternoon, a result that condemned his side to a fourth defeat in just nine Premier League outings.

Ten Hag was also unable to secure any wins in the first three Europa League matches of the season, drawing all three matches against FC Twente, Porto and Fenerbahçe.

However, it appears that the hierarchy have already acted quickly in moving for a replacement, with journalist Fabrizio Romano confirming that they have triggered Ruben Amorim’s exit clause in his contract at Sporting Lisbon.

The 39-year-old is already said to have accepted the club’s proposal, with a deal rapidly advancing in the hope he can be appointed in time for Sunday’s clash at home to top-four hopefuls Chelsea.

His potential appointment will undoubtedly bring about excitement amongst the fanbase given his record in Portugal, which has seen him achieve a 71% win percentage over the last three years.

Amorim will likely deploy his 3-4-3 system, a tactic in which he’s enjoyed the majority of his success, as we look at what his dream United starting XI could look like…

1 GK – Andre Onana

Goalkeeper Andre Onana has been a key member of the United squad so far this season, producing some crucial saves to prevent Ten Hag’s side from dropping further points.

Arguably, his best moment came in the 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace, with the 28-year-old making a miraculous double save which was awarded with the September Save of the Month award.

2 RWB – Diogo Dalot

Whilst he’s yet to reach the performance levels of last season, the Portuguese full-back could be about to reach the next level under the guidance of his compatriot.

He produced a moment to forget in the defeat to West Ham last weekend, missing an unguarded net, but Amorim’s potential appointment could allow him to surpass the levels demonstrated during 2023/24.

3 CB – Leny Yoro

Leny Yoro for Man Utd.

After joining in a £52m deal from Lille last summer, the United fanbase are yet to get a glimpse of the French wonderkid after suffering an ankle issue towards the back end of pre-season.

However, the 18-year-old arrived with huge potential to be a success after beating off the likes of Real Madrid for his services.

Many will be hoping that the 39-year-old will be able to aid his development and showcase why the hierarchy were so keen to splash out such a fee on a young talent.

4 CB – Matthijs de Ligt

Like many of the new summer additions, Matthijs de Ligt is yet to provide value for money, struggling to make an immediate impact in the Premier League.

However, the former Juventus and Bayern Munich man has featured at the very top of European football throughout his career, with a new manager injecting a new philosophy potentially allowing him to reach the heights many expected him to upon his arrival.

5 CB – Lisandro Martínez

jean-clair-todibo-lisandro-martinez-tottenham-opinion

The Argentine has been one of few Ten Hag signings who have caught the eye since their respective moves to Old Trafford, making 71 appearances since his transfer in 2022.

Amorim’s back-three system could allow the 26-year-old to thrive even further, offering more defensive cover around him, with the Portuguese boss’ possession-based approach falling perfectly into his hands.

6 LWB – Luke Shaw

Luke Shaw

It’s been a couple of years to forget for full-back Luke Shaw, with the 29-year-old constantly plagued with fitness and injury issues during Ten Hag’s tenure.

He only made 15 appearances in all competitions last season, whilst also failing to appear as of yet in 2024/25, but he will be hoping that he can put his issues behind him and become a regular under the potential new boss.

7 CM – Kobbie Mainoo

The youngster’s rise into the first-team in Manchester has been nothing short of sensational, breaking through last season before securing a regular starting role in recent months.

He may only be 19, but it hasn’t stopped the midfielder from breaking into the England side and becoming a key member of the Premier League squad this campaign.

Given his age, ability to find pockets of space and be comfortable in possession, he could prove to be a real key player throughout United’s new era.

8 CM – Manuel Ugarte

New summer signing Manuel Ugarte hasn’t hit the ground as many expected him to, only managing to start one Premier League meeting so far in 2024/25.

However, Amorim previously managed the Uruguayan, helping him achieve the best form of his career before his transfer to PSG in the summer of 2023.

Given his successes under the potential new boss, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the 23-year-old become a key player in the heart of United’s midfield in the coming months.

9 RAM – Bruno Fernandes

It would only be a slight change in role for Bruno Fernandes, but any appointment could see him in a more permanent attacking berth alongside another forward behind the central striker.

The “sensational” Portuguese international, as dubbed by former Red Devil Paul Scholes, has registered 70 assists since his move to Manchester back in 2020, having all the tools to improve his tally under his compatriot.

Out of possession, he could tuck inside centrally to create a three-man midfield, therefore making United more compact and harder to break down – something which has been way too easy as of late.

10 LAM – Alejandro Garnacho

The academy graduate has often featured off the left-hand side since his emergence into the first team, catching the eye with his ability to get past the opposition and cut inside onto his stronger right foot.

Amorim’s appointment wouldn’t take that role away from him, but could see the Argentine operate in an ever so slightly more central role out of possession.

That would then see the 20-year-old – who boasts eight goals and assists this season – given the nod over Marcus Rashford, with Garnacho having cemented that left-sided berth in recent times.
