Simpson reaches 92 as Eskinazi, Higgins add half-centuries at Leicestershire
ECB Reporters Network20-Sep-2022Half-centuries from John Simpson, Steve Eskinazi and Ryan Higgins combined to give Middlesex what they will regard as a satisfactory opening day’s work as they seek to clinch promotion from Division Two of the LV= Insurance County Championship with two matches left.Middlesex, who started the penultimate round on 188 points – 27 behind leaders Nottinghamshire but 12 ahead of third-placed Glamorgan, finished the day on 293 for 8 with Simpson falling for 92 after Eskinazi had scored 64 and Higgins 53.Having chosen to put Middlesex in on a pitch that made batting tricky for much of the day, Leicestershire mostly bowled well as Michael Finan finished with 3 for 54, with Tom Scriven and Callum Parkinson taking two wickets each but paid dearly for some sloppy fielding, dropping Eskinazi on 11 and Simpson on 29.Middlesex had been four down for 91 at lunch after Leicestershire enjoyed a good morning with the ball but recovered to 196 for 5 at teaFinan, the 26-year-old left-arm seamer plucked out of National Counties cricket, caught the eye again in his third first-class match, beginning the day by removing both Middlesex overs in an impressive opening spell with the new ball.He dismissed Mark Stoneman with his fifth ball, which straightened enough to have him leg before, and then bowled Sam Robson behind his legs. He would have had a third but wicketkeeper Harry Swindells spilled a chance off the glove offered by Eskinazi.Scriven, another recent addition to Leicestershire’s bowling resources, had Pieter Malan caught behind two balls after he’d got away with a streaky edge that second slip probably should have claimed. Skipper and left-arm spinner Parkinson, heeding some criticism about delaying his introduction against Durham last week, was on after 75 minutes and struck in the last over before lunch when his decision to install a short leg for Max Holden reaped a dividend as Sol Budinger took an excellent one-handed catch.Eskinazi completed a 94-ball half-century soon after driving Chris Wright through extra cover for his ninth four. After a watchful start to the session against another testing spell by Finan, a double bowling change allowed Simpson to get into his stride. A couple of boundaries off Scriven were particularly easy on the eye.Leicestershire were handed a gift when Eskinazi threw away his wicket. Presumably trying to create a different angle, he walked down the pitch almost before Scriven reached the crease and left his stumps completely exposed. It was the cricket equivalent of an open goal and Scriven gratefully converted it.It ended a 49-run partnership for the fifth wicket but by tea Simpson and Higgins had added another 56, Simpson having been the beneficiary on 29 of another dropped catch, this time put down at mid-wicket off Ed Barnes.A six down the ground by Simpson off Rehan Ahmed’s leg spin straight after tea was followed by the wicketkeeper-batter’s seventh boundary, eased past extra cover off Scriven, taking him to a 104-ball fifty, his eighth of the season. The sixth-wicket pair built patiently thereafter against some tidy Leicestershire bowling, but their partnership was broken on 99 when Higgins, having just completed a solid 94-ball half-century with a well-timed clip through mid-wicket for four, took a stride forward to a ball from Parkinson that turned just enough to find the edge, Colin Ackermann holding the chance at slip having dropped the one at mid-wicket.With that, Parkinson held back on asking for the new ball, Ahmed justifying the decision as Luke Hollman top-edged an attempted sweep straight to backward square, leaving Middlesex 248 for 7.When the new ball came, Simpson seemed to enjoy the return of pace on to the bat but after moving into the 90s by driving a gift full toss from Finan down the ground for his 10th four he went to sweep the next ball and lived to regret it, sending up a top edge that Budinger safely pouched in the deep. The day began with both teams forming a guard of honour for umpire Nick Cook, who is standing in his last match on this ground ahead of his retirement at the end of this season at the age of 66. Born in Leicester, Cook took 395 first-class wickets for Leicestershire as a left-arm spinner, as well as 52 in 15 Test matches.

As Rangers chase attacking reinforcements in 2025, Pete O’Rourke has issued an update on what he’s now heard from Romania on Rangers’ pursuit of FCSB’s Darius Olaru.
Rangers transfer news
Following defeat against title rivals Aberdeen, Philippe Clement looked destined to lose his job at Ibrox before turning things around at the perfect time. Since that 2-1 defeat, Rangers have defeated Motherwell, earned a point against Olympiacos in the Europa League and defeated Hearts to ease at least some pressure on their manager.
What has far from helped the Belgian in a season of struggle is, of course, Rangers’ recent finances. The Gers reported a pre-tax loss of £17.2m to add to their woes and hand Clement the difficult task of turning things around without necessarily receiving financial backing in the transfer market.
It represents the ultimate frustration for those at Ibrox, who saw their side crowned Scottish champions and on the up just four years ago. Now left struggling on and off the pitch, O’Rourke has issued more bad news regarding the Gers’ pursuit of Olaru.
According to O’Rourke, Rangers have indeed been keeping tabs on Olaru in an attempt to add some goals to their midfield, but what he’s heard is that FCSB will demand a “decent fee”, and that will price the Scottish giants out of a move for the 26-year-old.
In fact, well-placed sources closer to home have reportedly told O’Rourke that ready-made funds aren’t available for Clement at this time, leaving the manager to come up with internal solutions if he wants to fix his side’s problems.
Rangers could replace Lawrence at Ibrox by signing De Bruyne-like star
Glasgow Rangers are reportedly interested in a deal for the attacking midfielder.

Nine points adrift in the Scottish Premiership title race, sat third and unlikely to welcome reinforcements, to say that Rangers are running out of reasons to be positive would be an understatement. If things do change, however, then Olaru is certainly a player they’d be wise to welcome.
Olaru would help stop the rot at Rangers
After a summer clear-out saw the likes of John Lundstram and Ryan Jack depart, Rangers opted to welcome younger players and those who were always unlikely to make an instant impact on Clement’s side. And as a result, they’ve paid the price ever since. Olaru wouldn’t come under that category, however.
26 years old and the captain of FCSB, the midfielder would go a long way towards steering Rangers back in the right direction. Not only would he add much-needed leadership at the heart of Clement’s side, but also goal contributions from the middle of the park. The Romanian has scored an impressive 10 goals and recorded a further five assists in 21 games in all competitions for FCSB so far this season in the type of record that would hand Rangers an instant boost.
For now, however, those at Ibrox can merely window shop rather than invest thanks to their current financial position. They must hope that, by the time they rediscover their balance off the pitch, they’re still in a strong enough position to welcome talents of Olaru’s calibre.
Aston Villa could be offered the opportunity to re-sign a former player this January as Douglas Luiz continues to struggle at Juventus, according to a new report.
The Villans will be hoping this week before the international break will be better than last week, as they dropped points against Bournemouth before being knocked out of the Leage Cup by Crystal Palace and then brushed aside by Tottenham Hotspur. They face massive games against Club Brugge and Liverpool in the space of a few days.

Aston Villa did not see the best version of the ace, who was then worth £50m.
ByDan Emery Nov 5, 2024 Aston Villa transfer news
Unai Emery’s side were very busy during the summer, adding many players to their squad as well as letting several leave. Now, despite the fact they have made another good start to a season, they have their eyes on players who they think will improve them in the second half of the campaign and beyond.
Villa are interested in signing Getafe’s Christantus Uche, a midfielder who has been catching the eye with his impressive performances in La Liga. As well as looking to sign Uche, Monchi and NSWE also have their eye on Loic Bade, another player who plays in La Liga. Villa are looking to improve their defence, and the Sevilla man is on their radar.
But Bade is not the only Sevilla player that Villa is interested in signing, as they also have their eye on Stanis Idumbo, with competition from Everton. The 19-year-old is considered an exciting prospect by the La Liga side, and therefore, they are not looking to sell him anytime soon.
Aston Villa could be offered chance to re-sign Douglas Luiz
According to Calciomercato, relayed by Sport Witness, Aston Villa could be offered the chance to sign Douglas Luiz in January. The Brazilian left Villa Park during the summer transfer window after spending five seasons at the club to join Serie A giants Juventus, following his transfer from Manchester City in 2019.

Luiz, who was described as a “standout” performer in the Premier League by The Athletic’s Jacob Tanswell, has yet to score for Juventus in his nine games in all competitions. The midfielder has started just two of those nine games and has missed the last four games with a muscle injury.
Now, according to this report, Luiz was in fact ready to play for Juventus’ last game against Udinese, but he wasn’t called up at all because Thiago Motta doesn’t trust him. The Italian side are already considering replacing Luiz with Parma’s Adrian Bernabe, and at the same time, Juventus want Luiz to regain his confidence, and that could be done by him going back to Aston Villa on loan.

The Italian giants are weighing up what to do with Luiz, who is valued at 55 million euros, which is roughly £46 million. Juventus want the midfielder to play in an environment he knows well, so a return to Villa Park could be a possibility, but it remains to be seen if Villa would be open to the idea.
The topsy-turvy nature of Tottenham’s frantic season continued on Sunday afternoon as Ange Postecoglou’s men returned to form with their most impressive result of the season in the Premier League.
A week ago Spurs were suffering a pretty dismal defeat on the road against a winless Crystal Palace but have responded emphatically since.
On Wednesday, the Lilywhites beat Manchester City in the Carabao Cup and continued where they left off against Unai Emery’s high fliers, winning 4-1.
That said, it could have been very different. Morgan Rogers fired home in the first half to give the visitors the lead but the Londoners fought back through Brennan Johnson, James Maddison and a brace from Dominic Solanke.
The summer signing’s return to form was certainly timely…
Dominic Solanke's performance in numbers
Since signing from Bournemouth in a £65m deal over the summer, Solanke hasn’t exactly been bad but you would expect more from a big-money striker.
Indeed, over the last three league games – matches with West Ham, Brighton and Palace – he had registered just two shots – numbers that hardly show your centre-forward in a glowing light.
Well, against Villa on Sunday, he certainly returned to form, registering as many as five shots, from which he scored two goals.
The first was taken beautifully after being slipped in by Swede Dejan Kulusevski. Solanke had a perfect one-on-one chance and dinked it over Emi Martinez.
The Englishman’s second was a great deal easier, tapping the ball home from a matter of yards out after Richarlison’s cut-back.
With the Brazilian coming back from injury, it was imperative that the former Bournemouth man returned to form and that’s exactly what he did, registering an xG (expected goals) tally of 1.66 and winning six of his ten duels.
That said, he arguably wasn’t the finest player on display at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The game’s man of the match should be midfielder Pape Matar Sarr.
Sarr's performance in numbers
Last weekend Sarr started the game from the bench in favour of James Maddison. That decision looks all the more bizarre when you consider his outstanding contribution to the win over Aston Villa on Sunday.
Handed a 9/10 match rating by Football.London’s Alasdair Gold, the Spurs reporter was one of a number of people who hailed the midfielder’s display, suggesting it was an ‘all action performance’.
Spurs fan and podcaster Lee McQueen described Sarr’s performance as “unplayable” while GOAL reporter Mitch Fretton summed things up succinctly, claiming it was a “masterclass” from the Senegalese.
Why did they think that? Well, the player’s numbers and key moments help to paint that picture.

The 22-year-old was phenomenal, and it was his interception that led to the third goal, breaking up the play before the ball found its way to Richarlison.
That was Sarr’s finest moment during his 90 minutes on the field. What else did he do? Well, he left the pitch boasting a 92% pass success rate, had as many as four shots and supplyied one key pass. It’s safe to say he was everywhere.
The young ace has only started three league matches in 2024/25 to date but on this evidence he should be undroppable, he should be one of the first names on the team sheet.
Spurs are undeniably a better side when he features in the team. The same cannot always be said of Solanke considering his performances prior to Sunday.
Spurs thought they'd signed the new Mousa Dembele, then he left for free

WHAT HAPPENED?
Chelsea are facing potential departures as the January transfer window slowly draws to a close on Monday. The Blues have seen a number of squad players linked with an exit, with Joao Felix, Christopher Nkunku, Ben Chilwell, Axel Disasi, Carney Chukwuemeka and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall struggling for playing time under Maresca this season. Disasi has been linked with a move to Aston Villa or Tottenham, while Felix and Chilwell are linked with moves to AC Milan and Crystal Palace, respectively.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Maresca has now claimed that he will be very pleased when the January transfer window officially closes, just hours after Chelsea's Monday night Premier League clash against West Ham. The game will kick off at 8pm (GMT) and the transfer window will shut at 11pm. The Italian boss went on to add that he will be 'relieved' when he arrives for work at Cobham on Tuesday morning following the end of the transfer window.
WHAT MARESCA SAID
Speaking to the media, Maresca responded to questions over his feelings with the transfer window ending soon: "For sure you have a feeling of relief. The players you are going to see, they are going to be here until the end, so there is not any noise about some of the players that are there.
“The word is relief. From now on until the end, we go on with these players and no more. In the small part, I think all transfer windows are similar. Last year when I was at Leicester (in the Championship) in January, players arriving, players to leave – it’s the same situation you live everywhere.”

WHAT NEXT FOR CHELSEA?
The west London side have been keen on reducing the inflated numbers in their squad after the summer transfer window saw them go all guns blazing with a number of players arriving at Stamford Bridge. While the departures would have helped the Blues, the 'noise' around the squad has been causing turbulence for the team as they continue to fight for the Champions League places in the Premier League.
Wolverhampton Wanderers have had a far-from-ideal start to the 2024/25 campaign. Gary O’Neil’s side currently find themselves languishing in 18th place, with just one point to their name. The only two sides below them, Everton in 20th and Southampton in 19th are yet to get on the board this season.
Things will not get much easier for the Old Gold; next up in the Premier League, they are set to face Aston Villa away from home on Saturday afternoon.
O’Neil will know something must change quickly to help propel them out of the relegation zone, and their form in front of goal could certainly be improved over the next few games.
Wolves form in front of goal – 2024/25
It has certainly been a torrid time in attack for the Molineux side so far this season. Alongside four other teams, they are the Premier League’s joint-third lowest scorers on four goals, with Nottingham Forest, Fulham, Everton and Crystal Palace also having scored the same number.
They have also created the joint-fifth lowest amount of expected goals in the top flight this term, along with Newcastle United, who beat them on Sunday afternoon. So far, the Old Gold have created just 5.4 xG, underachieving by 1.4 goals so far, as per Understat.

Stats from Understat
It is not like the Midlands club are creating chances much, either. According to FBref, they average seven key passes per game, a figure which currently ranks them 18th in the Premier League, ahead of only Ipswich Town and Leicester City.
Their 0.72 expected assists per game see them rank in joint-19th in the top flight. Of course, losing a player like Pedro Neto is no doubt going to affect this. He registered nine assists in just 20 Premier League games last season. However, they are struggling to create any substantial chances.
It is certainly frustrating for O’Neil that his side has not created many chances and are struggling to convert them when they do so. In terms of where their goals are coming from so far this campaign, they have so far had four different goalscorers.
Their main source of goals last season, Matheus Cunha, who bagged 12 times in the league, has just one so far this term. New signing Jorgen Strand Larsen is also on the same number, and so are midfield pair Mario Lemina and Jean-Ricner Bellegarde.
Cunha
It will no doubt be a concern to Wolves’ coaching staff that they are not finding the back of the net as often as they would have liked.
However, the answer to their problems could have been right in front of their noses just a few years ago.
Patrick Cutrone's goalscoring record
The player in question here is Como and Italy striker Patrick Cutrone. Once a classic Football Manager wonderkid, the now 26-year-old is finally starting to get his career back on track in the Italian countryside.
The striker struggled to settle down at any particular club after breaking through at Milan. He has also played for Empoli and Fiorentina in Italy, Valencia in Spain and for the Old Gold before finally finding a home at Como.
During his time at the Midlands club, he scored just three goals and registered four assists in 28 games. That included just two goals in England’s top flight, making 12 Premier League appearances in total. It’s safe to say his time over here was not the greatest.
Former Wolves striker Patrick Cutrone.
Since departing Molineux and settling into life around Lake Como, the attacker has finally discovered his best form. In 73 games in all competitions, he has scored 26 goals and grabbed eight assists. That includes 14 goals in Serie B last season, more league goals than any Wolves attacker managed last term.
Cutrone has certainly continued that form into the new campaign, now playing Serie A football under the management of none other than Cesc Fabregas. He has already scored two goals in 2024/25 and has one assist to his name in just four games so far, double the number of any Wolves player this term.
It certainly seems like Cutrone could have been the missing piece of the puzzle at Moulinex now, and could have helped the Old Gold convert more chances. Perhaps Wolves made a mistake by selling the striker. It’s funny how football works out, isn’t it?

Zimbabwe have left out as many as seven players from the recent T20I squad that played against Namibia
ESPNcricinfo staff10-Jun-2022Zimbabwe have left out as many as seven players who featured in the contingent that recently played against Namibia while naming their T20I squad for the upcoming T20Is against Afghanistan. The omissions include those of Tanaka Chivanga, Brad Evans, Victor Nyauchi, Ernest Masuku, Richmond Mutumbami, Tony Munyonga, and Brandon Mavuta. In their place, the selectors have picked Clive Madande, Blessing Muzarabani, Dion Myers and Ainsley Ndlovu. Those four were part of the just concluded ODIs against Afghanistan, but only Muzarabani and Myers got games. While Madande is uncapped in international cricket and toured Nepal last month with the Zimbabwe A squad, Ndlovu has played international cricket in all three formats but has not represented Zimbabwe since February 2020. His last T20I was in September 2019 in a tri-series involving Afghanistan and Bangladesh. Muzarabani’s last T20I came in September 2021, after which he played in the PSL for Multan Sultans and was picked as a net bowler by Lucknow Super Giants in the recent IPL. He was Zimbabwe’s highest wicket-taker in the recent ODIs, with seven wickets from three games. The three T20Is will be played in Harare on June 11, 12 and 14.T20I squad: Craig Ervine (capt), Ryan Burl, Regis Chakabva, Tendai Chatara, Luke Jongwe, Innocent Kaia, Clive Madande, Wessly Madhevere, Tadiwanashe Marumani, Blessing Muzarabani, Dion Myers, Ainsley Ndlovu, Sikandar Raza, Milton Shumba, Donald Tiripano.
Wolves are among the teams considering a transfer swoop for a free agent defender, according to a new report. Picking up just one point from a possible 12 so far this season, the Old Gold are seeking reinforcements outside of the transfer window.
Wolves signed Dendoncker instead of elite PL star who's now worth £67m
They could have had a treble-winner in their side
ByJoe Nuttall Sep 17, 2024 Wolves star singled out for praise despite terrible start
Wolves looked set for their first win in the league on Sunday as they took the lead against Newcastle United, but unfortunately Gary O’Neil’s side were unable to hang onto the lead and see out the game.
Despite eventually losing 2-1, one Wolves player was on the receiving end of some big praise for his work in Mario Lemina’s goal. Joao Gomes won the ball back in the middle of the park and played the ball forward to Matheus Cunha, before producing a moment of magic in the box by letting the ball through his legs for Lemina to tap home.
The move and in particular the dummy from Gomes left Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson amazed, labelling the skill as “unbelievable” and even comparing Gomes to the great Lionel Messi.
But that goal wasn’t enough for Wolves to claim all three points, and with the wait for a win still on, it seems that O’Neil might be prepared to turn to the free agent market to bolster his squad further.
Wolves considering free transfer swoop for "fantastic" player
According to HITC, Wolves are among the clubs considering making a move to sign free agent Joel Matip. Matip has been without a club since the end of last season when he left Liverpool, and now the West Midlands side are looking into a possible deal.
ousmane-diomande-joel-matip-liverpool-opinion
However, they are not the only team interested in the defender, who was once labelled as being “fantastic” by Jamie Carragher. AFC Bournemouth and Fulham are in the mix, while he’s also held talks with French and German sides already too.
Matip turned 33 in August and did have some injury problems during his last campaign at Anfield, as he only played 14 times last season, but the defender brings a wealth of experience with him and could be a welcome addition for a team like Wolves who are fighting at the foot of the table at this present time.
