Tactics board: Moeen's role, NZ's batting strategy and Sodhi's England match-up

A look at where the semi-final between England and New Zealand could be won or lost

Can England stave off Southee-Boult challenge? Our experts discuss

The 2016 World T20 semi-final. The 2019 ODI World Cup final. And now, the 2021 T20 World Cup semi-final. That’s three knockout matches in the last three World Cups. New Zealand have failed to win on the two previous occasions against England: can they get across the line this time around against the favourites? This is where the game could be won or lost.Where should Moeen bat?
England’s middle order has been largely untested in this competition. Only three batters have faced more than 60 balls and one of them, Jason Roy, is now injured. New Zealand have a well-rounded attack with all bowlers capable of bowling across all phases. Moeen Ali is the man in form and has been playing in these conditions for a while now.Recently, Moeen Ali has been the world’s most destructive batter vs spin•ESPNcricinfo LtdWith Roy not around, would it make sense for England to use Moeen at the fall of the first wicket to capitalise upon the powerplay or would England want to use Moeen the spin smasher to target Ish Sodhi and Mitchell Santner in the middle? Moeen at three – where he batted against South Africa – could upset New Zealand’s rhythm by ensuring they bowl pace to him and that could delay the overs bowled by spin.Dawid Malan is a slow starter and does not match up well against spin. In a knockout game, will England bank on Malan or the experience of Moeen who delivered just a month ago in an all-important IPL final wearing a Chennai Super Kings shirt? Can New Zealand capitalise on England’s death bowling
South Africa scored 49 runs in the last four overs the only time England were properly tested at the death. With Tymal Mills injured, England have lost their specialist in that phase. It remains to be seen whether Roy will be replaced by an extra bowler or not, but the options that England have at their disposal are not very exciting.England’s pacers have not been tidy in the death overs•ESPNcricinfo LtdAll their pace options have gone for plenty in the death across the last four years in T20 cricket. Barring Chris Jordan, who goes at 9.65 an over, their other options have conceded more than ten runs per over. New Zealand will look to follow the template South Africa set: keeping wickets in hand and maximising the death rather than going hard first up, particularly with a relatively shallow batting lineup that sees Santner carded at No. 7.Can New Zealand’s swing bowlers win the powerplay?
England’s batters have some outstanding numbers in the powerplay this tournament. Their scoring rate of 8.33 is the best in the tournament and they have the tournament’s second-highest run-getter in Jos Buttler.England the better team in the powerplay overs?•ESPNcricinfo LtdHowever, this will be England’s first night match in Abu Dhabi. Of the three venues in the UAE for this tournament, Abu Dhabi has been most favourable for seamers in the powerplay. Seamers average just 17.38 (at 5.92 runs per over) here compared to averages of 25.17 and 31.33 in Dubai and Sharjah respectively. If the combination of Trent Boult, Tim Southee and Adam Milne can extract seam, swing and bounce, then the England batters could face their toughest test in this tournament. Could 20 minutes of madness cost England the tournament? Only time will tell. Can New Zealand find a way to attack England’s fifth bowler?
If England replace Roy with a batter then how are they going to use their ‘fifth’ bowler? England’s fifth bowler has been fantastic so far in the tournament: together Moeen and Liam Livingstone have picked up 11 wickets and have conceded less than six runs per over. With three right-handed batters in the top three for New Zealand, it would mean England may opt for the spin of Adil Rashid or the quicks early on.Can New Zealand take the attack against Moeen and Livingstone, whenever they bowl? This will be vital if New Zealand are looking to put up a challenging score to defend or ease the pressure while chasing. Devon Conway, James Neesham and Santner are the left-handers in the middle order who may end up facing the fifth bowler the most, while Kane Williamson will need to show greater attacking intent than he has so far in order to take those spin overs down.Other things to watchSodhi vs England
Sodhi has a very poor record against England, conceding 298 runs (with 20 sixes) at an economy of 11.03 runs per over. But these numbers mean very little: the majority of those games were played on grounds in New Zealand with much smaller dimensions than Abu Dhabi. On Wednesday, he gets a chance to bowl to England on the biggest ground of the tournament. That could work in his favour.Morgan’s form
Eoin Morgan enjoyed his career-best form in 2019 and 2020 but this year, he averages 17.59 and strikes at 118. Whichever metric you look at, he is struggling. England’s middle order is hardly tested in the tournament and Morgan will want to ensure he can play an impactful innings in a pressure game. His performances in knockout matches across his career are underwhelming – though the sample size is small.

Inspired by football, Nigeria U-19s hope to restore cricket in the country

Having also received a pep talk from SA’s Bavuma, they are eager to shake off a poor start and make a splash in the World Cup

Sreshth Shah in Bloemfontein25-Jan-2020On March 24 2019, it seemed like Nigeria’s hard work at the Africa Division One tournament would amount to nothing. They had beaten the three teams ranked higher than them already – Namibia, Uganda and Kenya – and needed to only defeat Sierra Leone to qualify for the 2020 Under-19 World Cup. But Sierra Leone, having scored 138, reduced Nigeria to 91 for 7. Nigeria captain Sylvester Okpe couldn’t watch the game any longer.”I was in the dressing room, praying for a miracle,” Okpe, who idolises MS Dhoni and Daren Sammy for their calmness, said. “I was chewing on the bottle cap so hard that nothing was left of it.”However, their No. 8 Peter Aho came to the rescue. Before the match, Aho’s highest score in the tournament was 3. But he struck 21 off 32 balls on the day, including the winning runs, to seal Nigeria’s two-wicket win, and their spot in the 2020 Under-19 World Cup. It remains Aho’s highest score for Nigeria.ALSO READ: U-19 adventure only the tip of Japan’s cricket icebergThe scenes, as expected, were one that the team had never experienced before. As the players ran onto the ground to celebrate, bottles were thrown in the air, coaches performed silent prayers near the boundary, and some cried their hearts out.”When the game was going against us, the supporters at the pavilion were supporting Sierra Leone, because [the hosts] Namibia were second, and if we lost, then they would qualify on net run-rate,” Okpe told ESPNcricinfo. “Everyone was against us. If you watch the clip you won’t see me running onto the pitch, because I was crying – tears of joy – near the boundary.”It was a very emotional moment for us. To be the first team qualifying for a major ICC event. To make it for the first time in over 115 years of cricket in Nigeria, we were really excited and we couldn’t help but express it.”Cricket was introduced to Nigeria by the British Empire in the 18th century. The first time a Nigerian team played another country was in 1904, when they faced off against the “Gold Coast” (now Ghana). A power struggle between the expatriates and the locals then followed as both groups formed their own cricket associations in 1932 and 1933 respectively, and it took as long as 1957 for both associations to integrate and become one.Although cricket in West Africa was never popular, Nigeria led the charge in the 1960s to change that culture. They formed the West Africa Cricket Conference – together with Gambia, Ghana and Sierra Leone – to expand the sport in the region by 1976 and started the WACC quadrangular tournament, a bi-yearly event between the four teams. Such was Nigeria’s dominance that they won the first 10 editions between 1976 and 1997. But as football, boxing and athletics began to grow through the country, cricket took the backseat again.Nigeria captain Sylvester Okpe addresses the media•Getty ImagesWith Nigeria’s qualification into the U-19 World Cup, there’s hope that the interest around cricket would rise again. “Most support was coming from individuals and ICC previously,” board president Yahaya Adam Ukwenya told ESPNcricinfo. “Now, with the qualification, we have the government putting their hand up. More private sectors are coming through too.”The ICC has worked closely with us in setting up of tournaments. One of the reasons we’ve started doing well is the coaching clinics the ICC have conducted across the country, improve the standard of our practice sessions.”The side had also received a pep talk from the South Africa cricket team ahead of the tournament.”When we came to the World Cup, we were lucky to be in the same hotel as the Proteas too, who were there to play the first Test against England in Pretoria.”Temba Bavuma came to speak with us. We saw Faf du Plessis and Vernon Philander too – it’s really helped us, very encouraging. Bavuma spoke about believing in ourselves and being true to our processes. Told us to believe in our talent.”Another source of inspiration for them has been the Nigerian football team. Football is, by far, the most popular sport in the country, and the team believes they can learn a fair bit from the Super Eagles.”In soccer, the game never ends till the final whistle,” Okpe said. “Most of the Nigerian teams that succeeded, they don’t give up easily. In schools, we’ve played football like that also. The bond that comes with team spirit, it’s really helped us.Before the 2020 U-19 World Cup got underway, Okpe had said: “we are like the Leicester City of cricket… we can shock the world”, referencing how the English club defied odds of 5000/1 to win the 2015-16 Premier League season. While Nigeria haven’t had the best tournament so far, losing by ten wickets to Australia and by 246 runs against West Indies, they’ll hope to do well to remember how Leicester City eventually won that title.

Canada squad World Cup 2026: Which players will make it to the showpiece in USA, Mexico and Canada?

All you need to know about Canada's squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup

Canada played in only their second World Cup in 2022, and it was their first appearance since 1986. They will once again be part of the tournament in 2026 as one of the co-hosts, alongside the United States and Mexico.

Although their performance in the 2025 Gold Cup was somewhat disappointing, they had a successful campaign at the 2024 Copa America.

In their debut Copa America, the Canadians reached the semifinals, losing only to the eventual champions and reigning world champions, Argentina, once in the group stage and again in the semifinals.

In their six World Cup matches so far, Canada have yet to secure a win. They lost all their group stage games in both 1986 and 2022. In 2026, the Reds will be eager to break that drought and celebrate their first ever World Cup victory in front of a home crowd.

The team has some exciting talent and one of the top strikers currently playing in Europe. Will they be able to make history this time? Let's explore their potential squad for the tournament.

Getty Images SportGoalkeepers

In the goalkeeping department, Canada have two quality goalkeepers who could both start at the World Cup next year – Dayne St. Clair and Maxime Crepeau. Both keepers have been regular starters for their respective MLS clubs as well as the Canadian national team.

At the 2025 Gold Cup, coach Jesse Marsch alternated between Crepeau and St. Clair throughout the tournament. Jonathan Sirois of Montreal is also in contention to make a case for himself in Marsch's squad at the showpiece event next year.

Canada's backline comprises talented youngsters as well as experienced players who have been part of the national setup for a while now, with one of those players being Bayern Munich's Alphonso Davies. Davies is undoubtedly one of the most influential players in the Canadian team and will be a crucial asset for Marsch's side once he returns from injury. If the co-hosts are to make a deep run in the tournament, Davies will need to perform at the highest level.

Another important defensive figure for Canada is Davies' full-back partner, Alistair Johnston of Celtic in the Scottish Premiership. Johnston made his debut for Canada in 2021 and has been the team’s first-choice right-back ever since.

Along with the full-back pairing, Canada also have strong defenders in Derek Cornelius, who plays for Marseille in Ligue 1, and the young Luc De Fougerolles, who features for Fulham in the Premier League. Niko Sigur, Joel Waterman, and Kamal Miller are also solid options and could have important roles to play in Marsch's squad for the 2026 World Cup.

Along with a stable defensive setup, Canada have a reasonably strong midfield as well. Alongside homegrown young talents, Jesse Marsch's side will also have some top European-level players at his disposal for the showpiece event next year.

Tajon Buchanan of Inter Milan provides the co-hosts with versatility, as he can play in midfield, full-back, and wide midfield roles. Young Ismael Kone is another talented prospect who currently plays for Marseille in Ligue 1, while Stephen Eustaquio has been a regular starter for Porto in the Primeira Liga.

Jacob Shaffelburg, Mathieu Choiniere, and Ali Ahmed have also been in the mix to start for Canada at the World Cup and could be part of Marsch's plans.

In the attacking region, Canada have several threats, with the primary one being Juventus forward Jonathan David. The Canadian centre-forward is currently regarded as one of the best in his position in Europe, which led to his move to the Italian giants from Lille in Ligue 1.

Alongside David, Cyle Larin and Daniel Jebbison are also quality players who could complement him in the attacking third.

King channels Warne as Rockets blast off at Headingley

Trent Rockets began their Hundred campaign in fine style, defeating Northern Superchargers by 20 runs at Headingley thanks to a superb performance from their spin arsenal.Chasing 124 on a dry surface, last year’s runners-up could only manage 103 all out in 97 balls, Australian legspinner Alana King starring with 2 for 17 including a beauty that Shane Warne would have been proud of to clean bowl Bess Heath.Lucy Higham top scored with 26 for the Superchargers, as King – in combination with fellow spinners Kirstie Gordon and Ash Gardner – turned the screw, Aussie seamer Heather Graham also impressing with 3 for 13.

Earlier, Grace Scrivens was fast out of the blocks for the Rockets, showing her class with six boundaries in her 32 from 22 balls before picking out Linsey Smith to give Annabel Sutherland the breakthrough.Bryony Smith made 23 from 21 before becoming Sutherland’s second victim and Smith dismissed Gardner and Graham with consecutive deliveries to reduce the Rockets to 87 for 4.Nat Sciver-Brunt made an unbeaten 36 from 34 in a fine all-round display, later picking up two wickets, but was kept in check by an impressive performance in the field from the Superchargers, with Sutherland trapping Katie George lbw to finish with 3 for 14 and restrict the visitors to 123 for 5.They came up short with the bat, though, as the Rockets registered a commanding win.”It was nice to have a bit of turn and grip in the wicket,” King said. “We saw that the wicket did a lot in the first innings so we just had to keep our processes really simple. I love to have a pitch with a little bit of turn and I was happy to play my part.”It felt really nice out of the hand,” she said of the delivery which bowled Heath. “It’s a leg-spinner’s dream, so I’ll take that first pill. I’ve loved having Ash [Gardner] and HG [Graham] join the Rockets this year. We played three Aussies today and we loved getting the win.”

Newcastle make Anthony Elanga breakthrough! Magpies finally strike deal with Nottingham Forest to sign ex-Man Utd star after impressive campaign

Newcastle United have reached a breakthrough in their pursuit of Anthony Elanga, agreeing a deal worth up to £55 million ($74.8m) with Nottingham Forest. The 23-year-old Sweden international, who starred in all 38 Premier League games last season, will sign a five-year contract and is set to undergo a medical ahead of his move to St James’ Park later this week.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Newcastle and Nottingham Forest have agreed a deal worth £52 million plus bonuses for winger Elanga, as per Fabrizio Romano. The Athletic have added that the former Manchester United has has accepted personal terms and will sign a five-year contract after completing his medical in the coming days. The Magpies had a previous offer rejected but returned with an improved package that has now sealed the transfer.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Elanga’s move follows a standout 2024-25 campaign in which he contributed 17 goal involvements and played every Premier League game for Forest. His performances helped the club secure a seventh-place finish and qualification for the Europa Conference League. Manchester United are also set to receive a significant cut through a sell-on clause they had included in the Swede's sale.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Elanga joined Nottingham Forest from Manchester United in the summer of 2023 but quickly became one of the most consistent wingers in the Premier League. Newcastle have long admired the Swede and reignited their interest after a failed attempt last year. The Athletic revealed their final push came after Forest rejected the Magpies' £45 million bid in June.

    WHAT NEXT FOR ELANGA?

The 23-year-old winger is reportedly set to undergo his medical in the next 48 hours and is expected to join up with his new Newcastle team-mates by the end of the week. The club views him as a key attacking addition ahead of the new campaign. Forest, meanwhile, are expected to reinvest the funds into their summer rebuild.

He'd be incredible with Isak: Newcastle prepare bid for "deadly" £60m star

Alexander Isak will enjoy the off-season knowing two things: Newcastle United will play Champions League football in just a matter of months, and their success in achieving this feat (again) is largely down to his prowess in the final third.

The “intelligent” striker, as he’s been dubbed by reporter Ryan Taylor, will know more than two things, of course, but it’s these two facts which shape his footballing future and it’s this which matters most to the adoring Magpies faithful.

The Athletic’s David Ornstein believes the 25-year-old is staying put after his prolific Premier League campaign, but he’ll want to be rewarded, along with his teammates, after such a historic year, and Eddie Howe is on the same page, hoping to attack the looming transfer window with rapidity.

Here is a complete and balanced team, but it could do with some fine-tuning, for sure. With impressive prudence, Newcastle have planned ahead and are ready to strengthen their frontline.

Newcastle pushing to sign Premier League forward

As per The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards, Newcastle are indeed planning for a busy window and are ready to pounce for Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo, having made a right-sided forward one of their priorities.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Edwards reveals that the Magpies are ready to lodge bids for both the winger and Crystal Palace star, Marc Guehi, in what he describes as a ‘crucial summer’ for Howe and co.

The Cameroon international has been one of the best players in the Premier League this season, and the Bees would be looking for as much as £60m to grant their talisman’s departure.

Brentford's BryanMbeumocelebrates after the match

Manchester United also have a vested interest, but their ongoing efforts to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers star Matheus Cunha have led PIF to believe they can take the lead in the coming days.

What Bryan Mbeumo would bring to Newcastle

Howe’s walked across the breadth of the Premier League terrain, the good and the bad. He’s scrambled out of the pit of the division with Newcastle and he’s led them toward the peak, having now sealed a route into the Champions League across two of the past three seasons.

Newcastle United managerEddieHoweapplauds fans after the match

Though they’ve invested, United haven’t employed a scattergun approach on the level of some direct rivals, and yet they’ve found a formula for fluency, with Isak fronting a slick and coherent system.

Now just imagine Mbeumo in there too. Jacob Murphy has been immense all year, but Mbeumo would bring a different breed of potency, a new focal point which would ease Isak’s responsibilities and, paradoxically, allow him to take even larger strides in his remarkable development.

Mbeumo’s 20-goal haul in the Premier League this season left him behind an exclusive trio of powerhouses, with analyst Ben Mattinson rightly describing him as “one of the most deadly” players in the division.

He would elevate the existing stars, to be sure, and though Murphy and Anthony Gordon would help supply Mbeumo’s quest for goals, Isak could prove the most exciting partner for him, with the Sweden international noted to be the “best all-round forward in the Premier League” by pundit Ally McCoist.

The 23-goal Isak was only outscored by Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah this season, but he also finished the 2024/25 campaign ranked among the top 16% of strikers across Europe’s top five leagues for shot-creating actions, the top 13% for progressive passes, the top 7% for progressive carries and the top 8% for successful take-ons per 90, as per FBref.

The complete striker indeed. Isak could turn Mbeumo into a veritable monster, cementing his giddy form at a higher level and ensuring he enters some lofty conversations in the years to come.

Bangladesh's big four headline BPL team of the tournament

ESPNcricinfo XI: one uncapped batsman in a big-hitting line-up, a sprinkling of quality allrounders, and an impressive pace attack

Mohammad Isam and Peter Della Penna09-Feb-20191. Tamim Iqbal (capt), 467 runs in 14 matches (Comilla Victorians)He saved the best for the last, a stunning unbeaten 141 that decimated a strong Dynamites attack in the final. It took Comilla Victorians to their second title, and Tamim to second place on the run-getters’ list, behind Rilee Rossouw. He also scored two fifties in a tournament where he said he was “off-colour”.2. Sunil Narine, 279 runs and 18 wickets in 15 matches (Dhaka Dynamites)Till the last ball he bowled, Narine was a constant threat for every batting line-up. He took wickets at crunch moments, but it was his economy rate, 6.35 for the whole tournament, that stood out in particular, given that he played every game for the Dynamites. He also scored vital runs opening the batting.3. AB de Villiers, 247 runs in 6 matches (Rangpur Riders)He was the most talked-about overseas recruit in BPL history, and he delivered on the promise of big, blinding hitting in almost every game. His unbeaten century against the Dynamites was a brilliant effort, and his other quick knocks ensured that the Riders didn’t lose any of the six games he played.4. Yasir Ali, 307 runs in 11 matches (Chittagong Vikings)The brightest performer among the local uncapped cricketers, Yasir contributed significantly in Chittagong Vikings’ best outings in the tournament. He was impressive, scoring three fifties, but according to his captain Mushfiqur Rahim, Yasir should have pressed on after getting good starts. Maybe something for him to target going forward.Rilee Rossouw topped the run-scorers’ chart•Raton Gomes/BCB5. Rilee Rossouw, 558 runs in 14 matches (Rangpur Riders)The batsman with the most runs in the competition, Rossouw took charge of the Riders’ batting line-up from the word go although he was initially picked as a likely cover for de Villiers. Even in the presence of Chris Gayle, Alex Hales and de Villiers, it was Rossouw who led the Riders’ progress in the tournament, though his duck in the second qualifier was most inopportune.6. Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 426 runs in 13 matches (Chittagong Vikings)The Vikings’ progress to the last four was down to a team effort, but Mushfiqur’s runs were essential. He was critical to two of the Vikings’ successful chases, against the Victorians and Rajshahi Kings, and ensured that the largely low-budget squad kept winning when they had the momentum. He later said that it was the sort of campaign that made him “slightly” happy.7. Shakib Al Hasan, 301 runs and 23 wickets in 15 matches (Dhaka Dynamites)Shakib finished the tournament as the highest wicket-taker and among the top ten run-scorers. He played some important knocks for the Dynamites, and led them well with the ball, too. But as he said at the end of the final, he should have made more runs. Nonetheless, he won the Player-of-the-Tournament award.Shakib Al Hasan and Sunil Narine were crucial to Dhaka’s progress•Raton Gomes/BCB8. Andre Russell, 299 runs and 14 wickets in 15 matches (Dhaka Dynamites)Russell formed Dhaka’s quartet of strong allrounders, along with Shakib, Narine and Kieron Pollard. He muscled plenty of sixes but when it was needed the most – in the final – Russell couldn’t get one. Still, it was a good campaign for the allrounder.9. Mashrafe Mortaza, 22 wickets in 14 matches (Rangpur Riders)Mashrafe’s best bowling performance was his 4 for 11 against the Victorians, a spell in which he ran through the opposition’s top order. He did his job for the Riders, but a lopsided line-up meant that it wasn’t always enough.10. Taskin Ahmed, 22 wickets in 12 matches (Sylhet Sixers)Taskin finished with two four-wicket hauls, standing out as a star performer for Sylhet Sixers. Many batsmen observed that his pace was back, and he also used a lot of yorkers and slower balls through the competition. It is a pity for Bangladesh, though, that he picked up an ankle injury that has ruled him out of the tour of New Zealand.11. Rubel Hossain, 22 wickets in 15 matches (Dhaka Dynamites)Rubel had to bowl well given the usual pressure on him during the tournament, and he delivered on most occasions for the Dynamites. He was crucial in the second qualifier against the Riders, but still had those spells when he just went off the boil, especially in the death overs.
