Spurs are already brewing their next Kane in "perfect" Hotspur Way prospect

The last few years have seen seismic changes take place at Tottenham Hotspur.

The club have churned through managers who employ dramatically different tactics, signed a plethora of players with varying levels of success, and perhaps most notably, sold Harry Kane.

The former captain was the club’s all-time top goalscorer and, at the very least, the second-best striker in the Premier League, but after over a decade of service, he wanted to move on to pastures new.

Unsurprisingly, Ange Postecoglou and Co haven’t been able to replace the iconic goalscorer yet, but there is a player out on loan who could potentially be their next Kane.

How Spurs' players are doing on loan

So, while Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is out on loan this season, the deal that took him to Marseille in July included an obligation to buy at £17m, so for all intents and purposes, he is out of the picture.

Of those Spurs players in and around the first team who are still out on loan and set to return this summer, the player who’s had the most success has been Manor Solomon, who joined Leeds United in August.

Since moving to Elland Road, the 25-year-old winger has scored seven goals and provided eight assists in just 28 games, which comes out to a stellar average of a goal involvement every 1.86 games.

Bryan Gil, while not quite as prolific, is still having a decent campaign of his own away from N17, racking up a haul of four goals and three assists in 29 appearances for Girona, while Alejo Veliz and Alfie Devine have both scored four goals this season, for Espanyol and KVC Westerlo respectively.

Lastly, Ashley Phillips has become an integral player for Stoke City, starting 70% of their league games and making 25 appearances overall.

At the same time, it’s too early to make a judgement on Min-hyeok Yang’s time with Queens Park Rangers, as he’s only made four appearances thus far.

In all, the Lilywhites’ loanees are looking quite impressive this season, although there is one more player who might be the most exciting of the lot, a player who’s mirroring a part of Kane’s early career.

Loan Watch

The Spurs loanee who's emulating Kane

Before he got the chance to show his stuff on a regular basis for the first team, Kane went out on several loan moves to varying levels of success.

He played for the likes of Leicester City, Norwich City, Millwall and Leyton Orient, where he did reasonably well, scoring five goals in 902 minutes, and it’s the League One side who currently have the Spurs player who could emulate the great number nine: Jamie Donley.

Now, we appreciate the fact that a comparison such as this is quite extreme, but like the England captain, the young Englishman is starting to show his quality with the O’s.

For example, while he’s primarily played as an attacking midfielder this season, he has played as a central and second striker in the past, and more importantly than that, he has shown himself to be a real threat this year.

In 34 games for the East London outfit, totalling just 2305 minutes, the “perfect” prospect, as dubbed by Alasdair Gold, has scored six goals and provided six assists as well as forcing Stefan Ortega into an own goal in the FA Cup thanks to a brilliant shot from the halfway line.

That means the 20-year-old is currently averaging a goal involvement every 2.83 games, or every 192 minutes, which is seriously impressive for a youngster playing in the middle of the park.

Ultimately, there is an awful long way to go if Donley is to get anywhere near the level Kane did during his time with the North Londoners.

Still, if the Hotspur Way talent continues to progress the way he has this season, then there is no telling how good he may be in four or five years.

Fewer touches than Sanchez: Chelsea dud must be axed after 4/10 display

Chelsea went crashing out of the FA Cup in the fourth round, losing 2-1 to Brighton at the Amex Stadium on Saturday evening.

Despite taking a 1-0 lead after just five minutes, with Bart Verbruggen making a huge error and turning one into his own net, the Seagulls struck back early through Georginio Rutter to make it 1-1 after 12 minutes, with the eventual winner being scored by Kaoru Mitoma after 57 minutes.

Enzo Maresca made six changes to the side, with Trevoh Chalobah coming in for Levi Colwill, Malo Gusto starting at right-back ahead of Reece James, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall replacing Enzo Fernández alongside Moises Caicedo in midfield, and Pedro Neto earning a start on the right over Noni Madueke.

However, it was the other two changes that had the biggest effect on the game, with Robert Sanchez taking over from Filip Jorgensen in the net, and Christopher Nkunku replacing the injured Nicolas Jackson up top, leaving Chelsea lacking in both boxes.

Robert Sanchez's dodgy performance against Brighton

After making another poor error against Manchester City in the Premier League, Sanchez was dropped, allowing Chelsea’s summer signing Jorgensen to come into the side to face West Ham in their most recent game, winning 2-1 and the Danish shot-stopper putting in a fairly good account for himself.

But Sanchez came back into the side for this FA Cup match, which could perhaps mean the roles have been reversed between the two keepers, with Jorgensen set for a run of Premier League games now.

However, Sanchez put in another dodgy display, misplacing 13 of his 20 long ball attempts and only completing 69% of his passes, having 56 touches in the game.

The 27-year-old Spaniard only made one save, made one punch, and, of course, conceded the two goals, which is hard to blame him for on this occasion, both being good finishes from close range.

Despite the goalkeeper being a clear issue currently at Chelsea, the striker position is perhaps even more alarming, especially in the absence of Jackson as the Blues were against Brighton, starting Nkunku as more of a false nine.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Chelsea's biggest underperformer against Brighton

With Marc Guiu also out with an injury, Maresca had no choice but to start Nkunku up front, which is a position he has been playing in the UEFA Conference League this campaign anyway for the Blues, scoring 13 goals in 31 appearances across all competitions.

However, it was yet again evident that Nkunku is not a natural centre-forward, continuing to drop deep to get touches and not getting a single shot off in the entirety of the game.

In fact, the 28-year-old only had one touch in the opposition box throughout the match, again showing his inability to affect the game whilst leading the line. Nkunku’s poor performance resulted in a 4/10 match rating from football.london.

This had a knock-on effect on the team, with the wingers reluctant to put crosses into the box with no one substantial to aim at, a lack of runners in behind making the pitch more condensed for the Chelsea midfield players, and an overall lack of balance in the side.

Maresca will be hoping Jackson is back in time for their next game, facing Brighton again, this time in the Premier League in just five days’ time, otherwise, the outcome could be similar with those same problems cropping up once more. Truth be told, he must be replaced at the earliest convenience.

He lost the ball 21 times: 4/10 Chelsea dud was as bad as Nkunku v Brighton

Chelsea were poor in the FA Cup fourth round as they slumped to defeat against the Seagulls.

Gerrard to Ibrox update as Ferguson confirmed as interim Rangers manager

With Philippe Clement sacked as Rangers manager and Barry Ferguson in place until the summer, renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano has dropped a fresh update on links Steven Gerrard.

Clement sacked and replaced by former captain Ferguson

The Belgian has been under a huge amount of pressure at Ibrox for some time now, and Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at home to St Mirren was a shocking result for Rangers and the final straw for Clement, who has now officially been relieved of his duties after 16 months in charge.

The club released a statement on Sunday evening: “The club would like to put on record their sincere thanks to Philippe for his hard work and dedication during his spell in charge. A further update from the club will follow in due course.”

The Gers’ season is still alive, not least because they are still in the Europa League, and it’s now a case of riding on the emotion of former captain Ferguson to continue what could still become a memorable campaign akin to their trip to the final in 2022.

Unfortunately, Rangers have gone backwards this season in the league, with the gap between themselves and Celtic seemingly growing, highlighting the importance of bringing in the right boss this summer once Ferguson has steadied the ship.

Romano drops Gerrard to Rangers update

Writing for Give Me Sport, Romano reacted to the rumours floating around about Gerrard returning to Rangers: “At the moment nothing has been decided, so let’s keep all options open. The club is assessing options,” his report said. “Nothing direct yet with Gerrard or his camp.”

Nathan Patterson, Steven Gerrard

Opinion may be split on Gerrard returning to Rangers, with the Liverpool legend certainly doing lots right during his first stint at Ibrox, not least winning the Scottish Premiership title in 2020/21. He is the only manager to have achieved that feat for the Gers since the 2010/11 season, showing what an achievement it was, so it is easy to see why some supporters would like the idea of him coming back.

That said, there may be others who are unhappy that Gerrard decided to leave Rangers for Aston Villa back in 2021, perhaps feeling that he only ever saw them as a stepping stone in his managerial career.

Not only that, but second spells in charge can often be less successful for managers, and a chunk of the fanbase may like the idea of seeing a fresh face in the dugout.

49ers will love him: Rangers must hire "fantastic" manager who knows Wilson

As pressure mounts on Philippe Clement, the new 49ers ownership group at Rangers should look to hire “fantastic” out of work manager as replacement.

ByBen Gray Feb 24, 2025

It’s also worth stressing that Gerrard ultimately struggled at Villa, eventually being replaced by Unai Emery, who has taken them on to far better things, so the jury is still out on him a little, despite the good job he did at Rangers.

Como está o São Paulo para a abertura da janela de transferências de 2023? O vaivém do mercado no Tricolor
