Newcastle could be offered £300k-a-week star who Howe called "outstanding"

Newcastle United have established themselves as one of the Premier League’s most exciting sides under Eddie Howe, so it is no surprise that St James’ Park is becoming an intriguing draw for potential recruits.

Newcastle United's pursuit and implications of continental qualification

The Magpies have become European qualification contenders this season. However, recent Premier League defeats to Bournemouth, Fulham and Manchester City have put the spotlight on Howe amid his side’s ongoing pursuit of continental football.

Potentially, the English top-flight could be awarded an extra Champions League spot for next season, which may offer a saving grace. Still, Nottingham Forest, Manchester City, Bournemouth, Chelsea and Aston Villa will provide stiff competition in a battle stretching right to the wire.

While Newcastle’s owners, the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund, debate whether to renovate St James’ Park or if moving stadium may enhance their profile as a global institution, there is one certainty that remains in an ever-changing landscape; the club needs to keep producing success stories to attract high-calibre imports every season.

PIF now considering Newcastle move to sign "strong" £553k-p/w star for Howe

He could make a return to European football…

1 ByTom Cunningham Feb 23, 2025

Booking a place to dine at Europe’s top table again is likely to elevate their chances of landing star quality, and Howe now may have the opportunity to capitalise on the uncertain future of a renowned Premier League figure this summer.

Newcastle United could be offered chance to sign Jack Grealish

According to Chronicle Live, Newcastle United could be offered Manchester City’s Jack Grealish this summer as his long-term future at the Etihad Stadium veers further into the corridor of uncertainty.

His agency CAA Stellar Sports are reportedly exploring options for his next move and he may be available for a fraction of the fee north of £100 million paid by the Citizens to land his services back in 2021.

On the contrary, Grealish’s £300,000 per week wage packet could signify that the England international may need to take a significant paycut to move to the Magpies.

Alternatively, his former club Aston Villa alongside Inter Milan and Bayern Munich have emerged as potential suitors as his role at Manchester City continues to be called into question despite playing a major part in seven trophies making their way into the Citizens’ bulging cabinet.

Previously labelled as an “outstanding player” by Newcastle boss Howe, the 29-year-old has remained a solid if unspectacular performer under Pep Guardiola this season. Per Fotmob, Grealish has fashioned 22 chances and completed 13 successful dribbles in the Premier League circa 2024/25.

Albeit his influence has waned a little recently at Manchester City Grealish may still have plenty of years ahead of him and would offer another reliable option in the wide areas for Howe to maximise should a move to the North East materialise, and by the looks of things, a move to St James’ Park in 2025 is one to watch.

After the game, Eze was full of praise for his team-mates and their performance against one of the world's best sides.

    WHAT EZE SAID

Speaking to of the counter-attack that resulted in his goal, Eze said: "I couldn't breathe! City keep the ball so well, you have to work so hard to get anything from them. When you get in their box you have to make the chance count.

"I've come a long way. To be in this position now – it's hard to use the right words here."

He added: "This is special, I don't even know what to say. Thank God, only God could do this.

"Facing the team that's been the best in the world for years, to show that type of spirit and energy… only God."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Since his switch to Palace from QPR in 2020, Eze has become Palace's talisman and raised his performance levels with every season. His role in this Palace FA Cup run will not be forgotten by the Eagles faithful any time soon. Eze scored four goals and registered an assist in five FA Cup games this season with no goal more important than his effort on Saturday.

    WHAT NEXT FOR EZE?

The midfielder has been linked with moves away from Palace, but with the Eagles qualifying for Europa League football through this success in the cup, he may be persuaded to remain at the club. With his contract expiring in 2027, clubs may look to wrap up a bargain deal should he not renew.

He's starred with Messi: Man City make first move to sign "technical" ace

Looking to pick up where they left off in the January transfer window this summer, Manchester City have reportedly made contact in the race to sign one particular gem in the coming months.

Man City set sights on rising star

The Citizens are likely to be one of the busiest clubs in the Premier League this summer, as Pep Guardiola plans his first major overhaul since his first season in charge at the Etihad.

The rest of English football already received a glimpse of what that rebuild could look like during the January window when the likes of Omar Marmoush and Abdukodir Khusanov arrived.

Marmoush

Now, Manchester City could add to those arrivals and complete a swift and effective rebuild which should ensure that results such as this weekend’s 2-2 draw against Brighton & Hove Albion become a rarity once again.

On the incomings front, names such as Michele Di Gregorio have already been mentioned in recent reports in what could see the Citizens replace Ederson following his recent struggles.

Meanwhile, those at the Etihad have also reportedly turned their attention towards a rising star.

According to Graeme Bailey for The Boot Room, Manchester City have now made contact over potentially signing Benja Cremaschi from Inter Miami this summer, but face competition from the likes of Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur for his signature.

Man City lost "superb" star for £0, now he's worth £100m & outscoring Foden

As Phil Foden continues to endure a miserable season at Manchester City, the Sky Blues must regret losing a “superb” £100-rated superstar for free.

ByBen Gray Mar 16, 2025

The 20-year-old has played an important part for Inter Miami in the MLS this season, starting in all three of their league games with one of those coming alongside the great Lionel Messi.

Despite his age, Cremaschi already has impressive experience to his name, including at the Olympics when playing for the United States in Paris last summer.

"Technical" Cremaschi is one to watch

Ahead of what looks set to be a Premier League race for his signature, Cremaschi is undoubtedly one to watch.

At just 20 years old, the MLS star is yet to reach his peak and has crucially starred alongside several serial winners to form the foundation for a player destined for big things. Whether those big things come courtesy of a move to Manchester City remains to be seen, however.

Benja Cremaschi for Inter Miami.

The young midfielder has unsurprisingly earned plenty of praise in recent years, including from former Fulham defender Tim Ream. The American said on his podcast ‘The American Dream’ when the topic of Cremaschi’s ability came up: “He’s looked sharp. He’s technical, not afraid to get into a tackle.

“Benja and I think Kristoffer [Lund], he’s kind of settling in [too]. Obviously English is more of a second language, but both very good with their English. [Cremaschi] has been the most impressive for sure in the couple of training sessions that we’ve had.”

As Manchester City look to add youthful exuberance to an ageing squad, the arrival of a rising star in the form of Cremaschi would certainly make sense. The 20-year-old, meanwhile, should jump at the opportunity if it comes his way this summer.

Rohit wants India to be flexible, in mind and batting order

India captain says players have been given roles but need to be ready to perform different ones should the need arise

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Aug-20232:08

Moody: Flexibility, open mind needed in this day and age

Flexibility in the mind and flexibility in the middle order will be key for India to unlock their batting potential at the ODI World Cup, according to their captain Rohit Sharma.”One thing I want in this team is to make sure everyone is okay to bat anywhere,” Rohit said at a press conference to announce India’s Asia Cup squad in New Delhi. “That’s one thing we need to keep in mind. You need flexibility, guys who can step up at any position. No one should say, ‘I’m good at this position or I’m good at that position’. You want guys to be able to bat anywhere, that’s the message conveyed to every individual. Not now, but over the last three-four years.”In a sense, Rohit was reiterating the views of former India coach Ravi Shastri, who earlier in the week spoke of no player owning any one position and how even someone as senior as Virat Kohli should drop down to No. 4 if the team combination demanded it.Related

“I know it’s tough for guys on the outside to understand why a guy who bats at six is batting at four, but the message has been given. This is international sport, not club cricket, that you’re talking about. It’s not like we go to sleep giving a position for a certain player and then change it the next morning.”We say, ‘this is what we want’. You don’t want to be handicapped or stuck with one player batting in one position. Having said that, you want to get the best out of players in certain positions. All seven-eight numbers are open to anyone, that’s the message we have sent out for so many years now.”Rohit cited Axar Patel’s example to emphasise what he meant. He felt Axar is better suited to disrupt the opposition as a floater who can take the game on at any position in the batting unit. Rohit felt this skill gave him the edge over, say R Ashwin or Washington Sundar.”Where things boil down to is the batting option at No. 8 and 9,” Rohit said. “Axar, you know he’s had a good run this year, batted well in white-ball cricket. He didn’t get much opportunity in red-ball, but played well in white-ball, especially IPL. He had a few opportunities in the West Indies but couldn’t make it big, but with him being there, it gives us the option of having a left-hander who can go up the order and play spinners if required, and also create batting depth.”Rohit Sharma and Ajit Agarkar address a press conference where India’s squad for the Asia Cup was announced•AFP via Getty ImagesAjit Agarkar, India’s chairman of selectors, further clarified Rohit’s views on flexibility.”Rohit didn’t say anyone can play anywhere,” Agarkar said. “What he said is a player should be flexible in the mind. A player knows his role, where he’s going to play, which over he’s likely to bowl. A new-ball bowler will bowl with the new ball, or whether he can bowl in middle overs – those roles are set. But as the game or tournament evolves, you look at someone’s form or the team’s form, against whom you are playing, players should be flexible in the mind.”Every captain has a plan that this batter will bat here, and we will play in this specific way, but as the tournament progresses, if someone’s form is good, someone is playing well or match-ups dictate playing someone against a certain bowler, we’re talking about that kind of flexibility, which is important. That much talent is there in the team. If there’s talent that flexibility will come. It doesn’t mean role is not specified, roles are specified, you feel comfortable because of that.”

“It’s not like opener bat at eight and eight opens, we don’t do such mad things. Little bit of flexibility up and down is needed in a team.”Rohit Sharma

At this point, Rohit stepped in to clarify his comments on flexibility and why it shouldn’t be taken literally.”When I said flexibility is important, it’s not like I’m implying send the opener at No. 7 or open the batting with Hardik Pandya,” Rohit said. “Shikhar [Dhawan] and Rohit have only opened in the last seven-eight years, Kohli has batted only at three. Youngsters who come in at four-five, it’s important for them to be flexible, batting up and down.”In the last four-five years if you look, the opener has opened, No. 3 has batted at three, KL [Rahul] has batted five, Hardik six, [Ravindra] Jadeja seven. Four and five, sometimes if they move up and down, there’s no problem. That much flexibility is important. Our position too when we came in, we batted up and down, I’m talking of that flexibility. It’s not like opener bat at eight and eight opens, we don’t do such mad things. Little bit of flexibility up and down is needed in a team.”

Webster, Doran put Tasmania on top against NSW

A pair of unbeaten 68s from Beau Webster and Jake Doran has put Tasmania on top after Gabe Bell took four wickets as NSW were bowled out for 181 on day one

An unbeaten century stand from Beau Webster and Jake Doran has given Tasmania control of their Sheffield Shield match against New South Wales in Hobart.Webster and Doran were unbeaten on 68 apiece at stumps on day one after putting on 131 for the fifth wicket to wrest the momentum away from NSW on a hectic first day that featured 14 wickets.Tasmania, who are second on the Shield ladder, were 179 for 4 at stumps in reply to NSW’s 181 after the home side won the toss in overcast conditions at Bellerive Oval. The home side had slumped to 48 for 4 before Webster and Doran first blunted the visitors’ counterpunch and then put Tasmania in a solid position. It is Webster’s sixth Shield half-century this summer and he has the third-highest runs total in the competition, with 453 from five matches at an average of 47.68.He also took two wickets as NSW never quite recovered from their disastrous start. After Ryan Hackney was dismissed in the first over of the game, a poorly judged third run cost No.3 Blake Macdonald his wicket thanks to slick fielding from Brad Hope and Jordan Silk.Gabe Bell then dismissed opener Daniel Hughes to leave NSW in tatters at 9 for 3. Matthew Gilkes scored 30, while Moises Henriques reached 50 and Ollie Davies top-scored with 67 from 65 balls as the NSW middle order stemmed the early bleeding. But when Webster caught Davies to give Lawrence Neil-Smith his third wicket, NSW were 165 for 8. Bell snared 4 for 29 and Neil-Smith took 3 for 57, with the NSW innings done in just 42 overs.Jackson Bird dismissed the Tasmanian openers cheaply and Jack Nisbet made the crucial breakthrough, producing an unplayable delivery to bowl in-form No.3 Charlie Wakim for 27.That left Tasmanian four down and on the brink before Webster and Doran ensured day one belonged to the home side.

Fewer touches than Vicario: Ange must bench Spurs star after 4/10 display

Tottenham Hotspur fell to a 1-0 defeat against Manchester City last night, putting an end to their three-game unbeaten run in the Premier League.

Erling Haaland’s first-half strike was enough to secure all three points for Pep Guardiola’s side, with Ange Postecoglou needing to pick his side up after a 14th league defeat of the campaign.

The result leaves the Lilywhites down in 13th place with just 11 games remaining, needing a miracle to restore any pride after what has been a year to forget in North London.

Results prior to Wednesday's fixture.

Over recent weeks, Ange has seen numerous players return to first-team action after their respective injury lay-offs, offering the Aussie the squad depth he’s so desperately been craving.

However, he rotated his side for the visit of the defending champions, with numerous players failing to impress during the defeat at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Spurs’ disappointing performers against Man City

Winger Brennan Johnson started the clash with Pep’s men last night, maintaining his place in the eleven after making his first start in a month against Ipswich Town at the weekend.

However, the Welshman would fail to build on his two-goal display against the Tractor Boys, lucky to feature for the entirety of the contest after his ineffective display which saw him register just a single effort on goal.

He also only completed 50% of his attempted dribbles, creating just one chance for his teammates, in what was a toothless showing from the 23-year-old.

Pedro Porro was also handed a recall against City, but like Johnson, failed to capitalise on the opportunity handed his way unable to back Postecoglou’s call of starting him over Djed Spence.

The 25-year-old often struggled to get to grips with winger Jeremy Doku, easily getting shrugged off by the Belgian at one stage and unable to offer a real threat in attacking areas, completing just a single dribble.

However, despite the performances of the aforementioned duo, one other player failed to deliver last night, potentially putting his place in the side at risk ahead of the club’s next outing.

The Spurs player who dropped a 4/10 against City

After such an injury crisis over the last few months, it was inevitable that Spurs would have to bolster in January, with Ange doing just that with centre-back Kevin Danso joining from Lens.

The Austrian has since started every game at the heart of the backline, completing 81 passes in the defeat last night, the most of any player on the pitch – showcasing his positive impact after his move.

However, another January addition in the form of Mathys Tel was unable to produce a performance to remember against City, struggling in large periods to make an impact.

The Frenchman featured for 66 minutes of the meeting, only managing to register a total of 12 touches, a tally fewer than that of goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, who achieved a total of 39.

The 19-year-old also only completed four passes, whilst failing to complete any of his two attempted dribbles – coming out on the losing side of 75% of the duels he entered.

Tel was subsequently replaced by Dejan Kulusevski with just over 20 minutes to go as the hosts looked to restore parity, but the lack of attacking threat was evident throughout, with the manager making the right call in withdrawing the loanee.

As a result of his dismal showing, Tel was handed a measly 4/10 match rating by journalist Dan Kilpatrick, with one analyst dubbing his showing as “anonymous”.

Given his lack of impact, Ange could look to replace the youngster ahead of next week’s Europa League clash with AZ Alkmaar, which appears to be the Lilywhites’ final shot of securing a trophy this season.

If they are to stand a chance of getting through to the next stage, a win in the away leg will be vital, with Postecoglou needing to consider other options after Tel’s struggles last night.

Pakistan vs New Zealand World Cup warm-up game to be played behind closed doors

The ODI World Cup warm-up match between Pakistan and New Zealand, on September 29 in Hyderabad, will be played behind closed doors (without spectators in attendance) after the local police failed to provide assurance about arranging adequate security for the game. ESPNcricinfo has learned that the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) has updated the BCCI about the development. The news, first reported by the on Monday, will impact the fans who bought tickets for the match. On Monday, September 25, four days after decision was made to play behind closed doors, the BCCI announced* that spectators who purchased tickets for the game will receive a refund.”ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 warm-up match between New Zealand and Pakistan scheduled to take place in Hyderabad on 29th September will now take place behind closed doors as per the advice of the local security agencies,” the BCCI statement said. “The match in Hyderabad coincides with festivals on the day and large gatherings are expected around the city. The spectators who bought tickets for the game will receive a full refund.”There has been a question mark over the Pakistan vs New Zealand warm-up game, a day-night fixture, since the HCA was told by local police that it would struggle to meet the security demands put in place by the ICC, for World Cup matches including the warm-ups. This is because of two major religious festivals, which take place around the same date as the match and involve large crowd gatherings.Related

K Durga Prasad, who assists in running the HCA, confirmed that security was a factor behind the decision. “The BCCI is expected to take call whether the warm-up game, between Pakistan and New Zealand on September 29 in Hyderabad, will be a closed affair or not in view of the concerns expressed by the authorities to provide security as it clashed with the lord Ganesh idols immersion,” he said. The HCA had updated the BCCI recently about the issue, but was confident that it would conduct the match on schedule by coming up with a back-up plan in case the match date wasn’t changed. With the tickets sold and the broadcast plans set in stone, it was not possible to shift the match date.Earlier in August, Hyderabad police had expressed concerns over security arrangements following a tweak in the original schedule, which led to the city hosting back-to-back matches on October 9 and 10. It was a fallout of as many as nine fixtures from the original schedule being juggled once the India vs Pakistan match had to be brought forward by a day – October 15 to October 14 – as it coincided with the first day of the festival of Navratri. The HCA aside, the Cricket association of Bengal (CAB) too had requested the BCCI to reschedule a fixture in November as it clashed with the festival of Kali Pujo. In a letter to the board, the CAB had requested for the game – England vs Pakistan on November 12 – to be played a day earlier. In it’s response, the BCCI accommodated the request as part of its rescheduling of nine matches.Hyderabad is one of three venues, along with Thiruvananthapuram and Guwahati, that will host the warm-up segment of the tournament, to be played between September 29 and October 3, before the tournament proper starts on October 5.September 25, GMT 1430 The story was updated after the BCCI announced it would refund spectators who had purchased tickets for the match.

“Well, maybe,” Griezmann said in an interview with Sports Illustrated about the Club World Cup. “We’re playing two games in Los Angeles, at the Rose Bowl. He might come; he’s certainly invited, and we’d like to welcome him to one of our training sessions. Why not?”

Contact made: Chelsea now make first move to sign £42m "freak technician"

da 888casino: Chelsea have now made contact over the signing of a defender, having stepped up their interest in recent weeks, but there may be competition for his signature from one of their London rivals, according to a report.

Blues keen to strengthen in defence

da dobrowin: The Blues have set their sights on multiple defenders ahead of the summer transfer window, with Flamengo right-back Wesley Franca now emerging as a target, having held talks over a deal for the Brazilian in recent days.

On the opposite side of the backline, Enzo Maresca’s side could look to bring in Sunderland left-back Dennis Cirkin, having started to work on a deal, though there is set to be stiff competition for his signature from a number of Premier League clubs.

Maresca is clearly keen to bolster his options at full-back, and the manager is also driving a move for Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, who could be brought in as a replacement for Robert Sanchez.

Signing a new goalkeeper may be an important task this summer given the catalogue of errors Sanchez has made this season, but there is also a desire to strengthen in the centre-back department.

According to a report from TEAMtalk, Chelsea have now made contact over the signing of Feyenoord’s David Hancko, having stepped up their interest in the centre-back over the past few weeks.

However, there may be competition for Hancko’s signature, with Tottenham ramping up their interest of late, while Atlético Madrid and Juventus are also named as potential suitors – and he is said to be enticed by the idea of joining the Italian club.

Feyenoord would be willing to sanction the defender’s departure for £42m this summer, making him a relatively affordable option should the Blues choose to formalise their interest in the summer.

"Freak technician" Hancko could be a solid signing

The Feyenoord star has received high praise from freelance scout Ben Mattinson, who has lauded him for his ability to drive the ball forward from defence.

The former Sparta Prague man’s attacking ability is underlined by his impressive goal and assist record in the league over the past five seasons.

Journalist Diederik de Groot has also described the Slovakia international as the “best defender” he’s ever seen at Feyenoord, and he has been in impressive form this season, emerging as one of the most consistent performers in the squad.

Hancko has certainly earned the chance to prove himself in the Premier League, and a £42m fee seems reasonable, so Chelsea should continue to monitor his performances before potentially launching a bid in the summer.
