Rangers can sign £11m+ star for half price with 49ers aware of transfer

da heads bet: Rangers can sign a star player for just over £5m in the coming months, and prospective new owners the 49ers are aware of a deal.

49ers plans for Rangers after agreeing a deal in principle

da dobrowin: It promises to be a busy few months both on and off the pitch at Ibrox, with interim manager Barry Ferguson looking to take Rangers to the Europa League final in Bilbao.

Ferguson, who has already got the better of Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce, will soon turn his attention to a quarter-final with Athletic Club.

The Scot appears to be impressing in caretaker charge and also guided Rangers to a 3-2 win at Celtic prior to the international break. Ferguson is keen on taking the Rangers job on a permanent basis, according to his older brother Derek, whereas Lee McCulloch has also backed the ex-midfielder to get the role on a permanent basis.

Meanwhile, the 49ers Enterprises have agreed a deal in principle to take over in Glasgow and are hopeful all the relative paperwork will be completed ahead of the 2025/26 season.

A concern for the Gers…

ByTom Cunningham Mar 25, 2025

Reports have suggested that the 49ers may back with a £20-25million budget this summer, once a takeover is completed.

One of their first player moves could be to make Vaclav Cerny’s loan into a permanent transfer. Recent reports claimed that a full-time deal could cost around £8m, however, a new update from reliable journalist Keith Jackson has stated it could be less than that.

Rangers can sign Cerny for half price £5.5m with deadline set

As per a story for The Daily Record, Jackson revealed that Rangers have the chance to sign Cerny for just £5.5m from Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg. The option was included in the loan deal that brought Cerny to Ibrox, and Rangers have a deadline until before the end of May.

Vaclav Cerny

The 49ers are aware of the urgency around Cerny’s contractual situation, with the winger attracting interest around Europe as a result of his impressive performances in Scotland.

Should Rangers not sign the 27-year-old for £5.5m, it is expected that Cerny’s ‘price tag could more than double’ to £11m+. It looks as if a £5.5m deal is a no-brainer for everyone involved at Ibrox, and it appears as if Cerny himself is also keen on a transfer.

Wellington rain leaves New Zealand waiting to decide on fourth bowler

“The majority of the team is settled,” Southee said about the final XI

Alex Malcolm28-Feb-2024New Zealand will make a decision just before the toss as to whether they will pick a fourth seamer in Scott Kuggeleijn or a specialist spinner in Mitchell Santner for the first Test against Australia at the Basin Reserve after Wednesday’s rain meant the pitch remained under covers all day.Opener Devon Conway was ruled out on Wednesday morning due to his thumb injury with Will Young retaining his place in the Test XI and moving to the top of the order to open alongside Tom Latham. Daryl Mitchell slots back into No. 5 after missing the second Test against South Africa with a foot issue.Captain Tim Southee, Matt Henry and William O’Rourke will be the three seamers after their success against South Africa, but a decision is yet to be made on the fourth bowler. Southee did not get a look at the pitch on Wednesday due to the persistent Wellington rain and said a decision on the final XI would wait until Thursday morning.Related

  • Conway ruled out of opening Test against Australia

  • Neil Wagner retires from international cricket

“The majority of the team is settled,” he said. “We’ll have one final look obviously with the weather around and one final decision on whether an extra seamer or a spinner will play, but obviously with Devon Conway’s unfortunate injury Will Young comes in and will open the batting.”Injuries are part of cricket. But it also presents opportunities for other people. Will Young’s coming off 60-odd not out in the Test in Hamilton against South Africa.”New Zealand played four fast bowlers in their last Test in Hamilton with Neil Wagner the fourth seamer in that XI but he has since announced his retirement after being told he would not be selected in this series against Australia.New Zealand coach Gary Stead admitted on Tuesday that not picking a specialist spinner in Hamilton was a mistake after South Africa offspinner Dane Piedt took eight wickets for the match while Rachin Ravindra bagged four and Glenn Phillips two, despite O’Rourke claiming nine on debut to be named Player of the Match.Since the start of 2000, spin bowlers have averaged 40.84 at the Basin with the pace bowlers averaging 31.93. Southee said the presence of Ravindra and Phillips in the top six does give him some confidence that they have spin bowling options if they were to pick four seamers.”Yeah [it does], and I think you throw in Daryl Mitchell as well as another bowling option,” Southee said. “It’s just great to have those guys, like the Australian side have the likes of Cam Green and Mitch Marsh. It helps to balance the side when you’ve got guys in the in the top seven that are able to help out with the ball as well.”Southee said he was excited to see O’Rourke unleashed at Australia’s top order after an outstanding performance on Test debut against South Africa.”I think what we saw in Hamilton was something special from a young guy,” Southee said. “He’s shown glimpses and there’s been something about him. We’ve obviously watched him closely over the last couple of years and he’s got a lot of attributes that we liked and we saw that in his Test debut and it’s exciting to see those guys make that transition from domestic cricket to international cricket and I’m sure he’ll have a long future at the highest level.”There was some surprise within the Australian camp at Wagner’s retirement given his success against Australia’s new opener Steven Smith. Wagner claimed Smith five times in Test cricket at a cost of just 16 runs apiece, including four times in the most recent series the two sides played in 2019-20 with a barrage of short-pitched bowling and a heavy set leg-side field.O’Rourke has the pace and steep bounce to cause Smith and others similar issues on the back foot but Southee said there will be no mandate for any of his newly-formed attack to follow Wagner’s methods against Australia’s best batter.”He’s a quality player,” Southee said. “He’s obviously had a phenomenal record and now he’s moved to the top.”But I think it comes back to the individuals that we select. Obviously, Neil was extremely good at the role that he played. And he had a great tour to Australia a few years back and a lot of success against Steve. I guess you look at the type of bowlers that we will select and the way that they like to operate and all three or four bowlers will be different in the way they operate.”

Saved by Fernandes: Amorim must drop 5/10 Man Utd star who lost 100% duels

It was an evening for celebration. Manchester United defeated Leicester City 3-0 with relative ease in the Premier League. While they remain 13th, Ruben Amorim’s side are starting to rediscover their touch.

Or, perhaps, unearth new qualities for the first time, with Amorim’s teachings slowly seeping in by some process of osmosis.

Manchester United celebrate after beating Leicester

With a Europa League quarter-final tie awaiting against French club Lyon after the looming international break, hope has been restored that, just like last year, something can be salvaged from this dreary campaign.

And of course, there was one man, quite literally, who was at the centre of all good at Leicester’s King Power Stadium. Bruno Fernandes truly is a marvel.

Bruno Fernandes' performance at Leicester

In a deeper berth, Fernandes went about his business impeccably in midfield, allowing the likes of Rasmus Hojlund and Alejandro Garnacho to take the limelight while pulling the strings in the middle.

Diogo Dalot and Bruno Fernandes celebrate

The captain was the architect, creating both of his younger peers’ goals before getting in on the action himself in the late stages, getting his name on the scoresheet to seal the rousing victory.

Football is more than just metrics, but the Portugal star certainly gave a good statistical account of himself, dominating a range of different areas to ensure his squad take off for an international sojourn with spirits high and belief higher still.

However, not everyone shared Bruno’s individual success, with Christian Eriksen struggling to impress from a more advanced position.

Why Amorim must drop Christian Eriksen

Eriksen has been a diligent servant since joining Old Trafford’s cause on a free transfer in 2022, but at 33 he looks past his best and will depart when his contract expires in the summer.

Manchester United's Christian Eriksen

Though Amorim will enjoy three points, there’s little doubt the experienced Dane’s performance will linger in his mind, making any number of misplaced passes early on and lacking the incisiveness or athleticism that a younger and hungrier ball-carrier could have enjoyed in his position to the left of Hojlund.

Though he hit the post with a stunning effort from range ran about, Eriksen was handed a 5/10 rating by GOAL and didn’t prove himself as a standout in the Man United side, failing to win a single duel while also being thwarted with both attempted dribbles.

Though Eriksen saw off the match with a bit more polish and consistency, he’s got to be aware he may be among the first names for the chopping block this summer.

INEOS have shown a ruthless streak in recent weeks, and they may want to act on that with this one. Eriksen is a household Premier League name, but he’s no longer able to produce the goods for the Reds, and needs to be axed this summer.

Farke has found Leeds' new Pablo Hernandez & it's not Aaronson

Leeds United is currently the home to various talents who have made their names across Europe before moving to Elland Road over the last couple of seasons.

Brenden Aaronson is just one player who cost big money to secure a move for his signature, costing a fee in the region of £25m during their final season in the Premier League back in 2022/23.

The American has so far failed to demonstrate why the hierarchy forked out such a hefty fee for his signature, struggling to make a real impact under Daniel Farke in recent weeks.

Whilst he scored the opener against Swansea City last weekend, it was only his second goal contribution of the calendar year, struggling to produce any tangible results in their hunt for Championship promotion.

He’s since been unable to match the levels produced by one player who starred in Yorkshire after his own transfer from the Swans multiple years ago.

Pablo Hernandez’s stats for Leeds United

Over the years, Leeds has been the home to countless icons, with Pablo Hernandez undoubtedly cementing himself as a modern-day hero for his heroics at Elland Road.

The Spaniard originally moved on loan from Swansea back in 2016/17, before joining permanently in the January of that campaign after impressing in the first half of the season.

Former Leeds winger Pablo Hernandez.

Such a move would be the springboard for his success with the Whites, with Hernandez going on to register 36 goals and 41 assists from 175 outings, helping the club lift the Championship title at the close of the 2019/20 campaign.

He was a pivotal part of Marcelo Bielsa’s side that season, remaining a key member of the squad the following year as the club ended their long wait for Premier League football.

Whilst he left the club back in 2021, current boss Farke already has his own version of the fan-favourite, playing a vital role in their own ambitions of returning to the top flight.

The player who’s become Farke’s own Hernandez at Leeds

The plethora of attacking talent on the books at Leeds has contributed to their phenomenal attacking record, which has seen them score 78 times in the league this season – by far the highest tally in the division.

Joel Piroe has been central to such a record, netting 15 league goals to date, a tally which is the highest within the current first-team squad – producing key goals at various moments.

The Dutchman arrived in a £10m deal from Swansea back in the summer of 2023, following in Hernandez’s footsteps in joining from the Welsh outfit and having an immediate impact in Yorkshire.

The similarities to Hernandez continue, with the 25-year-old also able to feature in the number ten role, as seen in certain matches this season, with the “superb” star, as dubbed by one analyst, key to the club’s recent success.

During his final Championship campaign in Yorkshire, the Spaniard notched a total of 18 combined goals and assists back in 2019/20 – cementing himself as a key member of Bielsa’s squad.

Piroe has already registered a combined 21 contributions with seven matches remaining this campaign, with any hope of securing promotion potentially down to whether he can continue to produce the goods in the final third.

He’s been subject to criticism in recent times, but it’s safe to say the club wouldn’t be in this current position without his goals, certainly playing a key role in their promotion ambitions.

Whilst it’s unclear whether he will be able to cut it in the Premier League, Piroe has a huge job to catapult the side into the top flight between now and the end of the season.

His goals could provide the difference over the next couple of weeks, with the Dutchman able to cement his place in the Whites’ history books should he produce the goods and fire them back to England’s top-division.

He left in 2021: Chelsea must rue selling amazing Nkunku upgrade for £34m

Over the years, Chelsea Football Club has been the home to countless centre-forwards who have captured the hearts of the fanbase with their impressive displays on the pitch.

Eidur Gudjohnsen featured for the Blues over a six-year period, amassing over 250 appearances, but catching the eye with his finishing ability in the final third.

The former Iceland international netted 78 times during his time at Stamford Bridge, helping the club win multiple Premier League titles along the way.

He wasn’t the only talisman to impress during his time as a player, with Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink scoring 87 times in 177 games in West London, cementing his own place in the club’s history books.

However, fast-forward to 2025, the club have lacked that focal point under Enzo Maresca, with the Italian yet to make his own stamp on the forward line since his summer appointment.

Christopher Nkunku’s stats for Chelsea in 2024/25

With Nicolas Jackson currently on the treatment table, Maresca has relied upon Frenchman Christopher Nkunku to lead the line for Chelsea over the past couple of weeks.

The 27-year-old has struggled for regular minutes after his £52m move from RB Leipzig in 2023, with an ACL injury halting his progress for the majority of last season.

Christopher Nkunku in action for Chelsea

However, he’s been handed multiple starts over the last couple of weeks, looking to fill the void left by the Senegalese international after his recent injury setback.

Nkunku has started each of the last four outings across all competitions, registering one goal and one assist, with both of his contributions coming in the recent 4-0 thrashing of Southampton.

He’s offered a temporary solution to the forward position, which the manager has desperately tried to bolster during his two transfer windows since his appointment.

However, the club may have been better off keeping hold of one player who certainly would’ve offered the focal point the Italian has craved in recent months.

The Nkunku upgrade that Chelsea sold back in 2021

Off the back of winning the Champions League back in 2020/21, Chelsea made some big-money investments, which saw numerous players depart from the Bridge.

tammy-abraham-as-roma-chelsea-transfer-gossip-pochettino-torres-falcao-higuain

Romelu Lukaku arrived in a £97.5m deal from Inter Milan, which resulted in Tammy Abraham leaving in a £34m deal to join Serie A side Roma, ending his long-standing affiliation with his boyhood club.

Whilst it was a superb fee to receive for an academy graduate, they parted ways with an impressive talent who has continued his goal-scoring form away from West London.

Abraham, who’s currently spending the season on loan at AC Milan, has registered 45 goals since his big-money departure, with eight of which coming during the ongoing campaign.

When comparing his underlying stats to those of Nkunku, the Englishman has outperformed the current first-team star, highlighting the mistake the Blues made in allowing him to leave the club.

Abraham, who’s previously been labelled “sensational” by commentator Matteo Bonetti, has achieved a higher shot-on-target accuracy rate this season whilst also winning more of the aerials he’s entered.

He’s also registered a higher xG to date, finding himself in better opportunities to score than the Frenchman, offering that out and out presence they’ve desired over the past couple of months.

Given his form in Italy, the club certainly may have offloaded the 27-year-old too prematurely, having the tools to offer the needed focal point Maresca craves in West London.

However, unfortunately for the Blues, he will remain a case of what could’ve been had they kept hold of him, with Abraham thriving away from his boyhood with the added minutes he’s received after departing in 2021.

Dushmantha Chameera will miss Sri Lanka’s second ODI against Afghanistan, with Asitha Fernando drafted into the squad as his replacement.Chameera had limped off midway through his eighth over during Sri Lanka’s 42-run victory in the first ODI. He had picked up two wickets at the time but could not continue after that. It has now been confirmed that he injured his left quadriceps. It is understood the injury is not related to any of his previous injuries; last year he had missed a chunk of Sri Lanka’s games with a torn pectoral muscle, and prior to that he had undergone surgery for an ankle injury. The extent of the current injury is unknown. The 32-year-old fast bowler underwent a scan following Friday’s game, the results of which have been sent to a specialist in the UK for consultation.”He’s feeling better now, but we won’t know for sure the exact nature of his injury until we hear back from the specialist,” Sri Lanka’s team manager Mahinda Halangoda told ESPNcricinfo.Fernando, his replacement in the squad, last played an ODI in November 2022, also against Afghanistan. He has played five ODIs in all, picking up the solitary wicket. However, he has impressed in Tests, most recently against Afghanistan when he picked up six wickets in the match to help Sri Lanka on their way to victory.
