Litton toasts 'big achievement for Bangladesh cricket'; Mehidy dedicates win to student protestors

“Before we came, we were looking to win here. Everyone did their job and we’re very happy,” says captain Shanto after historic 2-0 sweep in Pakistan

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Sep-2024There were useful contributions from across the XI, but Bangladesh’s win in the second Test against Pakistan was orchestrated by their youngsters. Especially Hasan Mahmud and Nahid Rana, 24 and 21 respectively, who picked up nine wickets between them in the second innings to set up the 185-run chase. “They wanted to win, that was very important,” Najmul Hossain Shanto, the Bangladesh captain, said after the win when asked about his young pace duo.”As a fast bowler, I was looking for wickets, and the boys, our effort [with the ball], we really deserved it,” Mahmud said. “You have to take advantage [of conditions] as fast bowlers, and you’ve got to keep working hard together, and especially in red-ball cricket, it’s important to get the benefit from your fast bowlers as well as spinners, all together. It was a valiant effort.”Mahmud and Rana set the pulse racing, as fast bowlers do when they get the better of batters, repeatedly, but the match and series awards went to two more experienced men. Litton Das got the match award for his 138 in the first innings. Mehidy Hasan Miraz got the series award for his tally of 155 runs and ten wickets. In this Test, the two of them came to the middle in the first innings when Bangladesh were 26 for 6 in reply to Pakistan’s 274. Litton scored 138 from No. 7 and Mehidy 78 from No. 8 to take Bangladesh to 262, keeping the match on an even footing.Related

“It’s a big achievement by the Bangladesh cricket team. I am part of this, so I am very happy,” Litton said. “When me and Miraz [were] batting, the credit actually goes to Miraz, because the way he faced 20 balls, and [if he] hits five or six fours, the game will be easier. We just had conversations like this. They had good momentum. We had to kill that momentum. And let’s see what happens next. And after lunch, we just felt free and just went and batted.”After that stand with Mehidy, Litton had another partnership with Mahmud, of 69 runs, in which Mahmud contributed 13 but faced 51 balls.”When Hasan came, I didn’t have any scoring opportunities, because all the fielders were out,” Litton said. “So I took my time and thought I had to play the over, not the ramp or anything; I just was thinking how many overs I can play.”Mahmud and Rana took over after that. The Bangladesh fast-bowling duo put on perhaps their finest display, as the two young men, with Taskin Ahmed for company, put their team on course for victory, and history.”Very proud. Very young group, in terms of the number of games they have played. Probably not the kind of wickets we were expecting when we were talking about scouting for Pakistan. But this group has improved every Test and showed some good control second innings particularly, so very proud,” Andre Adams, the bowling coach, said.Shanto summed it up when collecting the trophy, and remembered to mention the two opening batters, Shadman Islam, who starred in the first Test, and Zakir Hasan, who gave them a fast start in the chase.”It means a lot, can’t express with words. Really happy. Before we came, we were looking to win here. Everyone did their job. Very happy,” Shanto said. [Mahmud and Rana] were very impressive. Most important was their work ethic. The way they did their work in the recent past. That’s why they got the results. They wanted to win. That was very important for our team.”The way Shadman batted, the 93 innings, and this innings, the way Zakir approached the innings, the momentum came to us.”Litton Das’s century was his second in an away Test•AFP/Getty Images

Mehidy dedicates Player-of-the-Series award to student protestors

This series took place not long after the student protests in Bangladesh, which led to the ouster of the Sheikh Hasina government and widespread violence subsequently, leading to many deaths. The Bangladesh cricket team travelled to Pakistan earlier than scheduled to get in some practice, which they were unable to back home. The shadow of the events back home stayed with the team, with Shakib Al Hasan, their star player and also a member of parliament of Hasina’s Awami League party, being named with 146 others in a political murder case.”You know there have been problems in Bangladesh – I dedicate this award to the student protestors who were martyred,” Mehidy said when accepting his Player-of-the-Series award. “A rickshaw-puller was hurt in the violence, and eventually died. I want to gift this award to his family.”Adams took charge only in February this year, and when asked what the win meant to the people back in Bangladesh, said, “I don’t know what it means to all of Bangladesh, but I know Bangladesh is a very proud nation, so we are incredibly happy with these results given the turmoil over the last couple of months.”We were there at the time, and it was pretty scary. But we’re happy that things are returning to normal.”

Sky Sports: Burnley set to sign 25 y/o after promotion in new £8m update

Burnley are now set to sign an “outstanding” player in a new £8 million update after promotion to the Premier League, according to a Sky Sports reporter.

Burnley seal promotion to the Premier League

The Clarets have managed to live up to expectations and seal their return to the Premier League at the first time of asking. A 2-1 win over Watford and a 2-1 win over Sheffield United during the Easter weekend saw Burnley secure promotion at the expense of the Blades, who have been fighting them and Leeds United for the top two spots in the Championship.

Burnley ace tipped to be axed and won't get to play in the Premier League

Would this be the right decision?

ByHenry Jackson Apr 22, 2025

Burnley’s promotion was confirmed on Monday night after they beat the Blades, and manager Scott Parker paid a significant tribute to his side and how hard they have worked to secure promotion.

Parker told BBC Radio Lancashire: “The ambition and the target at the start of the season was to get back to the Premier League, and we’ve managed to do that, so I’m hugely proud of the squad.

“It’s come down to real, pure commitment from every one of the players, their dedication and the sacrifice that they’ve made, that leads us to this point. In this moment, I explained to the lads, that there is emotion from me because I see the commitment that everyone has brought.

“We live in a world where you win, or you lose, and you get judged, and at the end of the season you’re either promoted or not, and that’s how quickly people will judge it. I‘m just delighted all that work, all that effort, all that sacrifice has been worth it and people can see it. The facts are if you don’t get promoted, people can see it.”

Burnley set to sign 25 y/o in new £8m update – Sky Sports

As the Clarets’ return to England’s top tier is now confirmed, there is now a fresh update on the future of a player who has been key for the Lancashire side this season. According to Sky Sports’ Mark McAdam, Burnley are set to sign Jaidon Anthony from AFC Bournemouth in a deal now worth £8 million.

The 25-year-old joined Burnley on a season-long loan deal from the Cherries last summer, and the Clarets had a way of making the deal a permanent switch. McAdam states that Burnley will now pay £8 million to sign Anthony, instead of the £10m that was reported last year as an obligation with promotion.

Anthony, who has been dubbed “outstanding” by football writer Josh Wyatt for his recent performance against Plymouth Argyle, has scored seven goals and assisted seven in 41 league games this season, as he’s been a key performer in Parker’s side.

Injury rules Harleen Deol out of the remainder of WPL 2024

Bharti Fulmali, who played two T20Is in 2019, has been called up as her replacement

ESPNcricinfo staff07-Mar-2024Gujarat Giants batter Harleen Deol has been ruled out of the rest of the WPL 2024 because of the injury she picked up in the early stages of the tournament. She has been replaced in the squad by batter Bharti Fulmali.Deol injured her knee during Giants’ third group-stage match, against UP Warriorz in Bengaluru. Stationed at sweeper cover, she raced to her right to intercept a ball in the first over of Warriorz’s innings, and immediately clutched her left knee. She limped off the field and has not been seen in action since. She didn’t have a great time of it in WPL 2024 anyway. Deol batted at No. 3 in Giants’ season opener, where she fell for 8. In the second game, she was slotted in as an opener where she scored 22 off 31 balls. For the match against Warriorz, she was back at No. 3, where she managed 18 off 24.Related

She was also part of the Trailblazers squad in the Women’s T20 Challenge, which preceded the WPL.Deol’s absence adds to Giants’ injury woes. They lost uncapped fast bowler Kashvee Gautam even before the tournament began, while Australia’s Lauren Cheatle had to withdraw after undergoing a medical procedure. In addition, they have been without their vice-captain Sneh Rana for the last two matches. When asked about Rana’s injury status at the end of Giants’ league game against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Wednesday, captain Beth Mooney said she did not have much of an idea.Giants, currently at the bottom of the table, had a torrid start to their tournament, losing the first four matches, but they turned a corner in their last game against RCB, picking a win by 19 runs in Delhi. They next play Mumbai Indians on March 9 in Delhi.

Willey blitz helps Northamptonshire cruise to first Trent Bridge win

Zaib, Scrimshaw scuttle Notts before visiting captain leads charge to small target

ECB Reporters Network31-May-2024Skipper David Willey smashed seven sixes and seven fours in a 34-ball 79 as Northamptonshire Steelbacks made it two Vitality Blast wins from two with a crushing eight-wicket win over Notts Outlaws. After bowling Outlaws out for 154, Steelbacks knocked off their target with a commanding 40 balls to spare, South African opener Matthew Breetzke hitting the winning boundary in a 30-ball unbeaten 51. Northamptonshire had never won at Trent Bridge in seven previous visits in the shortest format.Outlaws had appeared set for a substantial score after building on a 63-run powerplay to be 104 for 1 after 10 overs, new skipper Joe Clarke and Outlaws debutant Jack Haynes having shared a 95-run partnership from 58 balls. But Clarke fell for 48 and Haynes for 51 and the home side lost their last nine wickets for 50 in 9.2 overs.Left-arm spinner Saif Zaib – only an occasional bowler in this format – took a T20 career-best 3 for 12 in three overs, with 6ft 7ins pace bowler George Scrimshaw claiming three for 16 from 14 balls.Asked to bat first, Outlaws lost Alex Hales in the second over, caught behind after making room to cut Raphy Weatherall, but raced to 63 for 1 in the opening six nonetheless, Clarke hammering two sixes and Haynes another amid a rush of boundaries. The second-wicket pair had added 95 by the end of the 10th over before they were stopped in their tracks by left-arm spinner Saif Zaib – the seventh bowler used by David Willey – as Clarke was caught by off-side sweeper Ricardo Vasconcelos for 48 off 30 balls.A brilliant piece of fielding by Willey from mid-off then ran out Will Young and when Tom Moores holed out to long-on for 9 Outlaws had stumbled from 104 for 1 to 117 for 4 in three overs, with the scoring rate being dragged back for good measure by the slower bowlers. The Northamptonshire fightback continued with Zaib striking twice in his second over as Haynes was caught at wide long-on and Matt Montgomery was bowled sweeping.Willey re-entered the attack to bowl Calvin Harrison off an inside edge before the unravelling continued thanks to two in two by George Scrimshaw as Lyndon James was out via a steepling catch and Dillon Pennington leg before. Scrimshaw wrapped things up by having Olly Stone caught behind as Outlaws failed even to bat out the full 20 overs. The early wicket of Vasconcelos, caught at slip as a scoop went badly wrong, lifted home spirits momentarily but they had fallen flat by the end of the powerplay, with Steelbacks ahead at 68 for 1 after the sixth over saw Willey hammer his one-time Northamptonshire team-mate Stone for 4-4-6-4-4-1, before going 6-2-4 off legspinner Harrison’s first three deliveries to complete a 21-ball fifty.Willey’s explosive innings continued with four more huge sixes off the first four balls of Harrison’s second over. The left-hander clearly had it in mind to go for a full set but his luck ran out next ball, which he mistimed just enough for it to drop into the hands of James at long-off.Nonetheless, with opener Breetzke, who faced only 20 balls in the opening 10 overs, at last getting a look-in to clear the rope off Stone, Steelbacks reached the halfway point needing just 35 more for victory. As it was, it took them only another 20 balls to get the job done, Breetzke and Ravi Bopara picking up two more maximums each before the former lofted Montgomery’s offspin through long-off for the winning boundary, completing his maiden Outlaws half-century in the process.

Hamza then deceived Shadab with sharp bounce and found the outside edge of the bat before Haider Ali (26*) and Ashraf (12*) sealed the win for United.Earlier, Masood’s struggling first season as Kings skipper continued as he tried to flick Ashraf, and Imad Wasim took a brilliant running catch over his shoulder at short third. Masood has scored only 134 runs in eight innings without a half-century.Seifert couldn’t accelerate against pace and spin before Munro took another brilliant catch as veteran Shoaib Malik (1) and Mohammad Nawaz (5) also got dismissed while going for big shots.Top-scorer Kieron Pollard (39) and James Vince (29) shared a 58-run stand before Mills broke through as he had Vince caught behind off a delivery that seamed away from the Englishman.Pollard, who hit three sixes and three fours, also gave a skier to Ashraf at deep third in the 18th over as United kept picking wickets to restrict Kings in the death overs.

Farke has found Leeds' new Pablo Hernandez & it's not Aaronson

Leeds United is currently the home to various talents who have made their names across Europe before moving to Elland Road over the last couple of seasons.

Brenden Aaronson is just one player who cost big money to secure a move for his signature, costing a fee in the region of £25m during their final season in the Premier League back in 2022/23.

The American has so far failed to demonstrate why the hierarchy forked out such a hefty fee for his signature, struggling to make a real impact under Daniel Farke in recent weeks.

Whilst he scored the opener against Swansea City last weekend, it was only his second goal contribution of the calendar year, struggling to produce any tangible results in their hunt for Championship promotion.

He’s since been unable to match the levels produced by one player who starred in Yorkshire after his own transfer from the Swans multiple years ago.

Pablo Hernandez’s stats for Leeds United

Over the years, Leeds has been the home to countless icons, with Pablo Hernandez undoubtedly cementing himself as a modern-day hero for his heroics at Elland Road.

The Spaniard originally moved on loan from Swansea back in 2016/17, before joining permanently in the January of that campaign after impressing in the first half of the season.

Former Leeds winger Pablo Hernandez.

Such a move would be the springboard for his success with the Whites, with Hernandez going on to register 36 goals and 41 assists from 175 outings, helping the club lift the Championship title at the close of the 2019/20 campaign.

He was a pivotal part of Marcelo Bielsa’s side that season, remaining a key member of the squad the following year as the club ended their long wait for Premier League football.

Whilst he left the club back in 2021, current boss Farke already has his own version of the fan-favourite, playing a vital role in their own ambitions of returning to the top flight.

The player who’s become Farke’s own Hernandez at Leeds

The plethora of attacking talent on the books at Leeds has contributed to their phenomenal attacking record, which has seen them score 78 times in the league this season – by far the highest tally in the division.

Joel Piroe has been central to such a record, netting 15 league goals to date, a tally which is the highest within the current first-team squad – producing key goals at various moments.

The Dutchman arrived in a £10m deal from Swansea back in the summer of 2023, following in Hernandez’s footsteps in joining from the Welsh outfit and having an immediate impact in Yorkshire.

The similarities to Hernandez continue, with the 25-year-old also able to feature in the number ten role, as seen in certain matches this season, with the “superb” star, as dubbed by one analyst, key to the club’s recent success.

During his final Championship campaign in Yorkshire, the Spaniard notched a total of 18 combined goals and assists back in 2019/20 – cementing himself as a key member of Bielsa’s squad.

Piroe has already registered a combined 21 contributions with seven matches remaining this campaign, with any hope of securing promotion potentially down to whether he can continue to produce the goods in the final third.

He’s been subject to criticism in recent times, but it’s safe to say the club wouldn’t be in this current position without his goals, certainly playing a key role in their promotion ambitions.

Whilst it’s unclear whether he will be able to cut it in the Premier League, Piroe has a huge job to catapult the side into the top flight between now and the end of the season.

His goals could provide the difference over the next couple of weeks, with the Dutchman able to cement his place in the Whites’ history books should he produce the goods and fire them back to England’s top-division.

The dream XI FSG could build at Liverpool: £150m star signs & no Trent

Last summer, Jurgen Klopp left us.

In his place, Arne Slot. Feyenoord had enjoyed back-to-back trophy-winning campaigns with the shrewd tactician at their helm, winning the Dutch Eredivisie before claiming the KVNB Cup, which is the equivalent of the FA Cup.

Klopp’s decision to step down from his job as Liverpool manager after nearly nine years was a tough pill to swallow. Merseyside went into a state of mourning (or a state of jubilation, if you approach it from a Blue perspective).

Mostly everyone expected Liverpool’s empire to collapse, but they have prospered under a new wing, storming through the 2024/25 Premier League season to establish a 12-point lead at the top.

It couldn’t have gone any better on the league front, but FSG know thunder rumbles in the background, with a spate of problems lining up to disrupt Slot’s project come summer.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot

Problems need solutions, and Liverpool are rather good at finding them in places others can’t. Some superstars may leave this summer, but fresh faces will join the Reds cause.

Let’s reserve judgement until next season’s well underway. How many times have FSG pulled it off in recent windows?

1 GK – Alisson Becker

Alisson

It feels like the spot between the sticks shouldn’t be contentious. But oh how it is.

Alisson Becker is a phenomenon, lauded as “the best goalkeeper in the world” by Slot, but Liverpool have signed Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia for £29m. He’s replacing the outgoing Caoimhin Kelleher, and he wants top spot.

Two high-level keepers. Just how FSG like it. There could be worse problems to deal with. And in fairness, there are at that.

2 RB – Jeremie Frimpong

Bayer Leverkusen star Jeremie Frimpong.

We’re going to say it. Sorry, but it’s growing increasingly probable that Trent Alexander-Arnold is going to sign for Real Madrid when his contract expires at the end of the season. Liverpool have Conor Bradley, but they’ll need more depth and Jeremie Frimpong might just be the man for the job.

Recent reports suggest Liverpool are getting ready to make their proposal for the Bayer Leverkusen invincible, who has a €40m (£34m) release clause.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Devastating in attack – The United Stand’s Beth Tucker has dubbed him a “monster in the final third” – and one of the fastest defenders in the business, he’d be perfect for Slot’s fluent and slick system.

3 CB – Ibrahima Konate

Ibrahima Konate warming up for Liverpool

Ah, sweet uncertainty.

It’s actually no laughing matter. Real Madrid, bane of Liverpool’s life, reportedly want Ibrahima Konate, and he’s out of a deal in just over one year.

The hulking centre-half has been immense this season, maybe as good as his counterpart beside him. Several months ago, Fabrizio Romano confirmed talks have been long underway and a positive outcome is expected for the Anfield side. So we shall cling to that hope for dear life.

4 CB – Virgil van Dijk

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk

More uncertainty.

Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool’s supreme defender and matchless leader, is also nearing the end of the line. However, he wants to stay; Slot wants him to stay; the fans want him to stay; the squad want him to stay.

Surely we will all be granted our wish. Van Dijk might be approaching his mid-thirties but he’s been extraordinary this season, and the ramifications of losing him would be keenly felt indeed.

5 LB – Milos Kerkez

Milos Kerkez for Bournemouth

This is big. Andy Robertson has been a stalwart for Liverpool, but he’s flagging at 31, ran into the dirt across so many tireless years. Milos Kerkez is the perfect replacement.

The i Paper have confirmed Liverpool have made contact and are honing in on the 21-year-old, who is available for around £40m and has been described as “a revelation at Bournemouth” by Sky Sports’ Jamie Carragher.

6 DM – Ryan Gravenberch

Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch

Ryan Gravenberch isn’t going anywhere. However, there’s no doubt he’s been overused this season and is currently beset by fatigue after playing so many minutes.

Liverpool would do well to sign another midfielder this summer, but it would take some player to dislodge the Dutchman from his starting berth.

7 CM – Alexis Mac Allister

Last year, Argentina international Alexis Mac Allister admitted he would love to play in Spain one day, for Real Madrid or Barcelona.

Just hold your horses, ay Mac. Liverpool hit the jackpot when bringing Brighton’s rising talent to Anfield for just £35m in 2023. He steered the club toward resurgence last year and has been a quiet leader and influence in the centre this season, as Slot’s side head toward the Premier League title.

8 AM – Dominik Szoboszlai

Dominik Szoboszlai celebrates for Liverpool

Dominik Szobozlai: Liverpool’s veritable life-blood.

The Hungarian has really come into his own over these past few months, with a gas tank to marvel at and an all-encompassing game that compelled Jurgen Klopp to pay £60m for his services back in 2023.

He’s not going anywhere.

9 RW – Mohamed Salah

Mohamed Salah warming up for Liverpool

Whether Mohamed Salah stays or goes depends on the push-and-pull at the negotiating table. At £350k per week, he’s the highest earner in Liverpool’s history.

Richard Hughes certainly has his work cut out, but we reckon the sporting director will placate the masses by engineering an extension.

10 LW – Cody Gakpo

Cody Gakpo celebrates for Liverpool

Luis Diaz is about to enter the penultimate year of his contract and is among the players Liverpool may cash in on this summer, but Cody Gakpo’s going nowhere.

The Netherlands forward sits second in Liverpool’s scoring charts with 16 goals, without question Slot’s standout forward with Salah notwithstanding.

An unbeaten century stand from Beau Webster and Jake Doran has given Tasmania control of their Sheffield Shield match against New South Wales in Hobart.Webster and Doran were unbeaten on 68 apiece at stumps on day one after putting on 131 for the fifth wicket to wrest the momentum away from NSW on a hectic first day that featured 14 wickets.Tasmania, who are second on the Shield ladder, were 179 for 4 at stumps in reply to NSW’s 181 after the home side won the toss in overcast conditions at Bellerive Oval. The home side had slumped to 48 for 4 before Webster and Doran first blunted the visitors’ counterpunch and then put Tasmania in a solid position. It is Webster’s sixth Shield half-century this summer and he has the third-highest runs total in the competition, with 453 from five matches at an average of 47.68.He also took two wickets as NSW never quite recovered from their disastrous start. After Ryan Hackney was dismissed in the first over of the game, a poorly judged third run cost No.3 Blake Macdonald his wicket thanks to slick fielding from Brad Hope and Jordan Silk.Gabe Bell then dismissed opener Daniel Hughes to leave NSW in tatters at 9 for 3. Matthew Gilkes scored 30, while Moises Henriques reached 50 and Ollie Davies top-scored with 67 from 65 balls as the NSW middle order stemmed the early bleeding. But when Webster caught Davies to give Lawrence Neil-Smith his third wicket, NSW were 165 for 8. Bell snared 4 for 29 and Neil-Smith took 3 for 57, with the NSW innings done in just 42 overs.Jackson Bird dismissed the Tasmanian openers cheaply and Jack Nisbet made the crucial breakthrough, producing an unplayable delivery to bowl in-form No.3 Charlie Wakim for 27.That left Tasmanian four down and on the brink before Webster and Doran ensured day one belonged to the home side.
